She does not. I just finished reading Michelle's book, "Heart of a Champion,"
and only her and her sister Karen are skaters. The rest of the story you cite
is correct.

What do we know for certain about Sarah or Michelle's
schedule for next year?

News that Sarah is 'thinking about' a comeback don't
mean much, I'd say (I THINK about all kinds of
things), and there were comments on another site that
the reporter who wrote that has been wrong before.

I'm kinda concerned. Do you think Sarah will do fine. Since she
hasn't skated in almost a year, I feel that she might have lost some
of her jumps since she's been too busy studying at Yale. I'm also
concerned if Michelle will try anything new like any triple-triple
combinations for her new programs? Any comments?

U S Figure Skating
FIGURE SKATING: Jenny Kirk Announces Carroll and Congemi as New Coaches

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - U.S. bronze medalist Jennifer Kirk announced
today she is beginning a new partnership with coach Frank Carroll. She will also
work with coach Ken Congemi and choreographer Lori Nichol. Kirk made the move
from Detroit, Mich., to Hermosa Beach, Calif., earlier in the week. This move
marks the end of her two-year partnership with former coach Richard Callaghan.

"I'm very grateful for all of the hard work that Mr. Callaghan put into my
skating in the past couple of years," said Kirk, who turns 20 in August. "We had
many successful competitions together. Now I'm hopeful that being in a fresh
location and training with Frank (Carroll) and Ken (Congemi) will give me a new
outlook on my skating. I'm very optimistic about the future."

Kirk, originally from Newton, Mass., began her career with longtime
coaches Mary and Evy Scotvold in South Dennis, Mass. After graduating from high
school in the spring of 2002, she moved to Detroit to train with Callaghan, who
is also well known for coaching six-time U.S. champion Todd Eldredge. Under
Callaghan's coaching Kirk won the bronze medal at the 2004 State Farm U.S.
Championships and placed 18th at the 2004 World Championships.

While touring with Champions on Ice during the spring of 2004, Kirk had
the opportunity to take a week-long break in California. She was immediately
attracted to the West Coast lifestyle and was able to fit in a try out with
Carroll. After a few weeks back in her hometown of Boston she reached her
decision to make the move.

"I had been thinking about a change for a while," Kirk said. "There wasn't
one certain factor, one competition or one event that made the decision. It was
an overall feeling - I wanted a change of scenery and to hear someone else's
input on my skating."

Carroll coached eight-time U.S. champion Michelle Kwan for nine years
before splitting in October 2001. In addition to Kirk he currently coaches 2002
Olympic bronze medalist Timothy Goebel, 2004 World Junior silver medalist Evan
Lysacek and top U.S. ladies contenders Yebin Mok and Danielle Kahle.

Kirk began training with Carroll and Congemi on June 14. She plans to use
the summer to get her new programs choreographed and ready for the 2004-05
season.

I do not think her mom knows how to skate. Michelle began to skate
when she was five years old after watching her brother Ron play ice
hockey. Her sister Karen also skated competitively up to 1996, so she
and Michelle trained together til then. Michelle's mother Estella has
always supported her, but she is more behind the scenes and quieter.
(Her dad Danny is the vocal one, and he was with her by the boards at
competitions during the 2001-2002 season.) I also remember Michelle
saying that her mom doesn't really know anything about figure skating
(like jumps, spins, etc.), but she does come to watch her at
competitions. So, basically, she supports her daughter's love for the
sport, and she has probably influenced how she handles herself in
public (graciousness, ability to overcome disappointments).

In an old interview for DisneyBooks.com, Michelle answered this
question, which might also help you:

Who are some of your role models ouside of skating?

Michelle Kwan: My biggest role models have always been my parents.
They've always been there for me and for my family and for each
other. I've never known two people who worked harder, but they've
never made their hard work seem, well, hard. The reason is that they
do it out of love. My parents are honest with me and keep me focused
on the things that really count. To them it's more important that I'm
enjoying my skating than that I'm winning my competitions. They
taught me how to have respect, discipline, and loyalty. They were
also the ones who first told me "Work hard, be yourself, and have
fun." I still think that's some of the best advice I've ever gotten.

Also, the ISU decided to implement the new COP system for future
events, including the Grand Prix and 2006 Olympics. It will be
interesting to see how Michelle adjusts her programs to score well
under this new system.

The ISU also no longer requires women to wear skirts in competitions,
so we may see some pants next season. The allotted time for the short
program was extended to 2 minutes 50 seconds (maybe because of
Michelle at Worlds?).

Other news:

Jenny Kirk's new coach is Frank Carroll and her new choreographer is
Lori Nichol (both were formerly Michelle's up to 2002).

