StockCarFans.com (Nextel Cup) Newsletter - Sunday May 15, 2005

Good morning and welcome to Sunday. Quite a race last night. I wondered what
words may have been spoken between Tony Stewart and Ryan Newman about those last
few laps. You can find that in the thatsracin.com section below. Very
interesting.

Have a great rest of the weekend. Enjoy your Sunday.

Up to 13 now: with Kasey Kahne's Nextel Cup Series race win at Richmond, there
are now thirteen drivers who have won a race in each of the National Series
[Cup, Busch and Trucks] AND only Greg Biffle and Kevin Harvick have won at least
2 in each series. Six drivers have won a pole and a race in each of the National
Series. See the list on PAGE 2 of the News.(5-15-2005)

Some News about Jerry Nadeau: injured driver Jerry Nadeau had planned to be at
Richmond International Raceway last night to watch the Chevy American Revolution
400. His plans changed because a death in his family earlier in the week took
him away from his Davidson, N.C., home and he felt like he needed to get caught
up on things when he returned. So he took some time on the phone to talk about
the wreck at RIR two years ago this month that almost took his life and perhaps
will take his career. Nadeau won the pole that day, driving for MB2 Motorsports.
In a practice session after qualifying, he hit the wall hard between Turns 1 and
2 and had to be airlifted out of the racetrack.
He was in a coma for three weeks, in a hospital for three months. The recovery
has been slow and is not yet complete. Nadeau knows he may never drive
competitively again, but he's not ready to give up hope. He hopes that some
tests to be run Wednesday will show that progress has been made and that he will
be able to return one day. "I'm still young and energized and ready to go,"
Nadeau, 34, said. "If the tests go good next week and everything looks good, I'm
going to bug Jay [Frye, MB2 owner] and try to do a test and see where I'm at and
hopefully get in a car in the next couple of months and maybe go do a test. The
doctors have said it takes a good two years. My left side is still numb. I can't
change that. It is going to remain numb for a while. I feel like I'm thinking
better, talking better, just doing better overall."
A NASCAR spokesman said yesterday that the sanctioning organization needs only
clearance from a doctor to allow Nadeau to race again. Without that, he won't
race. Nadeau knows that even with clearance, he's taking a chance if he does
race again. "I have an insurance policy and [doctors] said I was better off
taking the insurance policy and doing something else," he said. "You know what?
I don't know what else to do. All I know how to do is race. I figure I might as
well give it a shot." Since being injured, he said, he's stayed busy enough.
He's taught some sessions in driving schools and may want to turn to that full
time if he can't race. He's traveled to make appearances. "I was in Kentucky two
weeks ago . . . we made a movie of my life and I show that to the fans and then
I'll come out and talk about my life," Nadeau said. "I came to Charlotte with
100 dollars in my pocket and I made it to the Nextel Cup circuit. We haven't
done the tests in nine months with an MRI and we're going to do one Wednesday
and kind of compare. Hopefully there is some bright light and things will look
good. Who knows?"(Richmond Times Dispatch)(5-15-2005)

Penske Happy with Dodge: #2-Rusty Wallace shot down talk of Penske Racing South
aligning itself with Toyota. He said the team is happy with its current contract
with Dodge. "People would think that [switch] would be a natural because he's
running Toyota in the IRL Series, and he's the largest Toyota dealer," he said.
"But he's also one of the world's largest Daimler Chrysler dealers." Wallace
said he hasn't "personally talked" with Toyota about his #64 Busch Series team
but said he would never say never.(Richmond Times Dispatch), remember the
denials in 2000 that Penske would switch to Dodge?(5-15-2005)

Richmond's NASCAR HOF plans: In a news conference at Richmond International
Raceway before last night's Nextel Cup Series race, the proposed hall was
revealed as a 129,000 square-foot building (including 68,000 square feet of
exhibits) on about a 20-acre tract of land. Architectural firms with experience
on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Baseball Hall of Fame and Smithsonian Museum
of Natural History are designing the blueprint. An economic analysis predicted
the hall would be attended by 700,000 visitors in the first year. The study said
competing cities Kansas City, Kan., Daytona Beach, Fla., Charlotte, N.C., and
Atlanta would draw hundreds of thousands fewer fans annually. An economic impact
study projected a $6 million growth in tax revenue -- $4.7 million to the state
and $1.3 million to Henrico County. The details need to be finalized by the May
31 deadline for submitting bids to NASCAR. NASCAR reportedly will announce the
winning city at its Dec.2 awards banquet in New York.(Richmond Times
Dispatch)(5-15-2005)

