Hello Pamela and everybody else,

Thank you for posting Max's interview! It was great, I trally enjoyed
it. Hopefully, next time they will get the match's score right and
replace Belgium with Belarus :) Just like you, Pamela, I hope they
are going to show at least the highlights of Max's match against Ivo
tonight on ESPN, although I would have have loved to see the entire
match :)
We are all very excited for our dear Max to reach the Round of 16 in
Singles, although Bjorkman is a tough opponent to face. But the Beast
can do it, and we are all behind him! Go Max!
Best of luck in the doubles match tomorrow, big guy!

Cheers to everybody,
Lena

PS. it's really weird what's happened to the posts between April and
June. Oleg, spasibo for your guidance, but I was also unable to
locate any files on my hard drive :(

Jiri Novak and Radek Stepanek, I believe the team they beat in the US
Open final. They will play on the same court Max was on today, court
13. They are the 3rd scheduled match, following Popp/Novak (bummer
he has to play twice in a row. Really, it is) and Myskina/Martinez.

Go get 'em M&M!! & Max, you are ready to move past Jonas. You can
and you will. Loved your interview!

Max Miryni - Day 5
Friday, June 27, 2003

M. MIRNYI/I. Karlovic

4-6, 7-5, 6-7 (1-7), 6-1, 7-5

Q. The serve seemed quite important today.

MAX MIRNYI: Well, just like any other match, my serve is something
that I count on. Today there was no difference. I believe that I was
maybe more consistent and solid on my service games, and that's why I
end up winning.

Q. When you're up against someone who also has such a big serve, does
that put more pressure on you?

MAX MIRNYI: Well, actually, I enjoy this type of match‑up because I
knew that there are some other things that I do much better than him.
I'm a little bit more mobile. So I knew that if I had to stay ‑‑ I
knew I had to stay focused and do what I had to do on my serve, I
would get chances to break him. That was the case in the third set.
The few points in the tiebreakers, I was able to make him play an
extra ball. That happened to be enough for today.

Q. Do you mean specifically that you returned better than him? You
knew you would return better than him?

MAX MIRNYI: Well, he's got such a weird serve. It's actually not very
fast speed‑wise. In the match before, I played against Ljubicic.
According to the speed gun, the speed of the serve wasn't that much
faster. The trajectory it's coming from, it takes some time to get
used to. It certainly caused me some trouble today. But I instructed
myself well enough where, you know, I've made a couple returns when
it mattered the most.

Q. There may not be a player on the tour who works harder than you
have to get here. It's taken a while to get to the second week of a
Grand Slam. Are you surprised that it's taken you this long?>

MAX MIRNYI: Not really, because I just take what I get. You know, I
had a good run at the US Open last year where I got to the second
week. This is my second occasion being in the second week of a Grand
Slam, something that I'm going to try to take advantage of,
capitalise on. Again, it's not a surprise. I don't know what's out
there waiting for me in the future. So I just take it the way it is.
I do work hard. I like my tennis. The fact that I play both singles
and doubles may be one of the reasons taking me a little bit longer.
But, again, it's something that I choose to do. I'm sure doubles game
helps me with my game. I don't want to take it away from me.

Q. John McEnroe said on television you're one of the outside hopes
for the title. Did you know about that? What does that mean to you?

MAX MIRNYI: Well, I did hear that night show when he said that. It
certainly gives you a lot of confidence when somebody of John
McEnroe's stature says something like that. He's been very positive
to me. He's commentated a few of my matches at the Grand Slams. I
appreciate his support.

But there's still a long way away from winning the title. I have to
face Jonas Bjorkman in my next round opponent. That's mainly what I'm
concerned about.

Q. BBC, Sue Barker and Boris Becker were quite beside themselves with
your shirt. Could you comment on that?

MAX MIRNYI: Well, it's not really up to me. I'm being represented by
Nike for the last six or seven years. This is what they choose for me
to wear. I'm being loyal and a good client of theirs. I just do what
I'm told. I like the feel of it. I guess since the Wimbledon
committee has approved this outfit, it should be fine. I hope that
more people like it.

Q. If you win the tournament, there will be no problem?

MAX MIRNYI: There is no problem already because, like I say, the
Wimbledon committee has approved it. It should be just like any other
shirt, just a different style.

Q. How do you feel about the decreasing number of serve‑and‑volley
players?

MAX MIRNYI: Decreasing numbers?

Q. At Wimbledon especially, obviously.

MAX MIRNYI: Well, it's a sad story in a way, but it's a positive
thing for me because the fewer serve and volleyers, the better for me
because I become more of a unique player. I guess the fact that many
tournaments have slowed their conditions with surfaces and balls, it
certainly, you know, favours the back‑court players. Just in general,
I think players have become a lot more physical. The returning part
of the game has been much more closely looked at ‑ many more good
returners than maybe there were 10 years ago. So it is becoming
harder for us serve‑and‑volleyers to win our matches. But, again, I
like my tennis. This is how I want to play. Just makes me work a
little bit harder.

Q. Is it more physically demanding to play serve‑and‑volley tennis
where you have more explosive movements coming forward, side to side,
than sitting on the baseline?

MAX MIRNYI: Well, I think it is in a way, but it's something that
I've been doing for so many years. In fact, this is much more energy
consuming for me playing that way. If I were to be running side to
side too often, this is how I drain myself. I train much more often
going forward and back. This is how I want to play my tennis,
approaching to the net and finishing a lot of the points at the net.
It is physically tough, but this is sort of what I'm trained to do. I
preserve energy that way for myself.

Q. Do you know Ivo at all?

MAX MIRNYI: My opponent?

