I live in Humboldt up in Northern CA so I'm not in the
Bay Area. I bought my bike at a bike shop up here.

Sorry, I forgot to mention the price tag. I spent
$450.00 out the door and that included a helmet, a
good bike lock and a fitting and tune up with brake
adjustment and everthing, but I was also in the market
for a new bike anyway. Good Luck!!!

I bought a Trek 7.2fx for my first Mermaid triathalon
last year in Santa Cruz. It was AWESOME!!! It got me
up and down all the hills and has good speed and
transition. Very easy. My best friend, however, just
borrowed a ten speed from someone and had it tuned up
and fitted to her and it worked great! She did both
the track in Fremont and Santa Cruz with that bike.
From what I know of Fremont, the track is totally flat
so you could easily find something on Craig's List for
a decent price and just get it nice and tuned up and
fit for you. It'll be fine what ever you choose and
have a great time!!! I did!!!

I have seen so many different kinds of bikes in triathlons/duathlons--all shapes, sizes and varieties. I think most people who have done a tri/du before will agree on one thing: make sure you get fitted to your bike. There are so many little nuances related to how you should sit, reach the pedals, hold the handlebars, etc. Every bike shop out there can do a professional fitting. It costs anywhere between $40 - $250, depending on the place. I actually had a friend of a friend fit my bike, someone extremely savvy about biking.
My first year I had a hybrid; I put some street slicks on it (thinner tires than the "nubby" ones), and it got me out and back just fine.
Whatever you decide, make sure you get to know your bike, take some workshops on changing a tire and changing gears, clinics on road riding and get out and have fun!

Subject: [mermaidfriends] FW: Puppies in need of Homes- Black Labs and Beagles
Dear Friends,
Please pass this along to your circle of acquaintances. Someone must have a place in their heart (and home!) to welcome a new dog.
-Angie
Anyone know anyone who wants a puppy? Please read below and forward to anyone you think might be able to help (if you don't want a puppy :( -forwarded messages below)
1) Beagle Puppies Alza Corporation, a Johnson & Johnson Company is closing their Mountain View facility.
The animal test facility has 40, 16 month old beagle puppies that DESPERATELY need good loving homes.
These dogs were NEVER tested.
If you know of anyone, a rescue or are interested in helping give these puppies homes, please contact Rick Bible at azoulaybible@hotmail.com .
The facility manager will have to put them to sleep if no homes are found by OCTOBER 15TH.
2) Black Lab Puppies
Anyone know anyone who can take in a black lab pup?
----- Rescued 6 black lab (mix) puppies out of the middle of the road on Saturday. PLEASE help find them homes - otherwise, it's Animal Control - which means they only have 5 days. We've bathed them, sprayed them for fleas and wormed them....but we can't keep them.
They are currently in a kennel in my basement since I don't have a fence. I've lost count of the number of rescue groups that I've contacted, only to be turned down due to no room.
Please check with every dog person you know to see if they need a puppy .

This is probably a pretty far-fetched hope, but did anyone happen to pick up a pair of black and green (sentimentally valued) flip-flops? For some reason I took 'em off at the top of those stairs and forget to go back and retrieve...
Thanks for all your awesome energy out there - made for a very inspiring swim, bike, and run!
Well, that explains the time difference. Thanks also for opening up the transition area instead of restricting it by waves - made for less congestion. Great race. See you next year!

Hi Sara,
The bike course this year was different than last year. Last year
there was some major road construction going on so we had to cut out
just over 2 miles. This year we were able to go back to the original
course, making it 11 miles instead of 9 miles.
Thanks,
Carlo

You can totally wear a sports bra with no shirt, BUT you have to wear a number on your front side while you run. If you want to go shirtless, then you'll need to purchase a race belt that you can put on before you run. I'm sure the Sports Basement tent will have one you can buy for around $6-$10 tomorrow morning.
You can wear whatever you want under your wetsuit!! :) I recommend tri shorts and your sports bra/shirt.
Hi Helen, sports bra is ok. If that is what you are used to wear for running etc and you know it won't feel too cold...go for it. Wear it under your wet suit. Remember you need to wear your bib number when running and biking.
