# TODAY - May 9th: Tyson's Pit Crew Championship in Mooresville, NC, info on
my Pit Crew News/Links page

# Hornish to the #2? or Paul Tracy? Newman unhappy? With all of the
speculation about who will replace Rusty Wallace in the #2 car next year,
everyone has forgotten about two-time IRL champion Sam Hornish Jr., who
already drives for Roger Penske. I [Yahoo's Bob Margolis] hear that he's at
the top of the list to replace Rusty.(Yahoo! Sports)
AND Rumours about the racing future of Toronto's Paul Tracy in NASCAR were
ratcheted up this weekend. This time the 36-year-old Champ Car World Series
driver is being wooed by Penske Racing South. While there have been stories
linking Tracy to a proposed American Le Mans Series team planned by Roger
Penske, this is the first time that people are talking about him joining up
with Penske's NASCAR program. The nucleus of the talks revolve around Penske
needing a driver to replace Rusty Wallace in the #2 Dodge. More intriguing
is talk in the NASCAR garage that Ryan Newman is unhappy with his progress
in the #12 Penske Dodge.(Toronto Sun)
AND II Roger Penske's search for a new driver to replace retiring Rusty
Wallace has become one of this sport's biggest mysteries. #42-Jamie McMurray
seemed the obvious pick for a while, but car owner Chip Ganassi doesn't seem
a bit interested in letting McMurray move over to arch-rival Penske.
#16-Greg Biffle has also been in the heavy speculation since his contract
with Jack Roush is up at the end of the season. Biffle insists he's sticking
with Roush. but adds the caveat that even if he were thinking about moving
on, he'd be foolish to say anything about it right now.
The latest Penske speculation focuses on Paul Tracy, a wildly aggressive
Indy-car star who once drove for Penske - and who once worked with Matt
Borland, one of Penske's top NASCAR crew chiefs, who works now with Ryan
Newman. Borland said that Tracy might be a bit too aggressive for NASCAR's
got-to-get-along world, but Borland said that if Tracy brings the right
attitude, it could certainly work out. And Borland said it would be "very
interesting" to watch Tracy learning to adjust to the NASCAR tour.(Winston
Salem Journal)(5-9-2005)

# Biffle plans to stay at Roush: Greg Biffle says he has been too busy to
solidify his plans for next season, but he was expected to meet with his
agent last week and still intends to stay in the #16 car at Roush Racing.
"We're not any closer because we haven't had a chance to talk," Biffle says.
"They're going to take care of me because that is where I want to be. It
would be crazy for me to want to go somewhere else because I might lose the
next whole season getting geared up with a new team." Biffle is the only
driver in the top 10 whose contract expires at the end of 2005 without an
option, which is another reason--besides a stellar 2005 performance,
including his victory Saturday night at Darlington--he is in high
demand.(Sporting News)(5-9-2005)

# Ganassi has no plans for Marlin, to the #07? #40-Sterling Marlin said last
month that he didn't think he'd be back at Chip Ganassi Racing next year
because the car owner had been reluctant to discuss a new contract with him.
Ganassi said Marlin can change that via on-track performance. "Right now, we
don't have a plan for Sterling for next year,'' Ganassi said. "But if he
wins a couple of races, it's not like we can't change our plans.''
Assuming he needs a new job next season, garage speculation has him moving
over to Richard Childress Racing to drive the #07 Jack Daniel's Chevy that
Dave Blaney currently pilots. Jack Daniels is a Tennessee-based company that
would love to be represented by a homestate driver. Busch series driver
David Stremme, who is part of Ganassi's development program, is most
commonly mentioned to replace Marlin in the #40 Dodge.(ESPN.com RPM), NOTE:
have heard that Marlin has already met with Jack Daniels's reps and is a
front runner for a Jack Daniels's sponsored ride, it could be in the #07 RCR
Chevy or Jack Daniel's coud move to another team.(5-8-2005)

