Waltrip works hard, but can't get past Kurt Busch
By JIM UTTER
AVONDALE, Ariz. - Michael Waltrip beat and banged his No. 15 Chevrolet
all
over Phoenix International Raceway in a spirited attempt to run down
race
leader Kurt Busch. But the reigning Nextel Cup Series champion would
not
relent. Busch finally held off Waltrip by 2.315 seconds to win Saturday
night's Subway Fresh 500 - the first night race at the 1-mile oval. The
win
is the defending champion's first of the 2005 season and 12th of his
career.
He remains second in points, behind Hendrick Motorsports' Jimmie
Johnson,
who finished 15th Saturday. "Once we got into the lead, I backed it
down
just a little bit in case there were some late yellows so we'd have the
tires to pull away," Busch said. "When I did that, he started to catch
us.
"I had to pick up the pace a little bit, change my line. He was running
strong and he was going to drive as hard as he can to get that 'W,' and
bouncing off that wall and trying to keep it straight, Michael was
there."
