To those who were not able to make it to the first Red Rock Canyon Open
Space Master Plan Meeting (2/11/4), it was fairly informative, with
presentations on the geology and vegetation inventories. This meeting was
mainly to inform everyone about the land and how the Master Plan process
will proceed.
You still have an opportunity to voice your opinion regarding, "What's
important to you when it comes to developing the Red Rock Canyon Open Space
Master Plan?" Go to: http://www.springsgov.com/Page.asp?NavID=4136
to see the form and email your answers to Chris Lieber, TOPS Administrator &
Trails Coordinator for CO SPR (clieber@... ). The comments must
be in to him by 2/19/4 in order to be compiled for use!
All of the comments will be tallied and the results will be used to direct
the planning, so your input, especially with regards to biking opportunities
in RRC, is very important! Even if you only spend 5min to jot something
down quick (for example - bikes allowed on all trails.), please send
something in saying you want the open space to be bike friendly!
Some possible points to consider (these are some of the things I'm thinking
about putting on my list):
- Minimize development (maybe some strategically placed picnic
tables/benches/parking), but not much else.
-Non-motorized traffic only (no cars, trucks, motorcycles, ATVs except for
staff maintenance, rescue, etc.).
- All trails should be multiuse (bikes allowed on all - Palmer Park/Ute
Valley come to mind as models).
- Enough trails to create sufficient loops and minimize distances spent on
dirt roads (and minimize illegal trailbuilding).
- Enough technically difficult trails to challenge cyclists & keep the
speeds down (to ease user conflict).
- Freeride opportunities/area(s) (in order minimize illegal trailbuilding)?
- Adequate signage denoting difficulty (similar to Palmer Park).
- All trails (other than established dirt roads which will be used for
access/maintenance) should be of a narrow singletrack width whenever
possible (as narrow as possible, although horse use may preclude this).
- Try to incorporate some of the sandstone hogbacks into some of the trails.
- Allow rock climbing (may be area specific).
Or anything else that is important to you.
If you want to have the opportunity to provide input as the process proceeds
(when the items submitted now are discussed/debated/decided on), you will
have to attend the future meetings. Again, it is important to have cyclists
present in abundance if you want this opens space to be cycling friendly.
Do you want another Garden of the Gods, or another Palmer Park? The answer
depends on your involvement!
Please forward to every/any area cyclist you know!