# Mikey and Green spar most of the race: #15-Michael Waltrip and #43-Jeff
Green were called to the office after Waltrip clearly spun Green out,
bringing caution on Lap 207. Waltrip and Green apparently have a running
disagreement, with Waltrip accusing Green of jabbing at him earlier in the
race [a lap 8 wreck took Waltrip out of contention], and with the two also
having a clash at Martinsville. Waltrip insisted he was not sure what caused
brought on the unpleasantness. "They said we should not be around each
other," he said after his meeting with the officials. "That'll be good with
me, because the only two times I've had him behind me he's spun me out. It's
unfortunate to have to deal with stuff like this."
"I'm baffled. I was running down the back straightaway on the first lap of
green and he hit me. The sad part is he doesn't have to pay any price and I
get my car tore all to pieces. It's cool with me. If NASCAR says stay away
from each other or you'll regret it, then that's good." Waltrip was
penalized one lap for rough driving after spinning Green out. Green left the
meeting quickly and did not comment.(Speed Channel)(5-8-2005)

# No more buying tires? UPDATE: A NASCAR spokesman confirmed Thursday that
the sanctioning body could require teams to lease tires instead of buy them
during race weekends, with the long-term purpose of limiting testing. NASCAR
representatives have been in contact with Indy Racing League officials about
a similar policy it uses in the IndyCar Series, spokesman Jim Hunter said.
Under current IRL rules, teams are supplied with between seven and nine sets
of tires for an event, depending on its distance, and a maximum of 35 sets
for Indianapolis 500 activities during May. At the end of each event, teams
must return all of those tires. For each of four open tests and three engine
test dates allowed under IRL rules, teams can lease tires from Firestone.
Again, all tires must be returned at the end of the tests. If NASCAR teams
weren't allowed to buy tires from Goodyear specifically for testing and
couldn't keep the ones they bought during race weekends, either, that would
be one way to restrict testing to limits set by the sanctioning body. Hunter
said NASCAR is still only considering such a move and added it would not be
something it would adopt in the middle of a
season.(ThatsRacin.com)(5-6-2005)
UPDATE: Goodyear officials confirmed that NASCAR has proposed a "lease"
situation under which teams would not buy tires, per se, but would instead
lease them from Goodyear. The idea is to limit the number of tires available
to teams for testing, and thus to reduce testing, period. Teams still would
pay the going price for a set of tires, about $1600, but all tires, used and
unused, would be returned to Goodyear after each race. A similar rule is in
place in IRL/IndyCar, for similar reasons. Teams often hoard unused tires
for future track tests, with testing being a major expense.(Speed
Channel)(5-8-2005)

# Busch acts up at Darlington, "actions not befitting of a champion":
#97-Kurt Busch hit the [inside] wall on the first lap at Darlington Raceway.
Then he hit an official with a water bottle, bad-mouthed NASCAR over his
radio and ended up in a closed-door meeting with series officials. "His
actions were certainly not befitting of a champion,'' NASCAR spokesman Jim
Hunter said after the Dodge Charger 500. "He said things that are not fit
for print.'' Busch knew it was going to be a bad night seconds after the
race began. He had started 11th, but didn't even get a full lap in before he
spun out coming out of the fourth turn and hit the inside retaining wall. He
took the #97 Ford into the garage so his crew could make enough repairs for
Busch to continue racing. Later in the race, NASCAR said Busch moved into
the wrong position on the track under caution. Officials ordered him to stop
and get in line where he was supposed to be, but Busch refused. He was sent
into the pits for a two-lap penalty, and NASCAR officials took offense to
the language he used over the radio. They ordered him to turn his engine
off, and he responded my revving it. He also tossed a water bottle out of
his window that hit the official in his pit. Busch was then summoned to meet
with NASCAR after the race. Although series officials looked less than
pleased with the champion, Busch emerged from their hauler with a huge grin
on his face, but nothing to say.(ESPN.com/AP)(5-8-2005)

