Ten Commandments of Geocaching
By mozartman1
To many people, Geocaching is almost a religious experience. For those of us
who need them, here are the Ten Commandments of Geocaching.
I. Thou shalt have no other hobbies before geocaching.
II. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven avatar.
III. Thou shalt not take the name of Dave Ulmer in vain.
IV. Remember the caching day, to keep it holy.
V. Honour thy coordinates and thy waypoints.
VI. Thou shalt not kill the joy of other geocachers.
VII. Thou shalt not commit geocide.
VIII. Thou shalt not steal a cache.

IX. Thou shalt not bear false witness in thy neighbour's cache logs.
X. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's GPSr.
Happy Caching!

Yes, this is true.

I first became aware of the problem because I got this spam mail just from
"Sharron" and thought it was Olepaint emailing me. The email opened with

"Hi sweetie!"

I thought "Aw, how nice!" Then it quickly led into "Are you looking for some
hot action?" and I began to doubt it was from Olepaint :) Though I was
amused by the whole thing so I went to send her a PM and *SHREEEK* the site
was not up. Then it came up, but was gone. Then something changed, but it
was still gone. Now it's up and I can cancel "Nervous breakdown" from my
schedule today.

See you all this weekend!!!

There was some kind of glitch but it is up and running again as of early this morning. Trippy varified that there was a problem on the forums at Geocaching.com yesterday but didn't know anything further at that time. Gary was able to get into it sometime early this morning and I was able to access it a few minutes agao also. So apparently all is well once again in MiGo web land.

Hoooo Ray!! I just brought my computer home from the hospital tonight. She is rested and ready! Not having her here was a stressfull situation, but as a family we are strong! Betsie and I are exploring the world again, and she is cooperating very nicely. Her operating system needed to be reinstalled, (a major operation involving hours of labors), and now she is a new woman. Betsie has pledged her undying love and support of my cyberland activities, and promised that she won't go astray again. For now, I believe her. I still need to introduce many new-to-her pieces of hardware and software. The reintroduction of some her previous personality will be slow and sure. But yea! She is happy to be home and in my care. Hey! You don't just give up on a loved one on account of an occassional breakdown. We pulled through, and she is still here, and going strong!

The link in the news post takes you to the geocaching.com boards.

That comment was made before clarification of the situation.

It's a long conversation, but round abouts here:

Rusty hits on the clarified areas.

Here is a link to the text of the letter we received:

Hope that clarifies things. I also made a note in the news on our main page
about this not affecting rec areas and state parks. Thanks for pointing that
out.

Rusty, Quantum Fishe, Mike Wunderlich, et al:

Thanks for setting me straight. I am now better educated that there
are differences between recreation areas, game areas and so on. I'm
still a bit confused and I guarantee that I'm not the only one. For
example, the MiGO home page has this announcement:

>>> "As of April 16, 2003 the US Fish and Wildlife Service has
determined that geocaching is not a compatable use for areas they
provide funding for. In Michigan that includes all State Game Areas
and Wildlife Refuges. Because of this new ruling we are forced to ask
that all caches placed in those areas be archived and removed
immediately."

I made the mistake of thinking that since hunting is permitted in
recreation areas that it was the same as a game area. I then
followed the link to the discussion board where I read Sandrich's
post of April 17 in which he wrote:

>>> "The US Fish & Wildlife Dept has ruled that Geocaching is not
compatible with it's version of Wildlife Reclamation. Therefore, no
Geocaching is allowed on ANY of it's land, or any lands that it
funds! ... ...Therefore, Geocaching is now ILLEGAL on any DNR
managed land! So we have just lost in excess of 4 million acres of
land"

Now wait a minute! Aren't the recreation areas managed by the DNR?
And do we really have 4 million acres just in game areas?

Regardless of all that, I am still closing the geocache. The DNR
asks that we move our geocaches at least 300 ft, at least once a
year, AND after 14 months of unemployment, I've had to take a job in
another part of the state. It will be difficult for me to
responsibly manage this geocache from my new home.

