I asked the question because it's a topic that often comes up in the world of
photography. Should photographers "give away" their work? On another post John
states that his photos are up on the web and are free for people to use with the
exception of commercial use. If the official PDGA mag runs some photos isn't
that commercial use? They certainly are getting $$$ to run those mags.
Newspapers are bleeding money and they cut their staff photographers because
readers submit images for free (or maybe $5). For the paper that's a good deal
as long as their readers don't notice a difference in quality.
If the PDGA doesn't have to pay for the images they run they can use that money
for other stuff (like little aluminum membership tags). Or if they gave John
some dough (or merch) he could use it locally at one of his fine leagues which
more than likely turns out a few new PDGA members each year.
This also somewhat ties in with Brian Mace's "Manifesto" that he posted years
ago where he calls out the Disc Golf community for criticizing any
vendors/TDs/LDs when they make money related to Disc Golf events. He warns
everyone that unless we are open to paying these types of people instead of only
relying 100% on volunteers we will continue to primarily be playing for each
others money week after week.
Again, this is just something to talk about and i'm just using John's situation
because it's current. I personally think that a photographer can do whatever
they please with their photo rights... I spent all day in the sun so forgive my
ramblings :)
