Pay to Play courses are definately going to start rearing their
heads. Bryant Lake is part of the Regional Park system which is why
there is a fee, it's not just for the DGC. Many State parks have
courses and if you don't have a yearly/monthly pass you pay a daily
fee. Willow Creek in Hudson is another example.

Because Kaposia and North Valley and others are city parks, a fee is
tougher to administer. Kaposia has toyed with the Pay to Play idea
many times. The downfall is you need to have security or a system in
place to make sure everyone is paying. The only other option is a
collection box, but...if the perps are running off with 5ft tall,
60lb metal baskets, a little metal box on a tree/pole wouldn't stand
a chance.

Best medicine at this point is to go out and weld every damn bolt on
every damn basket on every damn course, bury those suckers in about
5ft deep of cement, wire them up to a circuit breaker and after dusk,
turn the electricity on!!!

Or...talk to EVERYONE on the courses (recs, walkers, etc..). Get to
know the ones around you, the regulars, the newbies. Form a group
from the people you see everyday on your home course and be vigilant.

Tony

Let's be careful not to set up the wrong incentives. If the bounty
is for recovering the basket, we'd just be a convenient "fence" for
the thieves. We'll end up with baskets being stolen just for the
reward money.

Instead, the bounty should be on the criminal's head. I'd let a few
baskets go unrecovered if it meant that word got around that anyone
who steals a basket faces the combined resources of all of us to get
them prosecuted. That may involve hiring private investigators if
the police aren't interested.

Nobody robs Domino's deliverers anymore, because they know the parent
company will spend $15,000 to prosecute a $15 theft.

Very commendable idea, but how do you enforce a pass at courses like The
Valley, or Kaposia? Perhaps the pass should be in the form of a yearly or
daily window sticker for your car, with a tag that corresponds that you
carry on your person, with additional tags to be purchased for each
additional person in said vehicle to be enforced via the police (doubtful)
or some parks person. But, again this kind of thing would have to go through
the community's parks department, and most likely through their local
government, an idea that would really piss off the individuals who don't
play disc golf, and are just using the park in some form of other
recreation.

Unfortunately, the basket theft, and stolen disc issue will continue as long
as disc golf is continued in its current from. Pay to play on private
property is the only real answer to the current and growing problems.

Aside from DG being tons of fun, there are some
economics at work here. Take one of the best baskets
available (like a Mach III). A Mach III costs less
than a half-decent / borderline-shitty set of golf
clubs. You can use it in your backyard, and it's
going to last 30+ years. (Try installing a
maintaining a putting green in your yard. You're
talking about big $$$ and a lot of work. Yes, I
actually considered this at one point.)

A rec golfer and rec disc golfer will probably spend
about the same per year on balls or discs. Not too
much, really. Less than $100. More serious players
will spend more, but in either case you're getting
your money's worth.

Greens fees are the second killer though. When I
stopped playing golf 5 years ago, even the public
courses were over $20 per 9.

One prediction that I have about disc golf is that we
will start to see more fees on the courses. Maybe not
greens fees right away, but something more like Bryant
Lake every day of the week. Right now, you have to
have a pass to get into Bryant on the weekends. It's
$25 per year for this pass, so it's not exactly big
money. The course is much less crowded on the
weekends than most other parks. As the courses reach
critical mass on number of players, something has to
give.

The yearly pass at Bryant is for a large set of parks.
There's only the one disc golf course, but I can see
where a group of parks (like North Valley and Kaposia
for instance) could get together and have a yearly
pass. Could put this money toward things like wood
chips and signs, take some pressure off the rec
departments' budgets, ease up congestion, and let
those of us who use the courses pay more for them.

There will always be tons of the free rec-9 courses to
get new players in, and give the teenagers a place to
hang out.

That's so sad it's almost funny. Hopefully it was a
one time prank, and not a sign of things to come.

My neighbor caught one of the kids from down the
street trying to get into my garage. He wasn't trying
all that hard, just checking the lock, but I'm sure it
was because he sees me outside putting all the time.
I doubt he wanted my lawn mower.

I went down and had a little chat with him and his
friends, and they seemed to agree that it would be
better for them to stick to skateboarding and not
touching my garage.

Is it a sign that I'm getting old when I'm thinking
"what the hell is wrong with kids these days?" It's
not like he couldn't have just come and asked to use
the basket. I would have been happy to show him how
to throw.

There will always be tons of the free rec-9 courses to
get new players in, and give the teenagers a place to
hang out.

We should all carry some lightning plastic for such events. If you
see this happen just whip it at his knees and hope you can muster
some accuracy. If you miss...who cares, you ain't gonna throw it
anyways.

Rick here I have a bunch of flyers made up to put at
the courses right now. What I would like to know is
how much is the bounty going to be for the recovery of
these baskets. I have talked to a few people about
this idea of mine. all we need is to get it approved
and run with it. The flyers can go up this weekend at
the local courses. Trust me I want to catch these
bastards so damn bad. Break those fingers.. Anyway
could you call the house tonight. 651-552-8654

Timmy had a tough round this morning and dropped back. He rebounded with a
strong 46 to finish tied with Walt Haney in 8th. Middlecamp came in with a solid
10th place tied with Heeren and Wyngaard.

Live Final 9 scoring should start about 3pm our time. Climo is leading by one
over Keith Warren and Cam Todd. Schweberger, Schultz and McCray should be
playing off for the 4th spot in the Finals right now.
