Predictions
Seeing how spring training has finally begun, I thought it would be good idea to
post my predictions as to who will make the final 25-man roster. So, without
futher ado, here I go:
Starting Pitchers:
1. Ben Sheets (R)
2. Glendon Rusch (L)
3. Todd Ritchie (R)
4. Nick Neugebauer (R)
5. Mike Matthews (L)
I feel that the Brewers should opt for two lefties this year since they seem to
have a plethora of lefties on the squad. No, Ruben Quevedo will not make the
squad, but I think the Brewers will send him to the minors and he will be one of
the first call-ups if they need another pitcher.
Relief Pitchers:
1. Valerio De Los Santos (L)
2. Wayne Franklin (L)
3. Jayson Durocher (R)
4. Dave Mlicki (R)
5. Luis Vizcaino (R)
6. Brooks Kieschnick (R)
7. Mike DeJean -- closer (R)
I've heard rumors that they may choose to take 12 pitchers this year, which is
unheard of in the National League. I think they should do this, especially if
Brooks Kieschnick proves capable of handling the job of being a relief pitcher
and a pinch-hitter.
Starting Lineup
1. Alex Sanchez - CF
2. Eric Young - 2B
3. Geoff Jenkins - LF
4. Richie Sexson - 1B
5. Jeffrey Hammonds - RF
6. Wes Helms - 3B
7. Javier Valentin - C
8. Royce Clayton - SS
9. pitcher
I think this could be the best lineup they can put together, at least right now.
I like Javier Valentin at catcher both because he's young and because the Twins
lost hope in him. Then again, Eddie Perez and Robert Machado are also strong
candidates for this job, but I feel the Brewers should start Valentin because
he's young enough to have a good year and be close to injury-free.
Bench
1. Enrique Cruz - IF
2. Robert Machado - C
3. Keith Ginter - IF
4. Brady Clark - OF
5. Scott Podsednik/John Vander Wal - OF
Cruz needs to be on the roster or else we lose him to the Mets. The Brewers
should be fine with keeping him there, especially if Brooks Kieschnick can pitch
and hit. I chose Machado because he was with the Brewers last year and they
have Eddie Perez signed to a minor league deal; thus, they can afford to send
Perez to the minors. The fifth outfield spot will be a tough call because both
Podsednik and Vander Wal are lefties. Thus, this spot will truly be based upon
who performs better in spring training (I'm sure other ones are too, but this
one will go down to the wire).