Gibbs on Leffler: Joe Gibbs may have given more questions than he gave answers
when he was asked about struggling driver #11-Jason Leffler's future Saturday at
Richmond International Raceway. "Obviously, you get concerned," he said. "You
have a huge sponsor there and we're in it for the long haul. We signed Jason for
the long haul and we are certainly going to go after it with Jason and try to
get everything done we can there." Still, Gibbs said failure is not an option.
"It always boils down to performance," Gibbs said. "It's gotta be a performance
thing. We've got to be successful there."(NASCAR.com)(5-15-2005)

Kahne beats Stewart in nip-n-tuck battle at RIR
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Kasey Kahne raced to his first victory on NASCAR's premier
series Saturday night, putting the domination of Roush Racing and Hendrick
Motorsports to rest -- at least for a night. While points leader Jimmie Johnson
and Hendrick teammate Jeff Gordon had miserable nights and Roush's Kurt Busch
struggled, Kahne finally finished a race that he started with one of the
strongest cars. Kahne, a six-time pole-sitter and six-time runner-up in his
career, just beat Tony Stewart off pit road after all the leaders pitted under
caution with about 67 laps to go. The Evernham Motorsports driver gradually
pulled away from Stewart on a restart with 61 laps remaining, and then again
three more times. The last came with seven laps to go, and when Kahne got clear
of Stewart after a one-lap battle, he left Stewart to battle Ryan Newman for
second and won by 1.67 seconds in just his 47th career Nextel Cup race. Unlike
the Busch race a night earlier, when 14 Nextel Cup drivers took part in a
crashfest slowed for 66 of 253 laps by caution, this race featured long
green-flag runs and 21 lead changes in the first 300 laps. Kahne accounted for
the 21st when he got by Stewart on lap 295, and it seemed only cautions gave
Stewart a chance to regain the top spot. Kahne allowed none of it, pulling away
each time to hang on for the first victory for the new Dodge Charger on an
unusual night that made the points race a whole lot closer. "It's so awesome.
The pit stops were unbelievable," Kahne said in Victory lane. "It's just such a
great moment for us. We drove so hard all night racing tonight and ended up
beating him. That was so cool." Stewart, who led eight times for 143 laps, hung
on for second in his Chevrolet, followed by Newman's Ford and Kyle Busch of
Hendrick.

Hendrick front-runners struggle at Richmond
By Marty Smith, NASCAR.COM
RICHMOND, Va. -- Hendrick Motorsports entered the Chevy American Revolution 400
with a stranglehold on the Nextel Cup Series point standings, but that advantage
took a considerable hit as drivers Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon both suffered
DNFs at Richmond International Raceway. Johnson was the first to exit, when Joe
Nemechek and Michael Waltrip hit the brakes in front of him on Lap 81. Johnson
also hit the brakes, but rookie Travis Kvapil behind him was unable to slow down
in time and spun Johnson's Chevrolet into the inside wall. "Nights like
[Saturday] it feels good to have a points lead," Johnson said. "Cars in front of
me were sliding around and checked up. It was a chain reaction deal." Johnson
spun into the inside wall, damaging the rear of the Lowe's Chevrolet. But it was
his trip back around the track en route to pit road that marked his demise. "I
was making my lap back around trying to get to pit road and went down the
backstretch and the steering failed," Johnson said. "When I climbed on the
brakes, with all the camber and caster in it, I turned right into the inside
wall again. "If it didn't hurt the car too bad that I backed it into the wall
the first time, it killed it the second time." The resulting DNF was Johnson's
second in the past three weeks. Johnson entered Saturday's event with a
127-point lead over teammate Gordon, but by the time the checkers flew that
advantage had dwindled to 41 points over Greg Biffle.