I believe that Lyndon Park is an EXCELLENT location for a geocache,
and I hope that someone in the area sets up another cache there!

I'm not sure who still checks this forum but I will reply anyways.

Archiving your cache is your call, and its been out for a year which
is a good run. But I should set the record straight, the Pinckney &
Waterloo Rec areas are not part of the land the DNR has asked for
caches to be removed from. Their request ONLY applies to State Game
Areas. The state parks, forests, and rec areas each operate under
different management and sets of rules.

This is not an attempt to sway your opinion one way or the other, I
just wanted to give the facts.

Cache on,
Rusty...

Knowing this, why not keep the cache going, people!  No necessity in removing it if the land in question is not part of the removal request territories.  And remember, you can always apply for a permit to put it out if it has to be removed.

This is what I mean about people responding emotionally and not doing empirical research on a subject *before* making a decision.  And some people won't accept an answer "because somebody else (presumably an 'authority' figure of some type) stated that they couldn't do something and they choose to go with what the person says regardless of what's actually on the books.

Case in Point:  I've been an Amateur Radio Operator (Ham Operator) since 1991.  I used to live in the city of Gaylord, in Otsego County.  Well, there's a county ordinance that says that if a person wants to have a radio capable of receiving police band calls in their vehicle, that they have to have a special permit from the office of the Sheriff.  (I don't agree with this, I think that everyone has the *right* to listen to anything they want, regardless of it being in their vehicle or in their home; however, this is the ordinance, just thought I'd clarify my own opinion here).

Continuing, I ran across this guy who was a volunteer firefighter for one of the outlying township fire barns, and he was all up in the air about how he had this permit that allowed him to be able to have a two-way radio or scanner that could receive fire and police bands.

Well, I also know that the same ordinance (or maybe it's a state law now that I think about it, I'll look it up again, as it's been a while) also states that a person who possesses an Amateur Radio (Ham) license of Technician Class or above can have a scanner or radio that can receive the police bands.  This is primarily due to the fact that most Ham mobile units and handheld "walkie talkies" have wide-band receive from about 1MHz to 1.2GHz in some models; in short, they can receive all but the digitally-encoded trunking bands (primarily used in the 800 to 900MHz range) without any major problems.

An Amateur Radio license is a Federal license, so there is some protection from state laws overriding the Ham licensee.  Hence the <either state law or ordinance> being present.  Well, this guy was all the pride of his knowledge base ;).  He even went so far as to produce a xeroxed copy of the law from his pocket.  So I take this thing, and read down a bit.  Sure enough, there it was in black and white:  the aforementioned paragraph exempting hams from needing this Sheriff Dept. approval permit (again, something I think is a bit much like asking your parents to walk across the street after you've turned 18..sheesh...but I digress ;-^).

What he did after that just boggles my mind:  I pointed out the paragraph to him, produced my own ham license from my own wallet, and indicated my Technician Class status, thereby showing my exemption.  This guy wouldn't budge an inch from his opinion.  I then *read the statute **aloud** * to him, but it didn't make any difference.  There it was in black and white, with me enunciating clearly the words of the <ordinance/law> and he still stated that I, Myself, needed the permit from the Sheriff's Dept.

Hee hee hee.  Considering that a Michigan State Trooper is the Emergency Coordinator in Otsego County, I would think that if this were an issue, it'd have been brought up a long long time ago.  Well, some people just can't admit that they are in error--even when the proof is, literally, staring them in the face, and when someone is pointing it out to them, directly!

