Good morning and welcome to Sunday. Congrats to Ryan Newman and Matt Kenseth.
When you look at the Chase contenders it's really a microcasm of the whole
season. Half the field is Rousch with one Hendrick team, two Penske teams, one
Evernham team and a Gibbs team. Interesting year and it will be an interesting
race for the Cup.
4 years ago today the United States was attacked on its own soil. We have vowed
never to forget the events of that day, and to avenge those lost. Take a moment
to reflect on that day 4 years ago.

Ince takes over at PPI Racing: James Ince, the irascible crew chief whose energy
sometimes seems boundless and whose intensity can be frightening, is back on the
NASCAR Cup tour. #32 Car owner Cal Wells has put him in charge of repairing and
rebuilding a team that has been struggling mightily this season. And Ince has a
new running buddy on the job site - Eddie Dickerson, a veteran car builder and
shop foreman whose behind-the-scenes work at Hendrick Motorsports for the past
decade has made him a legend. "Cal told me, 'Fix it,'" Ince said. "So I asked
him again, just to make sure: 'When you tell me to 'fix it,' you know what that
means?' I've only got one speed." So Ince is Wells' new general manager, on the
job observing for 10 days now. How driver Bobby Hamilton Jr. might fit into all
this is unclear. Hamilton hasn't said much about his plans for 2006, and has
been dodging questions on the issue for the past month. One key issue for Wells
is engines. He's been leasing engines from Richard Childress this season, but
Childress has been reorganizing his entire engine operation after falling behind
in the horsepower game. But Ince said engines and horsepower aren't an
issue.(Winston Salem Journal)(9-11-2005)
Last time Brothers won, back-to-back? Kyle Busch won last week at California
Speedway and brother Kurt Busch won the race at Richmond this week, becoming hte
first brothers to win races back-to-back since August 1995 when Bobby Labonte
won at Michigan and the following week Terry Labonte won at Bristol.(9-11-2005)
A Chase Refresher: This is the second year of NASCAR's playoff-style system for
determining its Nextel Cup champion. Here's how it works:
. Following the 26th race of the season, the top 10 drivers plus any within 400
points of the leader are broken out for a 10-race showdown called Chase for the
Nextel Cup championship.
. The leader's points are bumped up to 5,050 entering the 27th race. Each
subsequent place among the Chase drivers also has its points reset, but in
incremental five-point drops; so the second-place driver starts the Chase with
5045, the next with 5040, and so on.
. Drivers not involved in the Chase will continue to compete through the end of
the season. While the resetting of points puts the championship out of their
reach, they still have something to race for -- the driver who finishes the
season in 11th place will win $250,000 and the right to attend the year-end
banquet in New York.
. Under NASCAR's scoring rules, the maximum a driver can score at one race is
190 points, while the second-place driver can earn no more than 180.(ESPN.com

Roush rolls five cars into 10-car Chase field
By Jenna Fryer, The Associated Press
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- The "Drive for Five" is alive, but not for Jeff Gordon.
Instead, it's Carl Edwards, the surprise Nextel Cup title contender who gives
car owner Jack Roush five chances to win the Chase for the championship. The
second year of NASCAR's 10-race, playoff-style finish will feature five Roush
Racing cars in its 10-driver field -- including Saturday's winner Kurt Busch --
after Edwards and Matt Kenseth locked up two of the final spots with solid runs
at Richmond International Raceway. "I never thought in a million years we'd be
in the top 10 of this deal," Edwards said after nabbing the eighth spot in the
Chase. "Nobody would have picked us to be here at the start of the year." No, it
was Gordon who topped the list of likely candidates for the title. After all, he
started the season announcing a "Drive for Five" campaign to add to his four
NASCAR championships. But he won't be eligible for the championship this season
after faltering yet again in a high-stakes situation. His shot at making the
Chase ended midway through the race in a fit of frustration. "I'm done now," a
dejected Gordon radioed to his crew after slapping the wall in a race he had to
be nearly flawless in to qualify for the championship hunt. He finished 30th,
and is assured his worst points finish since his rookie season.

