LOS ANGELES- Chevrolet Motor Division has once again teamed with figure skating
champion Michelle Kwan to award 10 young women $5,000 scholarships through the
Chevrolet/Michelle Kwan REWARDS Scholarship program. REWARDS recognizes and
assists outstanding college-bound female athletes across the United States.
REWARDS (Recognizing Excellence of Women in Academics & Rewarding Dynamic
Student-athletes) provides each selected student $2,000 for the first year of
college, and $1,000 each for the next three years, as long as the recipient
meets renewal criteria.
The program created by Chevrolet and Michelle Kwan and in its third year, has
awarded $150,000 to college-bound students. Ten young women are selected each
year, based on outstanding performance in academics, athletics, leadership,
participation in school/community activities, financial need and personal essay.
More than 5,500 graduating seniors applied this year.
The scholarship recipients were honored in Los Angeles and met Kwan for the
first time at a dinner party in their honor. Disneyland hosted the 10 women,
along with Kwan at Disney's California Adventure, in Anaheim, California. "These
young women represent high-level achievers in education, athletics and community
service," said Mary O'Connor, Chevrolet sales promotion manager. "We are proud
to work with Michelle Kwan on this terrific scholarship program and we
congratulate these great young women." "It has been my privilege to work with
Chevrolet on such a meaningful program," said Kwan. "Looking at the achievements
of these ten student/athletes is a humbling experience. They have already
accomplished so much at such a young age. I know that the best is yet to come
for each of them."
