Chicago Bicycle Safety Law Campaign
Wed 8/16/2006
The 14th Police District and the Chicago Department of
Transportation are launching a campaign to encourage and enforce compliance
with bicycle safety laws. City officials are reminding bicyclists that it is
not only dangerous to ride a bicycle after dark without a headlamp, it is
illegal and may result in a warning or fine from Police.
Beginning at dusk Wednesday, Aug. 16, Chicago’s
14th District officers and Mayor Daley’s Bicycling Ambassadors will
patrol the Wicker
Park neighborhood by
bike, stopping cyclists riding without headlamps. Their strategy combines
outreach and law enforcement in the interest of safe cycling.
“The goal of this program is not to ticket cyclists,
but to promote their safety when riding after dark,” said 14th District
Commander Salvador Avila.
The emphasis on bike safety comes with the increasing
popularity of bicycling for transportation and recreation in Chicago. The development of an enforcement
program targeting particularly dangerous bicycling is one of the strategies of
the City of Chicago’s
recently unveiled Bike 2015 Plan.
General information about Chicago’s
bicycling ordinances can be found on the CDOT Bicycle Program website, www.chicagobikes.org and Chicago’s Bike 2015
Plan can be viewed or downloaded at www.bike2015plan.org