# Rusty making Monday NYC TV Stops: #2-Rusty Wallace is scheduled to appear
on two nationally broadcasted television shows on Monday (May 9) during a
day's visit to New York City. The first stop on Wallace's agenda will be on
FOX-TV's "Fox & Friends" which airs at 7:00am/et. This offbeat morning show
features Anchors E.D. Hill, Steve Doocy and Brian Kilmeade. As their
promotional materials boast, they take a look at the day's news, sports and
weather from a different perspective. It is an interactive show where you
can call in to voice your opinion or have your e-mail read.
Wallace is then scheduled to be a special guest on "The Tony Danza Show."
Hosted by Danza, one of America's most recognized and likeable television
personalities, the show is a one-hour talk show with guests that include
actors, athletes, newsmakers and real people with interesting stories to
tell. Monday's guests on "The Tony Danza Show" will also include actor David
Hyde Pierce, who is appearing in the smash Broadway hit "Spamalot." "The
Tony Danza Show" airs locally on Charlotte's WCNC-TV at 4:00pm/et. Consult
your local listings for stations and broadcast times in your area. Wallace
will also visit the "ESPN Zone" where he is to be interviewed by ESPN's "The
Pulse" and by ESPN News.(Tom Roberts PR)(5-7-2005)

# Nadeau not coming back as a driver? From a Winston Salem Journal story
with quotes by former Cup driver Ernie Irvan, who survived two bad wrecks
with head injuries: "Jerry [Nadeau] is going to be a part of my foundation
[Race2safety -race2safety.com], because he's a head-injury survivor too.
Jerry was just racing go-karts with us, and Jerry whipped our butts. Jerry
is definitely gotten a lot better. I don't know if he'll ever get back
racing. He said he won't."(Winston Salem Journal)(5-7-2005)

# MB2/MBV Motorsports to move? UPDATE: hearing that the MB2 Motorsports #01
U.S. Army and MBV Motorsports #10 Valvoline teams [and #36 tean of Boris
Said] will move the team from their Concord, NC shop to Mooresville, NC in
the Eaton building on Rt 115. Per the Mooresville Tribune, the Mooresville
Commission voted to extend an economic grant for $16,512 a year for five
years to Team Property Partners LLC, a race team relocating from Concord to
the Eaton Corp. building on NC 115 in Mooresville (4 miles from where I
live).(12-23-2004)
UPDATE: Three more Nextel Cup teams will call Race City USA home when MB2
Motorsports moves into the vacant Eaton-Aeroquip complex in late summer.
Vacant since 2003, Eaton's former automotive complex on N.C. 115 at Timber
Road, south of downtown, will now house the teams of drivers #01-Joe
Nemechek, #10-Scott Riggs, and #36-Boris Said, MB2 officials said Thursday.
MB2 left Mooresville in 2001 for a facility near the Concord Regional
Airport. Jay Frye, CEO and general manager of MB2 Motorsports, said the move
to Concord wasn't a long-term decision. "We liked being in Mooresville," he
said. "We found an opportunity to come back there. The town and the county
were very gracious and excited for us to be coming back." The teams will now
have a little more room to maneuver, moving from 40,000-square-foot facility
to the 144,000 square-foot Eaton building, Frye said. The move is expected
to be completed by September, after a building upfit by MAX Construction
Services of Mooresville. "This strengthens our motor sports cluster that we
have in our community," said Melanie O'Connell Underwood, executive director
of economic development at the Mooresville-South Iredell Chamber of
Commerce. "(The teams) have more opportunity to be closer to suppliers that
we have here." The 40-mile move to Mooresville will also shorten the commute
for many of the teams' 100 employees who kept their homes in town when the
company moved five years ago, she said. Fifteen Nextel Cup, 26 Busch Series,
and 14 Craftsmen Truck teams will now be based in Mooresville, according to
the MSI Chamber.(Mooresville Tribune)(5-7-2005)

# Top Banana and Go ManGo! Chargers Unveiled AND: As part of its
introduction of the new limited production 2006 Dodge Charger Daytona R/T,
Dodge unveiled two new Bud Shootout paint schemes on the #9 and #19 Evernham
Motorsports Dodge Chargers, celebrating the modern rear-wheel-drive muscle
car. Jeremy Mayfield will pilot the #19 Top Banana Dodge Charger, and Kasey
Kahne will drive the #9 Go ManGo! Dodge Charger in Saturday night's race at

