Probably the only thing any of the Cubs players were thinking about
was "let's win this game." But I have to admit it was SWEET!!!
Clemens is denied, again...that fat tub of guts. That's what he gets
for beaning Piazza. $*%@!# him. Let him take his act back to Yankee
stadium.

He certainly is.

And the irony of this is even more delicious given the fact that
Mike and Eric are good friends.

Clemens must be pretty frustrated.

E.K. is a total Prince, and I am glad to see that he is doing well in
Chicago.

Eric and Mike are the best looking guys in all of MLB.

I came in to see what was going on with Piazza and was happy to see
you all talking about the Cubs.

As a Cubs fan, I'm very happy to have denied Roger his 300th win.
Certainly a weird set of events got Eric into the game. Thankfully,
Hee Sop Choi our first baseman is going to be okay.

It's good to see by some of the other messages that Piazza will get
to play again this season. He's so close to the Fisk's Home Run
record that I'd really like to see him get it before they move him to
another position.

Have a great night everyone!

GO CUBS! (and Mets too!)

Yes.

And who knows? Perhaps a couple of years from now there will
be an "Official Tom Piazza Club" on Yahoo. I'll join.

Years ago I saw a set of pictures of Mike with his brothers. Tom
was still only a teenager, but he was cute and did share a
resemblance to Mike. In fact, all of Mike's brothers seemed
goodlooking, with Mike, of course, looking his usual gorgeous
self.

At any rate, Tom certainly has a great resource for advice in Mike.

That ought to help.

                   Dodgers draft another Piazza
Mike's younger brother taken in the 26th round
                         By Ken Gurnick / MLB.com

A young Tommy Piazza shakes hands with his

                   . Dodgers draft picks
LOS ANGELES -- Dodgers get Piazza?

No, it's not who you think.

Thomas Piazza, Mike's 21-year-old brother, was drafted by the
Dodgers Wednesday in the 26th round of the First-Year Player Draft, 15 years
after the club chose Mike with a 62nd-round pick at the urging of family friend
and then-manager Tom Lasorda and over the objections of just about everybody in
the scouting department.

The younger Piazza, also a catcher, was drafted out of Palm
Beach Atlantic College. He's 6-0, 200 pounds and, unlike his Hall-of-Fame
candidate brother, he bats left-handed.

"The last time Tommy (Lasorda) recommended his godson and we
drafted the kid, a lot of people were skeptical, but it worked out pretty well,"
said scouting director Logan White. "So, we're taking a flyer this time.

"Actually, he can swing the bat. He's a line drive hitter with
some power. We need some catching and we'll run him out there and see what
happens. I'm not saying the kid is like his brother. That wouldn't be fair. But
he has strength and he can hit and those kind with drive and desire and
bloodlines tend to find a way to get there."

White said the younger Piazza told the club he wants to sign
and play professionally.

"He has more raw ability than most who went at that time,
whether people believe that," said White. "He's like a lot of college seniors.
He knows how to play and we'll see if he can make the most of it. Nobody is
saying he's going to be a superstar like his brother, but he's not going out
there and embarrass himself either."

White said he expected more reaction to the pick than
26th-rounders generally stir, but he said there was no hidden agenda, like
enticing another Piazza to return someday to Southern California to play with
his brother.

"I hadn't thought about that," White said. "I don't think so.
I knew I'd get questioned on it. It has a lot to do with Tommy knowing the
family and the kid and giving him an opportunity. It worked once, maybe it will
again."

                   Dodgers conclude 2003 draft
LA takes Mike Piazza's brother in 26th round
                         By Ken Gurnick / MLB.com

The Dodgers' first-round draft pick, Chad
Billingsley, is placed on the board. (Mark Langill/Dodgers)

                   . Dodgers draft picks
LOS ANGELES -- For the seven-figure bonus to which he will
soon agree, the Dodgers are betting that first-round pick Chad Billingsley will
someday be an impact player.

Until then, the player who had the greatest impact on this
year's Dodger First-Year Player Draft is named Piazza.

Catcher Thomas Piazza, the 21-year-old brother of former
Dodger Mike, was drafted in the 26th round Wednesday out of Palm Beach Atlantic
College. This comes 15 years after the club chose Mike with a 62nd-round pick at
the urging of family friend and then-manager Tom Lasorda and over the objections
of just about everybody in the scouting department.

The younger Piazza is 6-0, 200 pounds and, unlike his
Hall-of-Fame candidate brother, he bats left-handed. He was the most notable
name among the 30 chosen by the Dodgers on Wednesday as the draft concluded.

Scouting director Logan White, who chose high school players
with his first eight picks Tuesday, wound up with 35 high school picks out of 50
total. Nine of the first 14 picks were pitchers, but 14 of the final 15 taken
Wednesday were position players. Of the 20 pitchers taken, 11 are righties, nine
are lefties.

Although the organization would appear short on third basemen,
the Dodgers drafted only one, Matthew Votaw of Brea Olinda (Calif.) High School,
in the 41st round.

The tallest draftee is Michael Ludwig, a 6-6 first baseman
from St. Olaf College. The shortest is center fielder Antonio Anderson of Greene
County (Miss.) High School, listed by the Dodgers at 5-9, but measured by Major
League Baseball at 5-6 and only 145 pounds.