Sarah Hughes is considering to leave Yale in order to return to
competition.

Should be an exciting new season!

Sold-out crowd watches Champions on Ice
By VICTORIA HIRSCHBERG

HIDALGO - Tears fell down Alisia Almaguer's cheeks when figure skater Rudy
Galindo, a world bronze medalist and U.S. National champion, glided across the
ice at Dodge Arena.

The Edinburg resident also sang along during Olympic silver medalist Elvis
Stojko's upbeat performance to a Jimmy Eat World tune.

When Michelle Kwan, silver and bronze Olympic medalist, took the ice, Almaguer
and her mother Lupe were out of their seats cheering and waving at the popular
American figure skater.

"We watch figure skating faithfully," Alisia Almaguer said.

"I've grown old watching these people and they are one of the best things in my
life," Lupe Almaguer said. "It makes you feel like you see a star in the sky. It
makes you feel like you're going to wish upon a star."

Eleven stars of the figure skating world came to Dodge Arena Sunday afternoon
for a performance of Champions on Ice. The all-star cast also included Dorothy
Hamill, who won Olympic gold in 1976, Nancy Kerrigan, Timothy Goebel, Victor
Petrenko, Dan Hollander, Irina Grigorian, Vladimir Besedin and Oleksiy
Polishchuk. For almost three hours, the cast entertained, shocked, tumbled and
impressed a sold-out crowd in Hidalgo.

Arnold Valdez might not appear like a figure skating fan. With a big cowboy hat,
flannel shirt and belt buckle, the Edinburg resident looked more ready for a
rodeo, but by the end of the show, he said figure skating roped him in.

"We don't have this kind of entertainment in the Rio Grande Valley," he said.
"We want to experience what other cities and states see. It's beautiful to see,"
he said.

Hamill was the favorite for Valdez's wife Lisa.

"It's an unbelievable show," she said. The couple agreed the $100 for two
tickets was worth it.

The show's cast skated together during the opening and finale, but the skaters
also individually performed. Audience members went wild when Galindo skated in a
sailor suit and then U.S. flag sequin tank to a medley of songs from The Village
People like the YMCA.

Hollander, two-time U.S. National bronze medalist, entertained the audience
while playing Elmer Fudd and Bugs Bunny at the same time. His Fudd costume
turned into a Bugs Bunny costume by flipping up his coat to expose a white and
gray fuzzy torso and white tail.

The crowd was in awe, though, when Grigorian, U.S. Open Professional Champion,
swirled numerous rings around her body while ice dancing.

The crowd even winced during Besedin and Polishchuk's tag team performance that
involved tricky handstands, flips and balancing while skating.

Lola Beth Pinson of Weslaco was excited to see all the skaters, especially Kwan,
who performed solo twice. During every split, jump, turn and leap, Pinson and
her friends clapped.

Even when Kwan had a slight stumble in her first routine, Pinson clapped.

"It could happen to anyone," said Pinson, who said the overall performance was
wonderful.

Almost six decades ago, Pinson saw three-time Olympic gold medalist Sonja Henie
perform. Henie, who died in 1969, won gold medals in 1928, 1932 and 1936 for
three different countries.

"That was the first time and I've been hooked ever since," Pinson said.

Joy Wells, director for the new Rio Grande Valley Figures Skating School, hopes
Champions on Ice will bring awareness to the sport in the Valley. The school
offers lessons during public skating time at Dodge Arena after hockey games.

"This is fantastic," Wells said, a former competitive figure skater. "This is
what I've been looking for . I'm looking at this turnout and it's fantastic."

For 10 years, Wells skated professionally in Michigan before moving to the
Valley. Her favorite skater to watch is Stojko, who snuck kisses to lucky ladies
during his second performance.

"I prefer to watch the men," Wells said. "I love their strength, their speed."

It was the first time Wells saw Hamill perform live.

"She's an icon," she said. "It was neat to see you can still skate after all
those years."

       ART

       Cuban themes escape traditional palette

A show by Cintas fellowship finalists includes installations about the sea
and St. Teresa.

       BY FABIOLA SANTIAGO

       fsantiago@...

A white gown made of fishing hooks and netting. Small porcelain boats that
seem to be sailing, one after another, on the cement floor. Color photographs of
paper boats lined up against Havana's famous seawall, El Malecón.

Otra vez el mar, Once Again the Sea, is the title of Juana Valdés'
installation at the Cintas Foundation exhibit, Hope and Glory: The Enduring
Legacy of Oscar B. Cintas, opening tonight at Miami Art Central.