UPDATE 2 - This weekend, drivers take a moment to remember Mom in Darlington
Last year, several NASCAR drivers teamed up with Action Performance
Companies Inc., to wish their "NASCAR Dads" a Happy Father's Day via a race
day program at Michigan International Speedway. Now, some "NASCAR Moms" are
getting their due. Veteran drivers #88-Dale Jarrett and #45-Kyle Petty will
pilot Happy Mother's Day-edition race cars during the 500-mile NASCAR NEXTEL
Cup Series at Darlington Raceway. Jarrett's #88 UPS Ford Taurus will include
a nod to his mother, Martha, while Petty will roll out the #45
Georgia-Pacific/Brawny Dodge Charger with a Happy Mother's Day dedication to
his mom, Lynda. In keeping with NASCAR's long-standing tradition of no stock
car races held on the actual Mother's Day holiday, the cars will run on
Saturday night, May 7, 2005. Martha Jarrett, Lynda Petty and several other
NASCAR Moms will be on hand to announce racing's most famous tagline with an
appropriate twist: Sons and Gentlemen, start your engines. This year's
participants in the Happy Mother's Day program also are eligible for a
$10,000 cash bonus. The prize will be awarded to the highest finishing
driver, who then will present it to his mother or her favorite charitable
organization. A percentage of the proceeds from the sales of the Happy
Mother's Day die-cast have been earmarked to benefit the Victory Junction
Gang Camp. The collectibles will be available through Action's usual
distribution channels, including the Action Racing Collectables distributor
network and Racing Collectables Club of America. To locate an ARC
distributor, please call 1-800-411-8404. To join RCCA, call 1-800-952-0708

son, Dalton - FoxSports (5-7-2005)

# Newman comments on rift with Rusty: The never-ending feud between supposed
teammates #12-Ryan Newman and #2-Rusty Wallace is apparently no closer to
abating. Newman has been mostly silent, while Wallace has made no secret of
his antipathy toward Newman and, in particular, his crew chief, Matt
Borland. Newman said the feud has had no practical effect on the team's
performance. "Rusty has voiced his opinion in a lot of areas," said Newman.
"I've maintained a pretty calm stance, and basically our performance has
been related to our performance as a team. We've had our goods and bads
throughout the season, and none of it has been anybody else's fault except
ours."(Gaston Gazette)(5-7-2005)

# What Red Flag? Fox TOLD not to mention it...Why? UPDATE: Fans using
scanners have access to transmissions between producers and TV/radio
announcers, which means that many of them heard Fox's announcers instructed
not to make any on-air reference to the fact that a red flag immediately
came out after the 25-car crash. The information eventually came out - the
race was halted for 43 minutes, 21 seconds - but why deprive television
viewers of valuable information? Was it some cheap ploy to keep viewers from
changing channels?(Gaston Gazette), wondered that myself, the same thing
happened at Phonix when the red flag was out for over 6 minutes when power
was out, I heard about it on the radio coverage, it was mentioned in passing
on TV, AFTER the fact...I was like..what gives....the what happened at
Talladega...why does NASCAR wanna hide the fact there is a red flag...makes
no sense [or cents].(5-3-2005)
UPDATE: Television viewers can now expect to know promptly when a NASCAR
race has been put under the red flag after having that information
temporarily withheld on the past two Nextel Cup telecasts on Fox Sports.
During last week's Aaron's 499 from Talladega Superspeedway, announcers were
told over Fox's internal communications not to mention the term "red flag"
through two segments following a 25-car wreck on Lap 133. When The Charlotte
Observer this week asked for an explanation of the practice, that request
set off an in-house discussion of the practice that went all the way up to
David Hill, chairman and chief executive officer of Fox Sports. "It was a
stupid thing to do," Hill said. "I've never heard anything so ridiculous."
Apparently, personnel in the Fox production truck erroneously believed it
would make a difference if some of its commercials could be aired before
viewers were actually told the red flag was out. "This situation is proof
that a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing," Hill said. "The time a
race goes under a red flag has nothing to do with when a network says it. We
can't change the time the red comes out. That would be like us saying the
New England Patriots didn't score a touchdown when they did, but they scored
three minutes later." Hill said producer Neil Goldberg and his crew now have
a clearer understanding of the situation.(ThatsRacin.com)(5-7-2005)