                         Chad Billingsley

                         School:
                         Defiance Senior HS
                         Position: RHP B/T: R/R
                         H: 6-2 W: 195
                         Born: 07-29-84 Class: HS

                         Scouting report:
Well developed, muscular body. Similar to Kevin Appier.
Fastball 91-93, occasionally 94, tailing, running life. 2-seam fastball,
curveball, slider. Change shows potential. Throws 4 pitches. Signed with South
Carolina.

                         Customize a Chad Billingsley jersey

                   In the right-handed Billingsley and second-round left-hander
Chuck Tiffany, the Dodgers believe they nabbed a pair of first-round caliber
high school pitching prospects. Although White stated before the draft he hoped
to land an impact hitter, he loaded up early on pitching for the second
consecutive year. White likes his pitchers tall. The average height of the 20 he
took this week is 6-2.

"I'm really excited and pleased that we were able to get the
kinds of players that, in three to five years, have a chance to be impact
players for the Los Angeles Dodgers," said White, concluding his second draft at
the helm. "We got power arms at the top and a couple guys high with a chance to
be good hitters."

Those hitters are outfielders Xavier Paul from Slidell (La.)
High School and Matthew Kemp from Midwest City (Okla.) High School, taken in the
fourth and sixth round, respectively.

White said he was also optimistic about the chances of
seventh-round pick Dequam Wright, a 5-10, 150-pound left-handed pitcher from
Goshen (Ala.) High School, and 11th-round pick Anthony Harper, a catcher from
Oak Creek (Wis.) High School with a live bat.

"And today we took a lot of draft-and-follow prospects," White
said. "We hope next year we can hit on one or two of those."

White said one of the more intriguing picks is 13th-round
selection Derik Olvey from Pelham (Ala.) High School, a right-handed pitcher who
committed to Notre Dame.

"A lot of people believe he's going to college and that might
be," said White. "He's got a 4.2 GPA and an SAT way up there. He may end up in
school. But we'll make a run and try to sign him. He was projected as a second
or third rounder. If we don't sign a fourth or fifth rounder, we might take that
money and get him."

Another curious player is Anderson, the small center fielder,
compared by White to Juan Pierre of the Florida Marlins. White said he runs the
60-yard dash in 6.2.

White remains optimistic he will be able to sign Billingsley
relatively quickly. He will visit with the family on Monday. Last year's 24th
pick received a $1.4 million bonus, and Billingsley figures to be in that
ballpark.

"We get along well with the family," said White. "Hopefully we
can get it done next week."

It only gets better...

The Mets took, in the 12th round, Tony Piazza, a catcher out of SW
Missouri State. This time, no relation.

If Tommy's anything like Mike, he should do just fine!

LOS ANGELES -- Dodgers get Piazza?

No, it's not who you think.

Thomas Piazza, Mike's 21-year-old brother, was drafted by the
Dodgers Wednesday in the 26th round of the First-Year Player
Draft, 15 years after the club chose Mike with a 62nd-round pick
at the urging of family friend and then-manager Tom Lasorda
and over the objections of just about everybody in the scouting
department.

The younger Piazza, also a catcher, was drafted out of Palm
Beach Atlantic College. He's 6-0, 200 pounds and, unlike his
Hall-of-Fame candidate brother, he bats left-handed.

"The last time Tommy (Lasorda) recommended his godson and
we drafted the kid, a lot of people were skeptical, but it worked
out pretty well," said scouting director Logan White. "So, we're
taking a flyer this time.

"Actually, he can swing the bat. He's a line drive hitter with some
power. We need some catching and we'll run him out there and
see what happens. I'm not saying the kid is like his brother. That
wouldn't be fair. But he has strength and he can hit and those
kind with drive and desire and bloodlines tend to find a way to
get there."

White said the younger Piazza told the club he wants to sign and
play professionally.

"He has more raw ability than most who went at that time,
whether people believe that," said White. "He's like a lot of
college seniors. He knows how to play and we'll see if he can
make the most of it. Nobody is saying he's going to be a
superstar like his brother, but he's not going out there and
embarrass himself either."

White said he expected more reaction to the pick than 26th-
rounders generally stir, but he said there was no hidden
agenda, like enticing another Piazza to return someday to
Southern California to play with his brother.

"I hadn't thought about that," White said. "I don't think so. I knew
I'd get questioned on it. It has a lot to do with Tommy knowing
the family and the kid and giving him an opportunity. It worked
once, maybe it will again.

Yes, and just to add something else - I read he is not allowed to
travel with the team.

I'll be very interested to hear if he's there. I just got back from
two weeks vacation and with no internet connection it has been the
pits to get news on Mike. I finally called my bro-in-law, who is a
baseball fan too, and begged him to check the Injury report on ESPN,
but it was not too informative.

I did a quick check on the Net this AM. I've heard 6-8 weeks, I've
heard 8-12 weeks. What are the New York papers saying? One report I
read said grade 3 tear - the worst. Concise updates for an anxious CA
fan would be appreciated!
