NAPA Racing______

Dover, Dele. (Sept. 27) -- Michael Waltrip piloted the NAPA AUTO PARTS
Chevrolet to a 16th-place finish in Sunday’s MBNA America 400 at Dover
International Speedway holding on to the 16th position in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup
points race.

Waltrip started the 400-lap race from the fifth position, his fourth top-five
start of the season. The car started off too loose on the exit of the corners
and Waltrip lost several positions trying to hold on to his racecar. Once the
team pitted on lap 49, Slugger decided to make a track bar and an air pressure
adjustment to tighten up the NAPA Chevy.

The adjustments were too much. By lap 90 Waltrip said his car was too tight and
was passed by the race leader on lap 104. New changes were made to Waltrip’s
car during the second caution. At the halfway point, Waltrip claimed the 20th
position and was the first car one lap down. A caution flag would give Waltrip
the “lucky dog” award, but the caution never came. A long green-flag run caused
the rear end of Waltrip’s car to slide. More chassis changes were made to the
No. 15 Monte Carlo during a green-flag pit stop.

While Waltrip did gain positions on the race track moving to the 16th position
where he finished the race, the race leader (Ryan Newman) was so fast, he put
all but eight cars at least one lap down.

“I had my hands full for a while with the NAPA Chevrolet,” Waltrip said
following his 16th-place finish. “I almost spun off of turn four a couple of
times, but the team made wise calls in the pits and we did the best we could
keeping up with the car and all it threw at us.”

Newman dominated the race leading 325 laps and claiming his second victory of
the year. Dale Earnhardt Jr. finished eighth and moved to third in the chase
for the championship.

THE NEXTEL CUP Series will race at Talladega Superspeedway where Waltrip and
crew return as defending champions of the 500 mile event. The race will be
broadcast live on NBC and MRN Radio beginning at 2:30pm (EDT).