Sadler finally gets a top-10 at Richmond
Robert Yates Racing driver pulls within 150 points of leader
By Marty Smith, NASCAR.COM
RICHMOND, Va. -- Todd Parrott gave Elliott Sadler a big ol' bear hug and every
last member of his team offered congratulatory pats on the back. The driver was
elated, relieved, as if a heavy burden had been lifted from his shoulders. No,
Sadler wasn't in Victory Lane. And while he didn't win the Chevy American
Revolution 400 Saturday night, he did finish seventh. And when you consider that
he'd finished outside the top 20 in nine of his 12 career starts at his home
track and never better than 12th, it's easy to see why it felt like a win. "Man,
this is an awesome weekend, great weekend, best weekend I've ever had I think,"
said Sadler, a native of nearby Emporia. Key word: Weekend. Sadler nearly won
the Funai 250 NASCAR Busch Series race before finishing second to Carl Edwards
in a physical duel to the checkers. "To run that good in the Busch car last
night and come back, struggle at the beginning of the (Cup) race and keep
working on it, it was awesome on long runs, I'm just so proud of my guys."
Sadler has finished in the top-10 in all three short track races his season - a
stark contrast to last year's effort when he finished in the top-10 just once in
six short track events.

Gibbs says struggles won't last over long haul
By Mark Spoor, NASCAR.COM
RICHMOND, Va. -- Joe Gibbs may have given more questions than he gave answers
when he was asked about struggling driver Jason Leffler's future Saturday at
Richmond International Raceway. "Obviously, you get concerned," he said. "You
have a huge sponsor there and we're in it for the long haul. We signed Jason for
the long haul and we are certainly going to go after it with Jason and try to
get everything done we can there." "It always boils down to performance," Gibbs
said. "It's gotta be a performance thing. We've got to be successful there. "I
think what we're focused on more right now is everybody together trying to get
that team where it should be. It's a first-year team. It shows you how hard this
sport is. He's been caught up in a lot of stuff. "We didn't dream we'd be that
far down with him and struggling like we are." Leffler has struggled mightily in
his first season behind the wheel of the high-profile No. 11 Chevrolet. He sits
36th in the Nextel Cup standings heading into Saturday night's event.

Kahne closes the deal, forces way into win column
By DAVID POOLE
RICHMOND, Va. - Before Saturday's Chevy 400 at Richmond International Raceway, a
TV interviewer asked Kasey Kahne which driver he'd most like beat to the finish
line to get his first Nextel Cup victory. "Tony Stewart," Kahne said, without
hesitation. Just 400 laps later, Kahne's wish was granted. After finishing
second six times, last season's rookie of the year finally broke through for his
first victory in NASCAR's top series. And Stewart finished second, just barely
holding off Ryan Newman. "It's so awesome," said Kahne, who also qualified for
next Saturday's Nextel All-Star Challenge at Lowe's Motor Speedway with the
victory. "I can't believe it, we drove so hard all night to beat Tony. That was
really cool." Kahne and Stewart have trod similar paths toward Nextel Cup
racing. Both made a racing name for themselves in U.S. Auto Club competition in
the Midwest, and brought glittering open-wheel resumes with them to stock-car
racing.

Newman, Stewart race hard, clean
By JIM UTTER
RICHMOND, Va. -- After it became apparent Tony Stewart was not going to be able
to catch race winner Kasey Kahne, he still couldn't relax. Ryan Newman was
working Stewart hard, looking for second place in Saturday night's Chevy 400 at
Richmond International Raceway. Stewart was able to hang on, but only after a
tense side-by-side battle around the track. "I told him he is a hell of a race
car driver. Anybody else I would have knocked out of the way," Newman said of
Stewart. "We've got a lot of respect for each other even though we've beat heads
once in a while." Newman's third-place finish gave his No. 12 Dodge team its
first consecutive top-five finishes of the season. He was fifth last weekend at
Darlington, S.C. "It's good for us as a team to run in the top five two weeks in
a row. We've struggled to do that this year. Hopefully, we can keep it up."

