Hi all,
Many many thanks to everyone who helped out with the shared Cycling
Promotion Fund/Bicycle User Group marquee under very trying weather
conditions on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We survived sheltering from the
elements in the big marquee, re-christened the "Melt Zone" by some
attendees!
Here's some pix I took on Sunday:

Big thanks to Rose especially for putting together the roster and organising
such a terrific attendance from Melbourne's vibrant bicycle user group
community.
Hopefully we'll be putting together more of these *Pan Galactic* BUG
displays in the future, if you have any great ideas or know of upcoming
events, please let us know. Also if you left behind any promotional
material, please contact the office so they can be returned.

Hi all,
There's veritable smorgasbord of cycling and transport-themed delights on
this weekend (see list below signature) at the Sustainable Living Festival
at Federation Square. For all the details, see the SLF website:
http://www.slf.org.au/festival/
The Cycling Promotion Fund is having a mega-marquee at the Transport Hub
with several Melbourne-based bicycle user groups, cycling groups and the
crew from Bike Fix. We'll all be located at St Paul's Court, which is simply
opposite St Paul's cathedral on Flinders Street between the "shard" and the
SLF site office. Look for marquee number S4, or simply look for all the
friendly bike folk. Our marquee will have plenty of great bike information,
tips and even tasty bike treats, such as free puncture repair kits.
Cycling Promotion Fund:
http://www.slf.org.au/festival/program/exhibitors/485
The festival runs from Friday 16 February from 10am to 6pm, Saturday from
10am to 6pm and Sunday from 10am to 5pm. As the weather forecast is looking
HOT, please ensure you have plenty of water, adequate sun protection and
don't over do it in the heat. Our marquee is approx 6m x 3m, is undercover
and we'll try to make sure there is plenty of water & shade on hand.

The Power of Community - How Cuba Survived Peak Oil
Fri 16th: 8:20pm - 9:15pm Main screen
When Cuba lost access to Soviet oil in the early 1970s, the country faced an
immediate crisis - feeding the population - and an ongoing challenge: how to
create a new low-energy society. Cuba transitioned from large, fossil-fuel
intensive farming to small, less energy intensive organic farms and urban
gardens, and from highly industrial society to a more sustainable one.

Hi
Bugger - I had thought that people had slowed down a bit since those
signs went in. Your next move after taking out a small child would be
to take yourself and a large rock to the Yarra, wouldn't it?
I wonder if the Bike Cops would be up for a joint activity? My feeling
is that speedsters are utterly selfish and will only slow if they
think they are in peril of not being able to go along there at all. If
the cops pulled some over and we (as peers) & they (the law) talked to
them about why it's bad for everyone, that might be useful.
Agree that we want to keep things positive. Could conceivably turn it
into a positive PR thing for Melb BUG - get one of the local papers
involved. Don't howl me down, just brainstorming.
I'll see if I can find out how MCC are feeling in the aftermath of the
child being hurt - I suspect they will have gone into orbit.
Goes to show that there are 4WD dickhead equivalents on bikes, eh?
Can you call me at work to discuss further, O Urban one?

Hi everyone...
As you will all know, southbank is an issue for cyclist and pedestrian
conflicts.
Recently the council lifted it's cycling ban and replaced the dismount
signs with speed limit 10kph signs.
There is currently a trial underway to see if this fixes the problems
that have been reported.
Last week a 7 year old girl was hospitalised after being hit by a
cyclist outside Crown Casino.
I have been down to southbank during morning and evening peak hour and
I have noticed some cyclists travelling at speeds I consider to be too
fast.
What can we do?
I am considering a little xerocracy exercise, perhaps with the
consent/approval of Melbourne BUG. Would you be willing to help me
between 6:30 and 9:30am (or any part thereof) the week after Critical
Mass?
I can design and print flyers.
I promise to make them sound a bit nicer than BV's latest press
release about cyclists without lights.

VOTE FOR JASON DEN HOLLANDER
I have been a BV member for many years and I'm running
for Council to help get 'more people cycling more
often'! Growing up with a dutch father and living
there as a child has given me a passion for all things
'bike' and the many benefits that all can enjoy from
cycling.
I have diverse cycling interests ranging from my daily
CBD commute, riding with my wife and daughters, long
bunch rides with friends into the hills and club
racing.
I have an active involvement in my local
BUG(Boroondara), the committee of Hawthorn Cycling
Club and school cycling activities gives me a vast
insight into the cycling community and it's needs.
I am committed to environmental sustainability and
community consultation, both within and beyond current
Bicycle Victoria membership. I will further the
formation of partnerships with local cycling groups,
councils and other groups maintaining communication
with the whole community.
I am committed to safer, well maintained and connected
metropolitan bike paths across council areas.
Insurance is a key reason why Bicycle Victoria members
join and I will make sure that this is improved
further in the current financial insurance
environment.
I support an integrated approach to bicycle
development in all of Victoria, the potential for bike
trails as well as bike lanes in regional towns is
positive and the time is right.
I will offer a younger 'fresh' perspective to the
council to help BV build onto its current growth and
assist our cycling community to develop into the
future.
Please vote for me in October in the Bicycle Victoria
elections. To contact me, email: fdutch@..., ph:

