Re: awards/youth

At the Chigger Run summer race, my son was the only 50 racer to show up, we
didn't figure this out till after the 65's had started so Scott gave him the
full race time by himself. Scott even ran sweep behind my son. I asked my son if
he still wanted to ride even though he was the only one and there was no doubt
in his mind that he came to ride. As an adult I didn't see the point of racing
by yourself but I could see what was important to Nathan. He didn't care about
bragging rights or the hillbilly plaque that he got. It's just something that he
loves to do. Nathan actually won 2 races this past winter and I have kicked
myself a thousand times for only registering his older brother for the points, I
didn't think Nathan was ready to actually compete. Nathan doesn't care about
that, again he just wants to ride his best like his older brother and he likes
his Dad(me) to tell him he did good when it is all over. He's got several
trophies and I'm the only one who seems to care about them at this point.
Participation medals are of no value to either of my sons by the way.
I think putting Scott in this position is unfair to him. There is no win for
him, only a request to break the rules. I also believe this would be more for
the adults conscience than the kids who would be affected. We expect him to
enforce the rules on race day that were established before the series began.
Changing rules has never been a good idea in my experience. Don't think he
doesn't care about the kids because it shows at every race, if you've been there
you know this. Out of respect for a good man with a tough job, I didn't try to
get him to enter Nathan into the points after the cutoff even though I wanted to
very much. Nathan just says, "I'll get'em next year!"
My 2 cents
Jay McCoy
