Hello!
I have seen so many different kinds of bikes in triathlons/duathlons--all shapes, sizes and varieties. I think most people who have done a tri/du before will agree on one thing: make sure you get fitted to your bike. There are so many little nuances related to how you should sit, reach the pedals, hold the handlebars, etc. Every bike shop out there can do a professional fitting. It costs anywhere between $40 - $250, depending on the place. I actually had a friend of a friend fit my bike, someone extremely savvy about biking.
My first year I had a hybrid; I put some street slicks on it (thinner tires than the "nubby" ones), and it got me out and back just fine.
Whatever you decide, make sure you get to know your bike, take some workshops on changing a tire and changing gears, clinics on road riding and get out and have fun!

bike, does anyone have a recommendation? I cannot spend a ton of
money so something good but reasonable.