Hiya MBUG,
There's a copy of the letter to City of Melbourne in the Files
section of the MBug Yahoo group. I'd actually forgotten that I had
put it in there back on May 23:
Lygon Crt - Melb CC letter 23052005.doc
Re: on-street parking proposal oustide Lygon Court 324 KB
nearherethere May 23, 2005 Edit
I have to date recieved no written reply. I rang City of Melbourne
about three weeks ago and spoke to Gordon Harrison and Andrew Cronn
(9658 8439) was surprised to hear that I had not got a letter back:
He indicated that he had drafted a reply that was to be approved and
signed by a councillor...? But hey, I never got it...
In any case his answer to me on the matter was:
"While we can see some value to supplying more bike parking in that
area, there are several reasons why it won't happen in the way that
you suggest in the foreseeable future.
1) It would use up a large chunk of the 'bike parking' budget at once.
2) Those who decide how the road / traffic management budget is spent
would not agree to it.
3) There are already several car parking related issues in that ares
(read noisy residents' groups), they would be miffed to 'lose' three
parking spaces."
At this point I made it clear that we (MBUG) would be happy with even
just one space converetd to bike parking. He still said "Hmmmm, very
difficult"
4) There is deemed to be enough bike parking off road (on footpath)
to meet demand, except perhaps for Monday nights (cheap movies at
Nova)."
So I guess that means that nothing is going to happen.
My personal thoughts on it all are that;
A) Melbourne is UTTERLY CRAP at responding to letters phone calls and
emails on anything. It is like talking to a big dark empty cave.
B) The campaign is worthwile and we should stick at it, but should
rethink our stratgey.
C) Happy to get other MBUG members' thoughts, and will try to make it
to next meeting.
I thought this was for all BUGs We got an email from Ben Zipper I replied saying we'd be along but I've heard nothing since Contact benz@... for details I suggest

Apologies if I have sent you this twice, though I suspect my school email address mangled the message the first time.
There's gonna be a street party and it all about alternative living, so come away from your normal lives and do some dancing instead of driving!
The attached PDFs make up A4 sheets for you to photocopy back to back, reproduce multiple times, cut into three two-sided flyers and distribute to all your friends, colleagues and good people everywhere. Sounds like fun, hey!
The late-breaking news: I'm in negotiation with Rod Quantock (aka Capt'n Snooze) to appear after the Dresses of Mass Seduction!
By the way I AM embarrassed that the flyer is full of typos. It was a rushed bit of re-typing.
Looking forward to seeing you there!
Simon
...for a moment, a window is opened onto a possible future: a future where no one is in charge and everyone rides a bike!

You may have noticed that Tasmanian Forests have featured in the media lately with John Howard stating "I would like to see, I think most Australians would like to see, an end to the logging of old growth forests, but not at the cost of throwing hard working Australians and their communities on the scrapheap. I will not see those communities betrayed." A source has suggested the plan would protect significant areas of old growth forests including icon areas such as the Tarkine and the Styx Valley.

