Newtown 3 Barry Town 0
Manager Roger Preece's call for a positive response did the trick as
Newtown got back to winning ways with an ultimately comfortable 3-0
success over the basement strugglers Barry Town at Latham Park
In the wake of the previous week's disappointing Welsh Cup exit at
Welshpool, striker Peter Smith ensured a swift riposte by crashing
home an angled 11th minute opener into the top corner.
Yet Barry, despite having just one point this term, did briefly
threaten before half time with Joshua Perry forcing a couple of
smart saves from former Shrewsbury Town keeper Paul Edwards, who
turned one effort over the bar and another past the post.
Newtown, however, took charge after the break as they carved several
good opportunities only to see Smith and Danny Barton fail to
capitalise with just keeper Lee Ruddall to beat.
But the Mid Wales men finally doubled their lead on 78 minutes when
Justin Wickham headed home a right wing cross from new signing
Adrian Moody, a recent capture from Rhyl.
And they sealed victory in the last minute as Martin Giles found
Wickham who crossed invitingly from the right for Barton to steer
into the net.
