Hate to clutter this list, but seems worth sharing. I "crashed" the LATE
ride yesterday also (on skates), but couldn't join y'all at Dark Bar. I
felt it was too far away, since I live up near Foster and the lake.
Instead I skated to Belmont for drinks, then back on the path to meet the
ride at Foster after 2am. Saw the mass arrive from its head, with a Ronald
McDonald himself actually riding early on.
I hung out with volunteers at Foster a while watching with wonderment, and
helped a little corking Foster's LSD exit as drivers were drunk and
bewildered. Kept looking for marauders or marauder flags, but didn't spot
'em. One of the volunteers offered me a breakfast voucher if I thought I
could make it to Buckingham Fountain, and I went for it. It was a workout,
skating fast about 7.5 miles against a headwind; required hard strokes and
conscious breathing. People with readouts said I was doing 9-12mph. Really
glad for the challenge, and glad I was wearing a foreheadlight. Many bikes
were faster, but even 8+mph would've been pack-appropriate, at least on that
final lakefront stretch.
Got to the fountain, had a nice enough McD event breakfast
(juice, apple, cookies, bagel), and walked around for more than an hour
surprised to see absolutely nobody I knew the slightest bit, even as
thousands of cyclists continued to return. Ultimately I didn't wait for
sunrise though it would've been soon, and headed back by train with tons of
cyclists.