Busch's Darlington debut done in by tire troubles
By Ron Lemasters Jr., Special to NASCAR.COM
DARLINGTON, S.C. -- The way Kyle Busch was driving the No. 5 Chevrolet on
Saturday night, you could make the case that he was as much a contender as
Ryan Newman, Greg Biffle or Kasey Kahne. Unfortunately, Darlington Raceway
can be a fickle place, and The Lady in Black jumped up and bit the young
driver squarely in the right front tire. "I had a heck of a run going with
the car," Busch said. "It was really fun to drive that piece. We were just
running along through there all night long, just biding our time and trying
to keep the tires on the thing. "I had a really good race car, and I was
really excited that we were going to at least finish in the top five, or
even had a shot to finish third through first. "But I cut a tire down. I
felt it going down the back straightaway pretty late, and I tried to whoa it
up before I got to Turn 3, but there wasn't enough time. It killed the thing
on the right side." Busch was running fourth on lap 275, and was sitting
right there eight laps later when the tire went down. He clouted the Turn 3
wall hard, heavily damaging the car and stopping his charge cold. Despite
the damage, his crew fixed the damage and got him back out after losing just
one lap. He soldiered on to a 23rd-place finish. Despite the misfortune,
Busch was still the top-finishing rookie. "It's a shame for all these guys,"
Busch said of his crew. "They work so hard, and we were good all weekend
long. We had a good car all the way through the race, and it just killed
it."

Biffle goes overtime for Darlington victory
Winner passes Newman's Dodge on green-white-checker restart
By Mike Harris, The Associated Press
DARLINGTON, S.C. (AP) -- Greg Biffle's chances of winning a race he
dominated appeared gone after his Roush Racing team made some late-race
changes. But a timely spin by Mark Martin and four fresh tires were all
Biffle needed to win Saturday night's Nextel Cup race at Darlington Raceway
in overtime. "The second-to-last run there we tried some tire pressure
things and got my car way too loose," Biffle said. "I thought, 'Why in the
world would we wait until the last run to try something?' It went the wrong
way, but we recovered from that." Biffle, who led 176 of 370 Laps on the
treacherous 1.366-mile, egg-shaped Darlington oval, fell behind on a late
pit stop, but got another chance when Martin spun, bringing out the 12th
caution flag just five Laps from the scheduled finish. Ryan Newman, who had
taken charge late in the race, chose to stay on the track while Biffle and
several other contenders pitted for tires. When the green flag waved again
for a two-lap shootout, beginning on Lap 369, Biffle, taking advantage of
those fresh tires, charged from fourth. He passed Carl Edwards, Ken Schrader
and, finally, Newman before taking the white flag for the last Lap

Busch wrecks early, is reprimanded after race
By Marty Smith, NASCAR.COM
DARLINGTON, S.C. -- Kurt Busch had one of the more forgettable nights of his
career Saturday at Darlington Raceway, wrecking on the first lap of the
Dodge Charger 500 and then getting called to the principal's office
afterwards. Busch started 11th, and as the field poured through Turns 3 and
4 on the race's first lap he got loose and spun into the inside wall,
sending him into the garage to fix the front suspension. He returned to the
track 60 laps down and drifted along until the caution flew for debris on
Lap 318. According to NASCAR spokesman Jim Hunter, during that the caution,
NASCAR asked Busch to stop on the racetrack to enable the pace car and the
leaders to pass by. Hunter said Busch was warned that if he failed to adhere
to NASCAR's request he'd be penalized two laps. By NASCAR's determination,
Busch ignored the request, and thus brought him down the pit lane. According
to Hunter, Busch then revved the motor and "screamed several choice words on
the radio," prompting NASCAR to summon him to the transporter after the
race. "His actions were certainly not befitting a champion of this sport, so
we called him to the hauler to talk to him about it," Hunter said.

Busch Has Run-In With NASCAR
Kurt Busch
Kurt Busch hit the wall on the first lap at Darlington Raceway. Then he hit
an official with a water bottle, bad-mouthed NASCAR over his radio and ended
up in a closed-door meeting with series officials. "His actions were
certainly not befitting of a champion," NASCAR spokesman Jim Hunter said
after the Dodge Charger 500. "He said things that are not fit for print."
Busch knew it was going to be a bad night seconds after the race began. He
had started 11th, but didn't even get a full lap in before he spun out
coming out of the fourth turn and hit the inside retaining wall. He took the
No. 97 Ford into the garage so his crew could make enough repairs for Busch
to continue racing. Later in the race, NASCAR said Busch moved into the
wrong position on the track under caution. Officials ordered him to stop and
get in line where he was supposed to be, but Busch refused. He was sent into
the pits for a two-lap penalty, and NASCAR officials took offense to the
language he used over the radio. They ordered him to turn his engine off,
and he responded my revving it. He also tossed a water bottle out of his
window that hit the official in his pit. Busch was then summoned to meet
with NASCAR after the race. Although series officials looked less than
pleased with the champion, Busch emerged from their hauler with a huge grin
on his face, but nothing to say.(ESPN)