Greetings cycle advocates
Melbourne BUG has at last settled on a new venue for meetings and is ready to
restart
regular gatherings to discuss campaigning on cycling issues in the City of
Melbourne
municipality. We hope to be focused on campaigns/advocacy and educational
activities
such as workshops, but we're welcome for anyone to get involved who might wish
to help
the BUG run social activities or host any other cycling-related events. The keys
to MBUG's
success will be to aim to achieve realistic goals and practical outcomes to our
lobbying
efforts.
The first campaign off the rank will draw attention to the shared paths of
Southbank and
the Carlton Gardens. Cyclists often traverse the Carlton Gardens as a natural
extension of
Canning St and Queensberry St cycling routes, but bikes using the park is a
touchy subject
with some other park users. There are shared paths around the edge of the
Gardens but
these are less than adequate as they cross many driveways, and often pedestrians
are not
aware that the footpaths are shared paths. Melbourne BUG made a submission to
the
Carlton Gardens master plan in March this year asking for allowances for
cyclists but more
attention needs to be drawn to this busy cycling crossroads.
At Southbank, Melbourne City Council are asking police to enforce "Cyclists
Dismount"
signs, due to the behaviour of a minority of cyclists who ride along the
promenade at
excessive speed. Russell Lindsay of the Melbourne Bicycle Police has asked
Melbourne BUG
to help inform cyclists that unsafe riding along Southbank could cause the
thoroughfare to
be closed to bikes. While we're at it we can suggest to Southbank pedestrians
that bikes
can safely share the space.
We're planning to produce flyers and signs, and to do shifts handing out this
information
and speaking to people at these locations about the need to share these spaces.
Other
ideas include encouraging cyclists to ring their bells in shared zones with
pedestrians, a
letter writing campaign and a media release.
What do you think of these issues? Would you like to get involved? What other
cycling
issues do you want to address in the City of Melbourne?
Our new meetings venue, the cafe/bar Prudence on Victoria St, North Melbourne,
offers
drinks and coffee (but you don't have to buy anything if you don't want to) and
a relaxed
atmosphere. They expect that the upstairs room will be ours alone for most
meetings.
The next meeting is at 6.30 pm on Wednesday 8 September.
Prudence
368 Victoria St (near corner with Howard St)
North Melbourne Ph: 9329 9267
Meetings will continue at Prudence at 6.30 pm on the second Wednesday of every
month.
See you there!
is up and running in Melbourne.. and we need your help!!!The election has been called and is only 6 weeks away..!! Now more than ever is the time to raise the awareness on Old Growth Forests and help stop the destruction of these forests!!
On Thursday 2.9.04 we have organized a ride to Blackburn. We will be handing out stickers and fliers at the train station, meeting the Liberal MP, the Labor candidate and also getting our heads (and bikes) in the local papers! All cyclists of all levels of fitness welcome!!
**** Meet at Friends of the Earth, 312 Smith st, Collingwood @ 8am.This easy ride will take about 1.5 hours… For those not able to ride with us, you can meet COGF at Blackburn train station from 10am.
On Sunday 5.9.04 The Wattle Festival is being held in Hurstbridge. We will be enjoying a leisurely Sunday ride, where upon arrival we will hand out fliers and stickers to the festival goers… the wilderness society are having a stall at the Festival so we can hook up with them.
***** Meet Friends of the Earth, 312smith st, Collingwood @8am.This ride should take about 2 hours or so.. it is an easy ride so all levels of fitness welcome!!If you ain’t up for the ride you can catch the train directly to hurstbridge.. and meet us there!
On Friday 3.9.04 the election letter writing campaign in being launched at Federation Square from midday…any keen cyclists can head down andchat to the city punters and also do some COGF promoting and try and get people
involved..!
I THINK THAT JUST ABOUT COVERS IT ALL FOR NOW!! Stay tuned for future COGF dates!!There is plenty more to come!!
Oh… what to bring:at least 2 litres of water, smiles, wet weather gear, puncture kit, scroggin’, lunch, snacks… and of course, ya bike!

Hi Christine - Last year MBUG had meeting attendances ranging from 50-odd (at
our
launch meeting) to 10-15 at a regular monthly meeting. But I think that it's
important to
recognise that it's usually the "quality" of the active members, rather than
simply the
"quantity" of them, which plays a big part in the success of a BUG. If MBUG had
100 people
turn up to every meeting but no-one had much to say, then obviously that would
not be as
good as having 15 people turn up, most of whom were keen to get involved in
advocacy
work and talk about cycling issues.
One thing that I've been reminded of often over the past couple of months is
that there are
many people in the Melbourne municipality who are raring to go BUG-wise. If we
had a
core group of (say) 5 or 6 BUG members who were active with campaigning, plus
another
bunch of folks who helped out occasionally, then I'm sure that we could really
start to
move some mountains. But if you're interested in MBUG, please come along to the
first
meeting, meet the other members and have your say there. If you decide
afterwards that
MBUG is not for you, then no worries... but it is equally possible that you'll
think that this
is a group of which you would like to be a part. Personally, I think that we
have the
capacity to learn from our errors (i.e. MBUG's faltering start last year) and
move forward
more successfully & much stronger.
Hope to see you on Sept 8 :)
cheers
Justin
Hi Murray
We could develop a consistent position on the Sandridge Bridge at the
meeting on the 8th of September - hope to see you there. If you're
there, I'll be able to share what I've learned about the proposed city
bike lanes.
Ciao

Chris
It would be great if you could come to this meeting. I think we need
to discuss and be really clear about what we are going to do and
prioritise - because we can't do everything, especially when the BUG
is new and has yet to gain a lot of members and willing hands.
Hope to see you there,
Robin Gallagher
Can you let me know how many people you actually had coming to meetings etc. I can understand the frustration in having small numbers trying to everthing. I guess for me, i would like to know just exactly how many we are talking about. There is a lot of work involved in BUG's and we are all busy in our day to day lives. My experience with other Bug's has left me a bit unsure as to whether i wanted to be involved.
I look forward to hearing from you.
