Promising Run Cut Short for Waltrip and NAPA Chevy in Darlington
Huntersville, NC (May 9, 2005) – Michael Waltrip qualified the NAPA AUTO PARTS
Chevy in the 19th position for Saturday night’s 500-miler at Darlington Raceway.
Any chance of a strong run was ended early. During a restart on lap six after
the first caution of the day, contact from the No. 43 car of Jeff Green sent
Waltrip into the outside wall in Turn 3. The heavy damage forced Waltrip to pull
behind the wall so the NAPA team could make repairs.
"I'm baffled,” said Waltrip. “I was running down the back straightaway on the
first lap of green, and he hit me, run me over and wrecked me.”
On lap 40, Waltrip rejoined the race 33 laps down to the leaders in the 42nd
position. Waltrip pitted for a nose clip on lap 183 to improve the handling of
the No. 15 NAPA Chevy. On lap 99, Waltrip was the recipient of the “lucky dog”
pass, but still 32 laps down and up to only the 39th position. By lap 110,
Waltrip was running only a tenth off the leaders pace.
Waltrip made contact with the No. 43 car on lap 207 bringing out the seventh
caution of the day. He was docked a one lap penalty. Both Green and Waltrip were
called to the NASCAR trailer after the race. Afterward Waltrip addressed the
media.
“They just asked that we not get around each other," Waltrip said. "That is good
with me, because the only two times I've ever had him behind me this year he's
spun me out."
Waltrip finished the race in the 34th position, dropping him one spot to 17th in
NASCAR NEXTEL Cup driver’s points. Elsewhere on the track, Greg Biffle came home
with the victory, using fresher tires to pass three cars during a
green-white-checkered finish. Jeff Gordon finished second, Kasey Kahne, Mark
Martin, and Ryan Newman rounded out the top five. Teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr.
posted a strong eighth-place finish.
