Friends of Red Rock Canyon needs 5 more volunteers to sign up for our environmental restoration project in Red Rock Canyon Open Space this Saturday!!! Unless we get at least 5 more volunteers, the project will be canceled because there wouldn't be enough volunteers for the City to commit staff time to supporting the project. PLEASE VOLUNTEER by contacting: Amy Ellison at 385-6520, or cityparkvol@... (Please include your name and phone number, and indicate that you want to take part in Colorado Cares Day at Red Rock Canyon.) PROJECT TIME: Saturday July 29 (Colorado Cares Day), from approximately 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Environmental Restoration Work focusing on removal of invasive Chinese Elm trees in the Sand Canyon Area. Small caliper trees will be cut using Bow Saws, Hand Saws, and Loppers, then dragged to a central location. The wood will then be mulched with a wood chopper on the site by the Colorado Springs Forestry Department . Tools will be provided by the City. Before we begin working, Chris Lieber, Director of Design, Development, and TOPS will give a presentation on the history of the elms in our region, their effect on Native Plants and why we need to remove them from Open Space. Youth participants must be 14 years of age or older. Lunch will be provided for all volunteers. Volunteers need to bring water, gloves, sunscreen, sturdy footwear and hats. In case of high temperatures liberal breaks will be taken.