Waltrip-Green Spar On The Track
Michael Waltrip and Jeff Green also were called to the office after Waltrip
clearly spun Green out, bringing caution on Lap 207. Waltrip and Green
apparently have a running disagreement, with Waltrip accusing Green of
jabbing at him earlier in the race, and with the two also having a clash at
Martinsville. Waltrip insisted he was not sure what caused brought on the
unpleasantness. "They said we should not be around each other," he said
after his meeting with the officials. "That'll be good with me, because the
only two times I've had him behind me he's spun me out. It's unfortunate to
have to deal with stuff like this. "I'm baffled. I was running down the back
straightaway on the first lap of green and he hit me. The sad part is he
doesn't have to pay any price and I get my car tore all to pieces. It's cool
with me. If NASCAR says stay away from each other or you'll regret it, then
that's good." Waltrip was penalized one lap for rough driving after spinning
Green out. Green left the meeting quickly and did not comment.(Speed TV)

Fan Will Ride With Dale Jr.
Dale Earnhardt Jr.
It's not every day that a girl from Crossville gets to ride in a car with
Dale Earnhardt Jr. But that's what Miechel (Meriwether) Bassett is going to
do next Thursday, May 12. And she'll tell the nation about the experience
the following week. Bassett has long been a fan of stock car racing and like
her father (Roger Meriwether of Crossville) is a fan of the Earnhardts, the
late champion Dale Earnhardt Sr. and the current fan favorite, Dale
Earnhardt Jr. And so the chance to ride around a NASCAR track in the No. 8
car is a dream come true. It happened this way, said her sister, Marcie
Hoskins of Carmi: Back in April, NBC's "Today Show" invited viewers to send
in what they'd like to do before they died. The idea was to choose the top
50 entries in a "Live for Today" contest. Bassett sent an e-mail noting that
she is a stay-at-home mom, who drives a mini-van, and that her dream was to
go around a NASCAR track at 180 m.p.h. Two hours later, Hoskins said, a
"Today" representative called Bassett and asked her why she liked the sport,
how she got interested in it and who her favorite drivers were. She also
asked Bassett to e-mail her photographs of the family's visits to NASCAR
tracks.

NASCAR Confirms Tire Lease Talk
Goodyear officials confirmed that NASCAR has proposed a "lease" situation
under which teams would not buy tires, per se, but would instead lease them
from Goodyear. The idea is to limit the number of tires available to teams
for testing, and thus to reduce testing, period. Teams still would pay the
going price for a set of tires, about $1600, but all tires, used and unused,
would be returned to Goodyear after each race. A similar rule is in place in
IRL/IndyCar, for similar reasons. Teams often hoard unused tires for future
track tests, with testing being a major expense. "Team testing probably
represents a great area of opportunity to save costs," Goodyear field
director Rick Heinrich said. "A lot of these teams go straight from these
races to testing, weekly. "We're here to support the sport and NASCAR. If
that's what's best for the sport and that's what's best for the teams,
that's fine with us. "It would make things more predictable [in tire
production]. That's one of the challenges we have week to week, what we need
to bring to the race track to satisfy team requirements."(Speed TV)