McMurray out again; new experience for Gordon
Neither driver will compete for 2005 Nextel Cup championship
By B. Duane Cross, NASCAR.COM
RICHMOND, Va. -- For Jamie McMurray, it's Groundhog Day. For NASCAR, it's A
Nightmare on Elm Street. For the second consecutive year, Jamie McMurray ends
the regular season on the outside looking in at the Chase for the Nextel Cup.
For the first time, NASCAR will see if its 10-race playoff system will draw fans
sans the allure of Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jeff Gordon, who fell from Chase
contention after hitting the wall on Lap 211 of the Chevy Rock & Roll 400 on
Saturday night. Earnhardt Jr. already was out of the Chase picture after
finishing 38th at California one week ago. McMurray entered Richmond with a
one-point advantage over Ryan Newman but could not fend off the No. 12 car's
in-race charge. McMurray finished 40th; Newman was 11th and clinched 10th place
-- the final playoff berth -- by 69 points over Elliott Sadler. "You have 25
other races to try to makes it into [the Chase]," McMurray said, "and we just
didn't run well enough in those. "I could see Ryan ahead of me all night and we
had to beat him; we just couldn't get there."

Newman strong enough to earn spot in Chase
By B. Duane Cross, NASCAR.COM
RICHMOND, Va. -- Ryan Newman raced his way into the Chase for the Nextel Cup,
thanks to a crash on Lap 363 that eliminated Jamie McMurray from contention.
Newman entered Saturday night's Chevy Rock & Roll 400 one point behind McMurray
for 10th place -- the final spot in the playoff field. Newman consistently ran
in front of McMurray throughout the race, and was in the top 10 when McMurray
and Tony Raines tangled with 37 laps remaining. Newman finished 12th, opting not
to push the envelope in the waning laps. "It was not the performance we wanted,
but we got part of the main goal solved [Saturday night] and look forward to the
last 10 races," Newman said of qualifying for the Chase for the second
consecutive year. "That's the most conscious I've driven since last year," he
said. "I could tell Roger [Penske, team owner of the No. 12] was hyped up
because he was echoing everything the spotter would say. He doesn't usually do
that." Newman was as high as fourth in the point standings after Dover in June,
but he struggled down the stretch to Richmond. He has not posted a top-10 finish
since Pocono in July and posted finishes of 30th or worst in three of the past
six races

Harvick's Chase hopes fades along with car
After leading 167 laps, RCR driver settles for 10th
By Ron Lemasters Jr., Special to NASCAR.COM
RICHMOND, Va. -- When the green flag waved for Saturday night's Chevy Rock and
Roll 400, it looked like Kevin Harvick had picked up where he left off in the
Busch Series event the night before. Needing to have a dominant performance to
have at least a slim chance at making the Chase for the Nextel Cup, he led the
first lap from the pole, then checked out, leading 70 of the first 90 laps. His
No. 29 Chevrolet, carrying the likeness of country music star Gretchen Wilson,
was the class of the field early on, and he ended up leading 167 of the first
300 laps. But unlike the night before in the Busch race, Harvick lost his grip
on the racing surface and fell back to 10th at the finish. He also missed the
Chase by 118 points. "We had a really good car the first half of the race,"
Harvick said. "Once the groove moved up, though, we kind of lost the handle on
it and it started pushing the front tires getting into the corner and lost the
forward bite up off and never could really get it back. "It was a pretty good
night. We came home 10th. It could have been better, but it could have been a
lot worse." Harvick said that once the track got slick, his car lost grip at
both ends. "Once it greased up, both ends were slipping," he said. "The front
end started chattering getting into the corner and the back was loose off the
corner. I hated that we couldn't close the deal, but it was still not a terrible
night for us."

RIR fireworks set off by Marlin, R. Gordon
By Ron Lemasters Jr., Special to NASCAR.COM
RICHMOND, Va. -- In a Chevy Rock and Roll 400 that was curiously devoid of
fireworks, Robby Gordon and Sterling Marlin tried their best to provide a few.
Just 90 laps into the race, Marlin crashed in Turn 2. He had help from Gordon's
No. 7 Chevrolet. Gordon, running behind Marlin and Scott Wimmer, went hard into
Turn 1 and cut down in front of Wimmer, but Gordon was carrying too much speed
and went up the track into Marlin, which resulted in a trip to the wall. Revenge
is a dish best served cold, and Marlin let it cool off before returning the
favor on Lap 313 by turning dead right into the side of Gordon's car in Turn 2.
NASCAR responded by bringing Marlin to pit road for a five-lap penalty. Gordon
got his car fixed in the pits. Then, as the caution waved for Wimmer's spin, he
charged up through the field to Marlin's car and rubbed up against it. Gordon
was brought to pit road for his own five-lap penalty for rough driving.

