Road vs. trail, etc.   Message List

I was planning on using my road bike for this, my first Michigander,
because it's really nice for the road and paved-trail segments of the
route (such as the Pere Marquette from Midland to Claire). However, I'd
also enjoy riding some of the scenic non-paved trails. So what I'm
thinking of doing, since I have a spare set of wheels lying around, is
to see if I can get a "cyclocross" type of tire that would make my bike
more suitable for some of the unpaved trails or dirt roads without
holding me back too much on the pavement. I've actually ridden the
unpaved Clinton River Trail on this bike with regular 700x25c road tires
without too much problem, so it seems like just a slightly wider tire
with some tread would make the bike decent on smooth trails.

Anyone else riding this type of setup? I know there are some limits due
to tire clearance issues, but I think I can find something that will work.