Biffle Holds Off Gordon For Darlington Win
CIA Stock Photo
Good pit strategy and some luck rewarded Greg Biffle at Darlington Raceway
on Saturday night. With 45 laps to go Ryan Newman took the lead in the Dodge
Charger 500 and held onto that lead until Mark Martin spun out with 4 laps
to go. That spin brought out the 12th caution of the night. Newman stayed on
the track while Biffle pitted. Biffle took two tires and Gordon took four
and the caution set-up a green-white-checker finish. On the restart, Newman
was first, Ken Schrader was second, Biffle was third and Jeff Gordon
followed in fourth. Newman and Schrader were on 40 laps old tires and it was
Biffle getting a jump on Gordon, then passing Schrader and Newman to take
the top spot. Gordon pulled his car to second place but Biffle was able to
hold him off for the sixth victory of his career -- in 88th career start,
the third of the 2005 season. Biffle led 176 of 370 laps. Kasey Kahne
finished third followed by Mark Martin, Ryan Newman, Jamie McMurray, Jimmie
Johnson, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Carl Edwards and Tony Stewart to fill out the
top-ten. The Nextel Cup Series moves to Richmond International Raceway next
Saturday night for the Chevy American Revolution 400 -- again a race under
the lights.

Petty Gives Away First Charger
Richard Petty presented the keys to the first 2006 volume production Dodge
Charger to roll off the assembly line to Dwight Kennedy on Saturday
afternoon at Darlington Raceway. Kennedy was the charity auction winner of
the car, and the Victory Junction Gang Camp received $50,000 of the $75,100
winning bid.

Finch Calls For Change In Appeals Process
Car owner James Finch said it's time NASCAR officials changed their
appeals-committee format to make it more a jury of peers, instead of a jury
of NASCAR officials and related officials. "I told them they should have a
panel with a NASCAR official, a media person, and three of your peers,"
Finch said. "And then they should have a panel to set up the rules. "Look at
last week's fines. How many crew chiefs got suspended? None. "They call you
in the room, let you say your piece, and then kick you out. They don't let
you ask any questions of anybody else they might call in. How fair is that?
"I wanted to have them talk to five officials in my case, but they said no."
And Finch said NASCAR should give Woody Neese, the inspector NASCAR fired in
the case, his job back.(Journal Now)

Elliott Will Spearhead Atlanta HOF Effort
Local racing hero Bill Elliott, better known as "Awesome Bill from
Dawsonville," will be the lead salesman for Atlanta's bid to be NASCAR's
Cooperstown. "Million Dollar Bill" - the first NASCAR driver to grace the
cover of Sports Illustrated - will use his strong ties to corporate sponsors
and NASCAR executives to help Atlanta win stock car racing's hall of fame.
The earliest days of NASCAR started in Georgia, and "Atlanta deserves a good
shot at this thing," Elliott said Friday. Atlanta is competing with
Charlotte, Kansas City, Kan., Richmond, Daytona Beach and the state of
Michigan for a NASCAR hall of fame attraction. Bids are due to NASCAR's
decision makers by May 31.(AJC)

Three Teams Move To Mooresville
Three more Nextel Cup teams will call Race City USA home when MB2
Motorsports moves into the vacant Eaton-Aeroquip complex in late summer.
Vacant since 2003, Eaton's former automotive complex on N.C. 115 at Timber
Road, south of downtown, will now house the teams of drivers Joe Nemechek
(No. 1 U.S. Army Chevrolet), Scott Riggs (No. 10 Valvoline Chevrolet), and
Boris Said (No. 136 CENTRIX Financial Chevrolet), MB2 officials said
Thursday. The teams will now have a little more room to maneuver, moving
from 40,000-square-foot facility to the 144,000 square-foot Eaton building,
Frye said. The move is expected to be completed by September, after a
building upfit by MAX Construction Services of Mooresville. The 40-mile move
to Mooresville will also shorten the commute for many of the teams' 100
employees who kept their homes in town when the company moved five years
ago, she said. Fifteen Nextel Cup, 26 Busch Series, and 14 Craftsmen Truck
teams will now be based in Mooresville, according to the MSI
Chamber.(Mooresville Tribune)

