Thank you Solberg for taking time out of your schedule on Fathers Day weekend to come out and provide this service to the DG community.
Here's a question that hopefully will spark some respectful discussion...
Should John receive financial compensation from the PDGA for photos used in a
publication?

I've taken photos for years at the Majestic with no compensation. I
consider it
my staff position for the event. Plus, it's my way of cataloging the
event on a
personal level. I've always sent them into the PDGA and basically get a photo
credit for photos used. I've also always posted them on the MFA online Yahoo
group. All I've ever asked for is that if any photos are reprinted in
magazines, fliers, programs etc., that I'd get credit for the photo taken.
However, if they feel compelled to provide stuff I can give away to my Disc Golf League players as CTPS, I have no Problem whith that, however, cash to me, Nope.

Thank you Solberg for being a classical definition of "Paying it Forward"
If you find yourself wanting to re-pay Solberg for his efforts, take the time, money or effort to do something for someone else who could benefit by your contribution.
On a personal note its kind of ironic to see such a capitalistic spirit toward this. So much for hope and ............well nevermind.

I asked the question because it's a topic that often comes up in the world of
photography. Should photographers "give away" their work? On another post John
states that his photos are up on the web and are free for people to use with the
exception of commercial use. If the official PDGA mag runs some photos isn't
that commercial use? They certainly are getting $$$ to run those mags.
Newspapers are bleeding money and they cut their staff photographers because
readers submit images for free (or maybe $5). For the paper that's a good deal
as long as their readers don't notice a difference in quality.
If the PDGA doesn't have to pay for the images they run they can use that money
for other stuff (like little aluminum membership tags). Or if they gave John
some dough (or merch) he could use it locally at one of his fine leagues which
more than likely turns out a few new PDGA members each year.
This also somewhat ties in with Brian Mace's "Manifesto" that he posted years
ago where he calls out the Disc Golf community for criticizing any
vendors/TDs/LDs when they make money related to Disc Golf events. He warns
everyone that unless we are open to paying these types of people instead of only
relying 100% on volunteers we will continue to primarily be playing for each
others money week after week.
Again, this is just something to talk about and i'm just using John's situation
because it's current. I personally think that a photographer can do whatever
they please with their photo rights... I spent all day in the sun so forgive my
ramblings :)

Your views are definitely food for thought! It would be nice to be
compensated
in some way from the PDGA using our photos, but since it's a player run
organization, I'm not sure their ready to do that? They have
photographers all
over the country willing to provide their photos just to see them
printed in the
magazine. I could definitely see rewarding the photographer for providing the
"Cover Shot" for the magazine. I run a league as well and the thought of
compensating merchandise would be an awesome benefit for the use of our
photos.
I like John, am not interested in being paid monetarily. I do it for the love
of the sport and to help provide a means of showcasing the events to our local
and national organiztions.
Your efforts behind the lens are appreciated throughout the community and you know it.
But seriously....Admit it......You have a little addiction to snapping photo's don't ya?.... Is it the click of the shutterlens that gets your goat? Or the occaisonal belly shot? Or maybe it is the paparazzi feel you get from shooting the superstars up close? Or just the shear enjoyment when discovering a great shot? Enquiring minds want to know!

I'll be sure to keep clicking! Like I mentioned, taking pictures at
events has
always been a hobby of mine. I love doing it and I'm always looking for the
perfect shot. And yes, I do like the fact that I can get up close to the Big
Dogs and capture them while playing. I've had several Majestic players tag my
photos this year from the four albums I posted on my facebook page. If feels
good to know that the players appreciated seeing my work behind the lens.
btw, the PDGA does have my permission to use photos and will be getting the full size photos soon!