So for you who are considering removing the cache:  PLEASE GET THE FACTS BEFORE YOU DECIDE TO REMOVE IT, PLEASE!  Don't go around saying that you have to do such and such because you just heard it had to be that way.  Get the facts!  Now, if you want to remove it because you want to, that's your business; after all, it's your cache, not mine.  Still, if you're removing it *because you're scared,* perhpas some educational endeavor is needed on your part to remove all doubt.  No one's going to castigate you if it's on land it shouldn't be on--save for the likes of a high-security area, but caches should not be placed on or near those areas to begin with--the only thing that'd happen is it would be removed or you would be either asked or instructed to remove it by authorities.  Just comply with them and be polite.  It's not a hard thing to accomplish.

However, if it's not in the aforementioned State Game Area, don't worry about it.  It's probably okay.  Get your facts straight.  Don't act without KNOWING WHAT IS REAL AND WHAT IS MERELY *PERCEIVED TO BE REAL*.

Get outside.  Go Geocaching!

Warm regards,
Firefishe/N8PZT

Archiving your cache is your call, and its been out for a year which
is a good run.  But I should set the record straight, the Pinckney &
Waterloo Rec areas are not part of the land the DNR has asked for
caches to be removed from.  Their request ONLY applies to State Game
Areas.  The state parks, forests, and rec areas each operate under
different management and sets of rules.

This is not an attempt to sway your opinion one way or the other, I
just wanted to give the facts.

Cache on,

Hi Mike,

All you have to do is to click on the send or submit button at the bottom
of the form. Your name will be added to the list of folks who oppose the
acceptance of Canada's trash. The way I see it is they have millions of
acres up there, they can take care of their own garbage. Why should we
continue to allow then to trash our state.

Dear Ken,

As someone who I know cares deeply about Michigan's environment, I
wanted
to keep you updated on my efforts to stop the flood of Canadian trash
coming into Michigan.

In January, Toronto decided to stop taking responsibility for its
garbage,
and now sends all of its trash - over 1.1 million tons each year - to
landfills in Michigan. More than 160 trash trucks from Canada pass
through
our borders at the Blue Water Bridge and the Ambassador Bridge every
day.
Now, Toronto is considering a proposal to ship 55,000 tons of human
sewage
waste into Michigan.

Besides the obvious environmental concerns, these trucks pose a
serious
homeland security threat. By their very nature, trucks filled with
garbage
are difficult to carefully inspect. The Canadian waste also hampers
the
effectiveness of Michigan's state and local recycling efforts, since
Ontario does not have a bottle law requiring recycling. Earlier this
year,
a Canadian garbage truck driver was arrested for smuggling illegal
drugs
across the border in his truck. Additionally, Canadian trash trucks
carrying radioactive materials have been turned back at the U.S.
border no
fewer than five times.

The U.S. Government can stop the flow of Canadian trash right NOW, by
enforcing an existing treaty with Canada that requires the Canadian
government to seek approval from the Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA)
before any shipments can be sent across the border.

I urge you to join me and call on the EPA Administrator to immediately
enforce this treaty and stop the flood of Canadian trash right now. I
have set up an online petition on my website

http://stabenow.senate.gov/stoptrash

Please take a moment to sign up
and ask the administration to stop Toronto from dumping its trash on
Michigan.

Sincerely,
Debbie Stabenow
United States Senator

I’ve rec’d a message from a Michigan teacher on the Great Plains Geocaching site for assistance in using geocaching to teach Science. Anyone know any teachers in Michigan that might be able to help on this issue or perhaps any geocachers that might have some science background?

I’ll research the geocaching site a bit, too, but thought I’d post here first.  Let me know.

I miss the regular emails on the list myself. It seems if something comes in my mailbox I read it, if I have to go find it somewhere, or log on a website to be able to access it, I tend to skip it. Too bad there isn't some way to have postings made to the forum be available in an email format.

On a side note, I wish more portions of the MiGo website were available without having to log on as a member. I have applied for membership twice and I still have problems with a password login. Admittedly, had I dogged at it with more persistence I may have been able to eventually get everything straight, but I guess the difficulty discouraged me. LOL must be the pregnancy hormones or something.