Darlington likely in '06 lineup: International Speedway Corporation
officials are planning to have Darlington Raceway on the NASCAR Nextel Cup
schedule next season. "We're fairly confident with the success of this
weekend we'll be around next year," said Andrew Gurtis, who stepped down as
president of Darlington Raceway a year ago to take a position with ISC.
Saturday night's race sold out a week in advance, the first pre-race sellout
for the 60,000-seat facility since it expanded after the 1997 season and the
second sellout during that span. Plans already are underway to improve the
restrooms and make the tunnels to the infield accessible to RVs and trucks.
Track president Chris Browning is planning a proposal for other improvements
such as a new Cup garage more seating. "It's definitely on ISC's list,"
Gurtis said of Darlington. ...Browning spent part of Saturday showing former
NASCAR chairman Bill France Jr. the facility and where improvement are
needed. He said France agreed with most of the needs, but advised him to be
patient before jumping into expansion. "He said maybe we want to see how we
do next year, what our renewal rate is," said Browning, who started a
waiting list for this race that exceeded 1,000. "He's really pleased we did
as well as we did. Let's make sure we can do it again and it's not a
freakish thing." Browning plans to move forward with plans to turn the area
outside Turn 2 into a year-round campground. If approved, he said the money
earned could go toward facility improvements. - The State

Roush Not Worried Of Toyota Moving Up; Anxious To See What They Do: NASCAR
officials say they expect Toyota to submit a car and engine for next year's
Busch series by the July1 deadline. Toyota entered the Craftsman Truck
series last season and many expect the manufacturer to move to the Cup
series as early as 2007. Car owner Jack Roush said Toyota will challenge the
other manufacturers. "Toyota will bring the most advanced engine in the
series, that's for sure," Roush said. "I'm not sure what they've got for a
car. We've got to redo all of our engines now. We're anxious to have Toyota
come in and show us what they'll do. As long as NASCAR puts them under the
same set of templates and the same testing rules apply, I think we'll just
be fine." - The Roanoke Times

Conflicting Account - "We are not working on any Busch cars," States Toyota
Rep: Patrick Wall, manager of Toyota Racing Development in High Point,
confirmed that Toyota has participated in the discussions about the "Car of
Tomorrow" and "Engine of the Future" which could bring as early as 2007
significant changes from the cars and engines used now. But, he said,
Toyota's plans hinge on the timetable for implementation of the rules
changes and that the only series Toyota will race in next year is the truck
series. "We currently race trucks and we are looking at racing cars," Wall
said. "We are doing an investigation into the best path for Toyota to get
into car racing, and we are waiting on NASCAR to give us the timetable for
the 'Car of Tomorrow' and 'Engine of the Future' before we determine what
the best plan for us will be." ...He denied that Toyota is developing a car
to race in the Busch Series next year. "We are not working on any Busch
cars," he said. He said that it did not make sense financially to develop a
car now if the rules are to change significantly in the near future. "When
you look at the cost involved, it takes a couple of years to get a payback
on that investment," Wall said. He also denied that Benson or any one else
has tested a Toyota stock car. "I can assure you that there has not been a
Toyota-bodied stock car or a stock car with a Toyota engine on a track
anywhere on the planet since we raced in the NASCAR Dash Series with Robert
Huffman in 2003," Wall said. - The High Point Enterprise*

Defending champion's word choice spurs NASCAR action, warning:* NASCAR
officials apparently have grown tired of reigning Nextel Cup champion Kurt
Busch's propensity to bad-mouth series officials over the radio. He did so
again Saturday night after he was parked for two laps late in the Dodge 500
at Darlington Raceway after failing to follow an official's directive. While
arguing the call on pit road - which was to stop on the backstretch after he
passed the race leader under caution - Busch bad-mouthed officials over his
radio, then revved his engine and tossed a water bottle at an official.
After the display, NASCAR ordered Busch to cut off his engine and held him
for a "cooling off" period. He was allowed to return to the track, but told
to report to the NASCAR hauler after the race. In the meeting, Busch was
given what will amount to his "final warning" regarding his language
directed at series officials, sources confirmed. Busch may yet face some
additional formal penalty next week, NASCAR officials said.
- The Miami Herald*

Biffle charges past, gets Dodge 500 win: Just when it appeared he'd lost a
race it looked like he was surely going to win, Darlington Raceway helped
give a Dodge 500 victory back to Greg Biffle Saturday night. In a remarkable
turn of events, Biffle surged to the lead just after a restart for a
green-white-checkered finish and held off Jeff Gordon and Kasey Kahne in the
frantic final moments of the first nighttime Nextel Cup race held at this
historic track. ...At the checkered flag, Biffle had earned his third
victory of the season. Gordon was second, Kahne third, Mark Martin fourth
and Newman fifth. - That's Racin' ---
