Andriy Shevchenko has thanked the Milan fans for “a fantastic welcome that really moved me.”
The Ukrainian admitted he was afraid some would jeer his return two years after demanding a £30m move to Chelsea and that he would have to win back their faith.
“I really must thank the supporters for the fantastic welcome. It really moved me and I wish to thank them from the bottom of my heart,” said the striker.
He was hoping for a better ‘debut’ than a 2-1 home defeat to newly promoted Bologna, although he had a great chance on Ronaldinho’s assist.
“I honestly did not expect this type of match. Milan created so many chances and played well. We had the opportunities to go in front.
“We will do better in the next round and I’ll score another time, as Francesco Antonioli did very well to deny me today.”
President Silvio Berlusconi was in the stands at San Siro for the unveiling of his new Galacticos squad and remained impressed despite the result.
“The President was happy with the type of football we played and said it can happen to lose a game,” revealed Shevchenko.
“Now we have to work hard to create the right balance. I’m sorry, but next time will be better.”
