StockCarFans.com (Nextel Cup) Newsletter - Monday May 16, 2005
Good morning and welcome to Monday and what has to be my smallest edition ever.
I must have done a really good job on Sunday, cause all the news this morning
seems to be a repeat. I did manage to scratch up a few stories, I'm sure
tomorrow will be really heavy now.
Have a great Monday!

Kyle Busch apologizes to McMurray after tiff
Hendrick driver gets top-five after late bump at Richmond
By Mark Spoor, NASCAR.COM
RICHMOND, Va. -- After battling each other clean for most of Saturday's Chevy
American Revolution 400 at Richmond, things got a little ugly between Jamie
McMurray and Kyle Busch in the closing laps. Then it got a little uglier after
the race on pit road. "He's real mad at me and he says he's going to pay me
back," said Busch. "So we'll have to wait and see what he does." Busch got loose
going into Turn 1 on Lap 394 of Saturday's race. When he tried to correct the
problem, he said he nicked McMurray's No. 42 Dodge. In the end, McMurray, who
had been in position for a top-five finish, ended up 10th. Busch said things got
more heated from there. "He kept poking at me at my face and he scratched me a
couple of times, but, whatever. That's all right." McMurray's side of the story
was a bit more subdued. "It was a little frustrating with [Busch] there at the
end," McMurray said. "He was racing hard. It's frustrating. "He did a good job
all night, but you're always upset when you're the victim." Busch understands.
"I hate it for him," said Busch. "I shouldn't have gotten loose. I had to
correct it. He raced me clean all day and I hope we can bypass this deal and go
on to next week.

No Toyota At Penske Says Wallace
Rusty Wallace says there's -- "Nothing with Toyota at Penske Racing South.
People would think that would be a natural because he's running Toyota in the
IRL Series, and he's the largest Toyota dealer, but he's also one of the world's
largest DaimlerChrysler dealers. We've got a great arrangement now with Dodge.
We've got a contract with them and feel good about it. I welcome all the other
car manufacturers in. I haven't personally talked with Toyota about my own Busch
Grand National team at all. I haven't had any conversation. Although my eyes are
wide open and I'm listening to what everybody's doing out there. I'm paying a
lot of attention to it, but nothing's happened yet. I don't plan it at all. I
don't see Toyota coming to Penske Racing South. I don't see that happening."
Crank Up The Popcorn Maker - It's Getting Interesting
By Dan Hamilton
Kasey Kahne's first career victory couldn't have been scripted any better,
finishing first Saturday night ahead of Tony Stewart, his 2004 bumper tag
partner and the driver he said he most wanted to battle in pursuit of a win. It
all ended well for Kahne on the night , but a lot of other Nextel Cup race teams
found the Richmond race results much to their liking. It was only last year that
Stewart conducted a rough initiation for Kahne, deliberately spinning the rookie
out at Darlington and setting off a pit-road melee at Chicago when he rear-ended
Kahne, leader at the time, into a hard crash on a restart. So it was an ironic
twist to the plot that gave us the sight of Stewart leaning into Kahne's car to
cuddle and coo as he headed to victory lane. But if Kahne says that Stewart has
played a helpful role in his early performances on the NASCAR stage, it only
goes to show how Stewart's grown as a person and how much respect Kahne has
earned as a racer. His numerous close calls and occasionally dominant runs that
failed to produce a win only served to make this victory that much sweeter. The
timing of the win also coincided nicely with Kahne's appearance on the
season-launching episode of FOX-TV's NASCAR Drivers 360. Racing. Show business.
It's all the same thing. Dodge earned its first win of the season with its new
Charger model as owner Ray Evernham took a second consecutive crucial victory
out of Richmond. Last year, Jeremy Mayfield won the fall race there to snatch
the final place among the 10 contenders who would battle for the drivers'
championship. Kahne's win came at the last chance to qualify for next week's
all-star race in Charlotte. The win vaulted Kahne into 16th place in points, 83
out of 10th place, and 301 points back of leader Jimmy Johnson, keeping him in
touch with the pack chasing qualification for the title chase. In fact, the
script delivered a plot twist that benefitted many teams. A 40th-place finish by
points leader Jimmie Johnson allowed a number of teams to either creep within
400 points of Johnson - there's 19 now in all - or move closer to tenth and
bolster their chances of making the title chase. An unlucky day for Kurt Busch
and Jeff Gordon resulted in finishes of 17th and 39th respectively, further
tightening up the standings. NASCAR certainly has to like the sight of more
drivers packing in closer to the points leader, setting the stage for some
dramatic circumstances between now and the next Richmond race, when the final
casting call is made for the season-ending ten-race title chase. Of course, none
of these races are scripted. If they were, we'd be watching a weekly soap opera
called "Dales of Our Lives". But if fans are to be given the intrigue and
entertainment they deserve between now and race #26, then certain characters
have roles they need to play more fully. For the following drivers, the plot
thickens as the weather warms.