Chasing Kurt Busch
By DAVID POOLE
RICHMOND, Va. - On a night when two more of his Roush Racing teammates
officially joined the championship party, defending Nextel Cup champion Kurt
Busch sent a message to this year's Chase for the Nextel Cup field. Hey guys,
remember me? Busch won the Chevy Rock & Roll 400 Saturday night at Richmond
International Raceway in a race that also saw Carl Edwards and Matt Kenseth lock
down spots in the forthcoming 10-race battle for this year's title. The final
slot in the Chase went to Ryan Newman, who secured the 10th spot when Jamie
McMurray - who'd come into the night one point ahead of Newman in the battle for
the final Chase spot - crashed in his Dodge on Lap 363. Neither Jeff Gordon nor
Elliott Sadler, the two other drivers who had hopes of racing their way into the
Chase at the last opportunity, mustered any real challenge.

Jack Roush owns half the Chase field
By MIKE HARRIS
RICHMOND, Va. - It took Jack Roush 16 years to win a championship in NASCAR's
top stock car series. Now, it looks like he might be a shoo-in to win a third
straight title. A 1-2-3 Roush Racing finish Saturday night in the Chevy Rock &
Roll 400 at Richmond International Raceway assured the team owner of having half
the 10-man field in the Chase for the Nextel Cup championship. Kurt Busch, the
reigning champion, led 2003 champ Matt Kenseth and Greg Biffle across the finish
line on a night when Kenseth wrapped up a spot in the Chase after struggling
through the first half of the season. Mark Martin, who came with Roush to the
Cup series in 1988, had already clinched a place in the top 10 - along with
Busch and Biffle - before the race. But, he came back from two laps down
Saturday after a flat tire early to finish on the lead lap, 13th overall. Carl
Edwards, the youngest of the Roush drivers and perhaps the biggest surprise,
finished 21st in the race and nailed down eighth place in the points, just ahead
of Kenseth, in his first full season in Cup. "I'm really excited about taking
this group of five to the final 10 races," Roush said. "I expected to come out
tonight with three cars in the top 10. I was hoping for four.

Jeff Gordon falters, misses Chase for the Nextel Cup
By JIM UTTER
RICHMOND, Va. - "I'm done now." With those words, four-time Nextel Cup champion
Jeff Gordon joined Dale Earnhardt Jr. - NASCAR's two most recognizable stars -
on the sidelines for this season's Chase for the Nextel Cup. On Lap 211 of 400,
Gordon's No. 24 Chevrolet slammed into the wall exiting Turn 2 in a shower of
debris, prompting those words uttered over his team radio. Although Gordon was
virtually eliminated from any chance to end Saturday night's Chevy Rock & Roll
400 at Richmond International Raceway in the top 10 of points, he continued on,
eventually finishing 30th. Gordon ended up 12th in points after 26 races. He can
now finish no better than 11th - marking the first time he will not finish in
the top 10 since his rookie season in 1993 when he was 14th. Earnhardt Jr. was
mathematically eliminated from the Chase after blowing an engine late in last
weekend's race at California Speedway. "To go through what we've been through,
the attitude and effort that's been put out by these guys is second to none,"
Gordon said. "Certainly our performances are not related to the amount of
effotoprt that has been put into it." Gordon called missing the Chase this
season "disappointing in a disappointing year."

Notebook: Helton warns drivers to behave
By HANK KURZ Jr.
RICHMOND, Va. - Several contending and noncontending drivers talked before
Saturday night's race at Richmond International Raceway about getting aggressive
and even physical, if necessary, late in the race to help themselves or a
teammate get into the 10-team Chase for the championship. NASCAR president Mike
Helton made sure during the drivers' meeting that they knew race officials would
be especially tuned in to signs of that behavior in the Chevy Rock & Roll 400.
"We're not going to officiate the race any differently," he said during the
mandatory meeting, but "if anyone chooses to do anything to alter the outcome of
this race or any other race, we will react very quickly and very severely."
NASCAR likely tipped its hand to the kind of penalty it has in mind two weeks
ago at Bristol when it gave Dale Jarrett a two-lap penalty for crashing into
Ryan Newman. It was retaliation for an earlier accident between the two that
Newman had caused. DIAGNOSTIC DALE Dale Jarrett has mostly himself to blame for
his likely exclusion from the Chase for the championship, thanks to a crash into
Ryan Newman two weeks ago at Bristol. His 31st-place finish, helped by a two-lap
penalty dropped him from 11th to 14th in points, and he remained there entering
Saturday's race. But Jarrett said he warned the brass at Robert Yates Racing in
March that their aerodynamic performance was subpar, and that his comments fell
on deaf ears. "I was told then that our aero department was second to none," he
said. "I'm not good enough as far as aerodynamically to go be specific with
them. I just saw that what they could do wasn't a chassis issue, it was an aero
situation so we're now addressing that. It's a little late, but, hopefully,
it'll be better for these last 11" races.