Biffle happy with Richmond finish, sets sights on Charlotte
By JIM UTTER
RICHMOND, Va. -- Greg Biffle knew he had a top-10 car and wanted to finish with
one, anything else would be a bonus. Biffle stayed up front most of Saturday
night's Chevy 400 at Richmond International Raceway and came away with a sixth
place finish, but also came away trailing series points leader Jimmie Johnson by
just 41 points. Johnson and Hendrick teammate Jeff Gordon experienced problems
early and spent much of the race in the garage area. Biffle trailed Johnson by
148 points entering the race. "It was a great night for us. This isn't one of
our best race tracks. We do mediocre at these places," Biffle said. "I drove
real smart all night. "I may have been a little bit better than that, but we
kept getting those cautions and my car was better on the long runs." Biffle now
turns his attention to Charlotte, where he believes his team can contend for the
win in the Coca-Cola 600. "I possibly think we can win Charlotte. Our test went
extremely well," he said. "I'm excited about that, about the tracks coming up
and our race cars. Doug (Richert, crew chief) has been building fantastic race
cars."

Jimmie Johnson makes early Richmond exit
By HANK KURZ Jr.
RICHMOND, Va. - Greg Biffle went into the Chevrolet 400 third in the points race
and aware his luck could change quickly. "Short track racing at Richmond on a
Friday or Saturday night, it's real easy to make mistakes and that's what we're
trying not to do," he said before starting ninth on the three-quarter-mile oval.
On lap 81, points leader Jimmie Johnson became Exhibit A. Johnson was running
26th, two spots ahead of where he started, when he was nudged into a spin by
Travis Kvapil in Turn 2. The spin ended with Johnson's Chevrolet slamming
rear-first into the inside wall. "It just was a chain-reaction deal," Johnson
said. Johnson then tried to hustle his damaged car onto pit road for repairs. On
the way, it suddenly took a hard left back into the wall. "My steering failed,"
he said in the garage. "If it didn't hurt the car bad enough the first time, I
killed it the second time." A short time later, the team said he was done for
the night.

Kahne Wins First Race At Richmond
CIA Stock Photo
Twenty-Five year old Kasey Kahne has been waiting all his life for this moment
-- his first victory a Nextel Cup car. Before the race started, Chris Meyers
asked Kahne who he'd enjoy beating most when he finally picked up his first win.
The answer was Tony Stewart and it was the No. 20 of Stewart's following him
across the line to finish second. Stewart was the first person to Kahne's car to
congratulate him when the race ended. Kahne led a total 242 of the 400 laps on
Saturday night to win the Chevy American Revolution 400 at Richmond
International Raceway. It was the first victory for the Dodge Charger in over 30
years and the first for Dodge this season. Ryan Newman finished third followed
by Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick, Greg Biffle, Elliott Sadler, Bobby Labonte,
Michael Waltrip and Jamie McMurray. Jimmie Johnson crashed out on lap 81 and
never returned to the track. Johnson finished 40th and lost ground in the points
race but still leads Greg Biffle by 41. The win puts Kahne in next week's
All-Star race in Charlotte. The Nextel Cup Series is off next weekend but the
Nextel Cup All-Star race will be at Lowe's Motor Speedway on Saturday night for
a non-points paying race -- but the drivers will run for over a million dollars.

NASCAR Penalizes Teams For Late Appearance
NASCAR held at least a dozen cars on pit lane before practice yesterday,
penalizing the teams for being late to the prerace inspection line at Darlington
Raceway last week. Jeff Gordon served the worst punishment, missing 26 minutes
of practice. Jimmie Johnson, Scott Riggs, Carl Edwards, Michael Waltrip, Casey
Mears, Matt Kenseth, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jamie McMurray, Kyle Busch, Robby
Gordon and Tony Stewart also were held and missed between 10-15 minutes of the
session. "With all the weather that we had at Darlington, the schedule was
shortened," Jeff Gordon said. "With all the changes that we had to make in
practice, we lost a lot of time and we paid the price big time for it. I
understand what NASCAR's doing. They need to keep the inspection line on time,
but I think when you've got 11 or 12 cars, and top teams, that are late to the
inspection line, there's obviously a problem there beyond just the teams lagging
behind."(Richmond Times-Dispatch)

put the domination of Roush Racing and Hendrick Motorsports to rest for a night.
