Greetings,
The results of the Red Rock Canyon planning process show how important it is to be a part of the public processes when issues arise, and the next big issue starts tonight.
This evening, the US Forest Service is holding the first of what could be several public meetings regarding what should be done about Gold Camp Road and its tunnels. For those of you who haven't been in town that long, Gold Camp Road used to be open to vehicular access (cars) along its entire length, from Bear Creek Park all the way to Cripple Creek. In the late 1980s tunnel #3 collapsed and the road was then closed to cars from the bottom of High Drive to Old Stage Road, which is how the situation stands today.
The USFS now feels compelled to repair the tunnel because of its designation as an historic structure, and the question being put before the public tonight, among others, is how much to repair the tunnel, and once repaired, should the entire road be open to vehicular access or remain closed as it is today.
Personally, and this is a personal opinion and not that of Medicine Wheel, I feel that the use of the road which has evolved over the last decade is the best use to which the road can be put. I remember well the days of open car access, and it was not pretty. The discharge of guns, loud music, large amounts of trash, and crime were all common occurrences when the road was open to car traffic. I can only image that the growth of our city since then will make the problems on the road worse.
Those of you who use Gold Camp Road and have an opinion about how it should look in the future, whether you agree with me or not, should attend this open house tonight. It is at:
Cheyenne Mountain High School
1200 Cresta Road
4pm to 8pm
The public is encouraged to attend at any time during this period to speak with USFS officials, to provide input, and to receive additional information.
More information is also available on the USFS web site at:
Thanks and see you there.
