BEREA, Ohio - With the overhaul of the Cleveland Browns behind him,
general manager Phil Savage has a specific list of needs to address in
his second offseason with the team.
And he's got the money and draft picks to do it.
Speaking a day before the NFL combine, Savage said the Browns are in
much better shape than they were a year ago when he and coach Romeo
Crennel arrived in Cleveland.
"I feel like we survived '05 and we're going to be able to do some
things in '06 to make us better," Savage said Tuesday. "We feel like
we can now at least get out there and swim a little bit where a year
ago we felt like we inherited a situation where we might be drowning."
Savage expects to be active when the free agent signing period opens
March 3. Cleveland has about $25 million to spend and Savage indicated
that pass rushers are a top priority for the Browns, who ranked last
in sacks last season. A veteran wide receiver is another need.
"We're going to be fairly aggressive right off the top if certain
players get to the market," Savage said.
As for the NFL draft, Savage may break with Browns tradition by taking
an offensive linemen on the first day of the draft to add youth to
their veteran line. The Browns have drafted only two offensive lineman
in the first three rounds since returning to the league in 1999.
"It's an area that has to be addressed with younger players," Savage
said. "I would love for us to draft somebody of significance this year
for the offensive line."
BROWNS TERMINATE THE CONTRACT OF LB KENARD LANG
The Cleveland Browns have terminated the contract of LB Kenard Lang,
the club announced today. Lang played four seasons with the Browns
(2002-05) and appeared in 62 games, including 49 starts at defensive
end and linebacker.
"We felt in talking with Kenard and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, that
this was the best move to make for him as well as the Browns," said
Browns Senior Vice President and General Manager, Phil Savage.
"Kenard has been the consummate professional as a member of the
Cleveland Browns the last four years and we wish him success as he
continues his career in the NFL."
In his four seasons in Cleveland, Lang totaled 245 tackles, 166 solo
tackles, 22.5 sacks for 152.5 yards, two interceptions, nine PBU, five
forced fumbles and one recovered fumble. His best season came in 2003
with a career-high 79 tackles and eight sacks.
"I enjoyed playing for the Cleveland Browns and for the fans
throughout Northeast Ohio and I also enjoyed helping the people in the
community during my time in Cleveland," said Lang. "Most of all, I
want to thank Randy Lerner, Romeo Crennel, Phil Savage and everyone in
the Cleveland Browns organization."

All that are intersted in attending The Kats Game on March 25th
(Saturday 7pm) vs San Jose Sabercats.
We need at least 15 people to commit to this to get the special
pricing of $25 a ticket. The sections that are possible for this
price are; 108, 113, 118, 103. I will find out which section we would
get after I get a good count.
I need to have a final count / commitment by February 20th.
PLEASE email me or just respond to this posting so that everyone can
see where we are at.
Thanks and GO BROWNS
Frye said he was planning on spending part of the off-season in
Arizona training but decided to come back to Cleveland and spend the
time working with his teammates and coaches. He wants to add about 10
pounds to his frame to get up to 225 pounds to increase his durability.
He mentioned that he particularly wants to concentrate on working with
Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow, who are rehabbing from ACL injuries.
"Those are the guys who are going to be the playmakers out there next
year and it's very important for us to have good camaraderie and be on
the same page with each other."
Frye is confident the experience he received in his rookie season will
help him next year.
"Towards the end of the season, every week I played I felt more and
more comfortable," Frye said. After playing those games I understand
more of what it takes to win in this league. You have to get everybody
on the same page. Everybody has to be in the same boat.
"Everybody has to have confidence in themselves and I have that same
confidence that I can go out there and be the starting quarterback,"
he said. "I played pretty well in the last five games and I'm only
going to get better."

Ya they do, this Friday...but he resigned last year
http://chrisspielman.com/
(6.25.05) Chris's agent, Bret Adams, announced this evening that he
had resigned as head coach of the Columbus Destroyers.
It appears that Chris decided that, rather than comply with an order
from ownership to fire the team's defensive coordinator, he chose to
resign himself.

Could be interesting. I know nothing about Arena football. Isn't
Chris Spielman coaching the Columbus team? And do they play in
Nashville this year? Just a thought....
