Just received the CBF snail mail news. The UIC CCC scavenger hunt
is listed for 14 Oct., but, the time given is 6:00 PM. Becki's posting
said 7:00 PM.

Just wondering, which is correct ?

I was soooo looking forward to a night rain ride but as of 2:30pm, I've just accepted an evacuee until Tuesday.
I really don't think he's gonna wanna join us in the rain (yes, as I'm typing this, its pouring now)

It is definitely not just a student function (I am the person who claims to be the CCC vice president). Everybody is welcome. Students may get a few extra points, but here is no need to have a student on a team.

Gareth, we are reducing the number of points that can be earned for take-out menus this year - just for you :)

The UIC CircleCycleClub scavenger hunt is a lot of fun. I do it every year and
I've never yet been a UIC student. Maybe it is different this year but I'd be
surprised. I think there may or may not be a rule that every team must have
UIC students. The teams I scavengerhunted with always had UIC students
and we always got 1st or 2nd! Many teams had a mix of UIC students and civilians.

I've been living and working in Central Bangkok for a few weeks now,
and I finally went out for a midnight ride.  Well, more like 2 a.m.

It was great in some ways (much less smog / traffic), but less than
expected in others (still lots of people / vehicles out, many drunken
drivers).

I cut the ride short, as I got wigged out after seeing some drunken
swerving cars and tuk-tuks.  I'm thinking that 5:15 or so might be
perfect - the drunks should already be home, and the morning people
will not yet be out in force.

While last night's ride was amazing - seeing a different side of the
city - it didn't have that deserted feeling you can get while riding
in Chicago at 4:15 a.m. on a weekday.

The daytime traffic is insane, and I'll try to get a ride report out
about biking all night.

Subject: [bikesonmetra] METRA Screwed Me, Well, not really

By now you've probably all heard about the METRA SURPRISE SUNDAY
BICYCLE BLACKOUT.

The reasons given were the Celtic Fest (at Grant Park) and World
Music Fest. Well, Celtic Fest ain't no Taste of Chicago, and the World
Music Fest was at scattered sites throughout the city.

Well, it didn't affect me as much as it did others. I've read on the
CCM list about people who took Sat/Sun overnight trips depending on
METRA to get them back to Chicago. Oops. The METRA loophole, 'it's our
train and we get to say who plays with it'.

Anyhow, my situation was actually okay. I was headed out northwest,
as was another cyclist, he going to Cary, me figuring on Harvard and
some riding in the farmland between there and Rockford. The conductor
came by about a half hour later to tell us that he had just been
informed it was a NO BIKE day. Since we were already on, it was okay,
but, we would not be able to take METRA back.

By the time I got to Woodstock, (we were half a dozen strong), no
not really, I detrained. Hit the town festival, had a late breakfast
and Zig Zagged back to Chicago. Found a little antique shop town
called Ridgefield between Woodstock (no slouch in the antique shop
market itself) and Crystal Lake.

Picked up the Fox River Trail (McHenry Prairie Trail) in CL and
headed south. Hitting washrooms and watering holes. (Penny Road Pub,
decent biker bar, as in Harley, but welcoming to all. At least when I
was there.)

Made the mistake of visiting friends in South Barrington, so made a
late nite run, (21:15 to 23:30), with lights blazing to get home. Full
moon, somewhat ethereal.

just in case some of you didn't get this (arn't on the cm list), it sounds
pretty awesome...

1st annual Wicker Park Pedal Pushers Brigade Parade
                                presented by AAA Studios

On Saturday September 10th, AAA Studios presents the 1st Annual Wicker Park
Pedal Pushers Brigade Parade. This event allows anyone to partake in a
"RIDE
ANYTHING THAT IS RIDABLE" parade, with the one exception being no motorized
vehicles. Trick out your unicycle, tricycle, bike, big wheel, or create
your own contraption. Come in costume, paint, drag, plain clothes, or your
favorite ensemble. If creativity isn't your forte, no worries, pull into
our
tented garage and get overhauled by local artists, body painters and bike
mechanics.

This event is an opportunity to raise funds for research, information
programs, and advocacy efforts that support people with diabetes in our
community. Unlike most fundraising events here in Chicago, we are
providing
a platform and a unique opportunity for artists, performers, musicians and
the like to fully express their creative talents, network, promote
environmentally conscious transportation, and to get a little bit weird for
a good cause! Our efforts will directly benefit over 700,000 thousand
diabetics in Illinois, with nearly 400,000 of them in Chicago alone. We are
asking for a donation of only $10 to participate, with all proceeds
going to
the nonprofit American Diabetes Association. The ADA is dedicated to
prevent
and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by
diabetes.
Registration begins at 5:00pm in Wicker Park (Damen & Schiller, just south
of North/Milwaukee/Damen intersection).

The procession will begin in the park with ringmaster Anthony Mosley
(Collaboraction) and two performance art groups, Environmental Encroachment
and Mucca Pazza, leading the helm through the streets of Wicker Park.
We'll
take to the streets at approximately 7:00pm with the parade ending at a
post
parade block party at the AAA Space (Milwaukee & Wabansia, 2 blocks
north of
6 corners on Milwaukee).

If you can’t participate in the parade head directly over to AAA Studios,
where over 20 artists, performers, and musicians will participate in the
Around the Coyote Arts Festival. Feel free to check out the Mud Queens, an
all female charity fund raising/mud wrestling team. The Mud Queens will
wrestle to raise funds for the Young Women's Improvement Project. The
"mudness" begins at 7:00pm in the AAA parking lot, so throw down a $10
donation and watch these ladies go at it!

AAA Space will continue the festivities with drinks and live music by
Bible
of the Devil, Imperial Battlesnake, and Venue. Show your parade bracelet
and
get in for FREE, or a suggested $10 donation. Beverages provided by Goose
Island. So grab your “ride”, gear up and come on out for this fundraising
fiesta!
