New signing Chris Venables proved an instant hit as Caersws twice
hit back to salvage a point with a 2-2 draw at Cwmbran Town.
The former Shrewsbury Town youngster had a hand in his side's first
goal before ensuring a point with a superb 25-yard effort in the
second half.
The Bluebirds would have been relatively happy with the point after
some early blows.
They lost defender Hugh Clarke (hamstring) and forward Andy Marfell
(migraine) in the first half.
In front of a sparse crowd, Brian Coyne's Cwmbran had taken the lead
out of the blue with an eighth minute strike from Richard Hurlin.
But 18-year-old midfielder Venables proved his worth for his home
club four minutes later when flicking the ball on from Kevin Scott
to Graham Evans who volleyed in from 10 yards.
Caersws had chances to increase the lead as they pushed forward with
Jamie Davies, Evans, Andy Davies and Graham Jones all going close.
The Gwent men came more into the game after the break with former
Newtown player Jamie Edwards shooting over while ex-Leeds man Rhodri
Jones headed wide with the goal at his mercy.
But just when the Bluebirds appeared to be getting on top, they were
caught against the run of play with Jason Welsh converting a 74th
minute cross following a break upfield.
The Mid Wales men, however, were back on terms four minutes later as
debutant Venables crashed home a rasping 25-yard strike after
latching onto a punched clearance from keeper Marty Ellacott.