The New York-based artist is one of five Cuban Americans vying for the
annual $10,000 Cintas fellowship created by Cuban arts patron Oscar B. Cintas, a
prominent industrialist and former Cuban ambassador to the United States, to
benefit Cuban artists in exile.

The winner will be announced at tonight's opening reception.

The exhibit at MAC also includes some masterpieces belonging to the Oscar
B. Cintas Collection and on permanent loan to the Lowe Art Museum.

The work of former Cintas fellows -- like Carlos Alfonzo, Cundo Bermúdez,
José Mijares and Mario Carreño -- also will be on display. And two prominent
exiles -- novelist Guillermo Cabrera Infante and architect Nicolás Quintana --
will receive Lifetime Achievement Awards.

Some 285 visual artists, writers, architects and composers have received
Cintas fellowships.

Besides Valdés, the finalists in the Visual Arts include Magda Fernández,
Luis Gispert, Gabriel Martínez and Eduardo de Soignie.

Their work consists of modern installation art, in contrast to the
traditional school of Cuban painting of previous Cintas fellows.

In addition to the sea theme, Valdes' installation includes 25 photographs
of the trajectory of mattresses through New York City.

Fernández's work, Home Sweet Gated Home, examines the isolation and
cookie-cutter identity of gated communities. Gispert's involves a set of photos
depicting exaggerated images of Cuban exile characters and settings mixed in
with elements of U.S. pop culture.

Soignie explores landscapes, movement and Afro-Cuban themes.

A piece titled Orisha Nla is a narrative about santería deity Obatalá.
Another is called Kalunga, a reference to the land of the dead, according to
Kongo beliefs.

Martínez's installation is made up of nine images of St. Therese that
stand before a ''skating ring'' made of salt from the Dead Sea, as if the
figurines were judges in a competition. The pieceis a tribute to figure skating
champion Michelle Kwan.

''Michelle Kwan is someone I adore, she's an inspiration,'' says Martínez,
36. ``And my sister is named after Santa Teresita. She's sort of our family's
patron saint.''

Last summer, a specially huge pink bloom on my favorite rose bush

How can anyone call Michelle has "eight years of failure"?
Five World Champions are not enough for anyone? not to mention a

A successful career should be defined in long and constant

Sorry, I have to disgree. Michelle has the most sucessful career and
she shines not like gold, but like a diamond set in ruby.
She is not a failure in any sense. She is a giant success in
presenting figure skating in its most exciting, graceful and heavenly
beautiful style.

I believe what distinguishes between Tara and Michelle is the
popularity. There are more Michelle fans out there than Tara fans.
And even if Tara has some fans, most of them probably like Michelle
more.

I know Tara sacraficed a lot to fulfill her dreams but so did
Michelle. In fact, Michelle probably made more sacrafices than Tara
did. Even after 8 years of failure Michelle is still not going to
give up until she earns what is hers and that is the Olympic gold.
Many people are saying that she should call it quits and retire but
Michelle would not. I think what makes Michelle and Tara different
is their personality. However, many people think Michelle has the
better personality since she's expierienced failure many times in
her career. I remember in the 2004 U.S. Championship Peggy Fleming
said that with Tara gone Michelle seems to have no more obstacles in
her way. Don't you feel kinda awkward about that? It makes me think
Tara is just letting Michelle hog all the glory and the crowd loves
her more than Tara. Come to think of it even Peggy and Dick Button
like Michelle more than Tara.

I don't write much, but this message about Tara bugs me. As much as
I am a huge Michelle fan, I'm also a Tara fan. Tara achieved a lot
in skating at a young age, but made a lot of sacrifices along her
road. A main reason why she quit amateur skating so soon is because
she wanted to have her family live together again. She and her
mother moved from Texas to Michigan so she could pursue her dreams.
Her father still lived in Texas. Tara told Oprah once that she
decided to not pursue the next Olympic games in Salt Lake because
she didn't want to go another four years without her dad again.
Tara also suffered from a serious hip injury. If she were to
continue with amateur skating, that would be a terrible way to
leave! --Thank god Michelle hasn't suffered a huge injury in her
career!
Even though she wants to become an actress, it's not a snotty thing
really. If she decided to become a skating coach, would we change
our impression of her?
I think if Michelle finally won her gold medal at the last Olympics,
nobody would be commenting on Tara like this anymore. But lets get
this straight, Tara did have the better LP that night in Nagano.
I've watched those free skates so many times on my tape!
We all know that if there was an Olympics every year, Michelle
would've won so many of them.

Yeah, Tara was too proud of herself. But I have to admit she skated well. She
has the talent.