Q. Yes.

MAX MIRNYI: Well, I've seen him around tournaments for the last two
or three years because he's persistently tried to qualify at many
events. Of course, for his size, it's hard not to notice a guy like
that. You know, I've seen him, I remember, during the grass court
seasons. He always does well here, Surbiton, Queen's, always plays
qualifying at Wimbledon. You always hear these stats with so many
aces. He always plays so many tiebreakers during the year. I was
aware of him, but as far as seeing him play completely for the whole
match, I don't think I ever have.

Q. He has a stutter.

MAX MIRNYI: That was something I was surprised about after Lleyton's
match, he had to speak and say what he feel. There I notice he has
speech problems.

Q. He stutters a bit, but doesn't seem to be too upset. Do the
players respect that fact?

MAX MIRNYI: I don't think that's something he can change at the
moment. I don't know if it's something he can get rid of. You know,
he's lived with it. I'm sure he's just now more exposed being in
front of the camera. I think he's dealt well enough with it. Players
certainly understand this disability. I don't think he's any of a
different guy than all of us.

Q. Still training at Nick's?

MAX MIRNYI: I am, yes.

Q. Boris Becker was talking on the BBC with admiration about your
Yoga, fitness regime. Has it made a huge difference?

MAX MIRNYI: I come from an athletic family. Both of my parents are
athletes. I was very well‑educated as far as physical education is
concerned. From a young age, I was told how to rest, how to relax,
how to eat right. I tend to just keep on going with that. Now that
I'm a professional athlete, I just try to look after myself and do
what I have to do, try to listen to my body. I believe that I benefit
from it, from having a disciplined way of living, looking after my
body. My schedule is very enduring. I play singles and doubles. I
believe that it's a big part of my career and where I am right now.

Q. How do you feel about being called The Beast?

MAX MIRNYI: I don't know. I think it's a positive thing. You know,
people have something to relate to. It's, again, something that I
never picked or chose myself. As long as that's how I relate to
people, if they feel comfortable calling me that, there is another
character out there on the tennis tour, that's fine with me.

Q. Is Nick's academy underrated? What is his best quality?

MAX MIRNYI: Well, I don't know if it's underrated. There are ‑‑ so
many new things have happened to the academy right now because now
it's just became a big sports academy with basketball, baseball,
other sports in there. The way I look at it, it provides me with a
lot of hours of tennis, outdoor tennis, any time of the year. There
are always plenty of guys to practice with.

Nick himself, you know, he provides suggestions here and there. Now,
of course he traveling a lot less. I listen to his advice. You know,
I admire what he has achieved in the sports world. You know, it's a
good atmosphere being in Bradenton and training at Nick's academy.

Q. Best advice he's given you?

MAX MIRNYI: He's never discouraged me. He's always believed in me,
and I appreciate that. You know, he's always been positive towards my
career, towards my singles and towards my doubles career, towards my
mixed doubles career with numbers of partners I've played. He's
provided me a lot of positive support. Just in the tennis‑related
business, he's never really tried to change much of my game. That's
also very important.

Q. Did you speak to Lleyton before the game about Ivo?

MAX MIRNYI: No, I didn't.

Q. You didn't think to?>

MAX MIRNYI: Well, I haven't seen Lleyton. I don't know if he's still
in town. I've seen a little bit of the match myself. You know, I knew
what I had to do as far as my game is concerned. That's how I came
into the match.

Q. Did you have an injury problem? You called for the trainer.

MAX MIRNYI: No, again, I took the advantage to just stretch out and
loosen up. It was actually him calling for the trainer. He had a
callous or blister, bleeding finger. I knew that we were the farthest
court away from the clubhouse and it would take a while for the
trainer to come out. I didn't want to sit and stiffen up.

Q. You're going to your second Grand Slam title? Didn't you win one
with the ‑‑ you have a mixed doubles Grand Slam title?

MAX MIRNYI: Yeah, I have a few mixed doubles and a few doubles titles.

Q. How many would this be now?

MAX MIRNYI: I'm not sure. I think I have four. I won two US Opens,
Wimbledon and US Open in mixed. I believe I'm out to win the fifth.

Q. Where do you keep the trophies?

MAX MIRNYI: I have a few houses. I spend some time in Florida, I do
spend a lot of time in Belarus. Wherever there is near to the house,
I bring the trophy there.

Thanks for the link. It's a good photo of sweet Max. How come
France's Yahoo has his country right, but not the one here in the
USA? Weird, isn't it.

Bjorkman and Max have played 7 times. Max one once, in 2001. The
only other time they played in grass was in Nottingham three years
ago and Max has come a long way since then. This won't be a cakewalk
for either player, but I really believe Max will get through. I
really do.

Hugs to all of you and big squishes to Max!

Game 7 was the longest of the entire match with it frequently going
to advantage Ivo on Max's serve, then back to deuce. Finally Max won
that service game and was not broken. :-) Ivo is getting many more
aces this match than Max, with Ivo having 19 aces as opposed to Max's
6 aces. His average speed of serve is higher than Max by 4 mph, but
still, the other stats are in Max's favor. These stats are so
important.

Great job Max!! Go Max!!

The stats are changing, o/c. The difference is that Max was broken
and Ivo seems to be changing the rythym of the match. The stats are
still neck and neck, but Max's points won on first serve went down to
79% in the second set, and Ivo was at 89%.

Go Max!! Get it back. Do it in four sets instead of three.

Max and Ivo are giants on the court. Their stats are similar and
both are controlling their service games. When they get their first
serve in the other person has only made ONE POINT on it apiece. That
is amazing!

They are in a tie break right now for the first set. Karlovic has 6
aces, Max 1; neither have double faulted. Winning on 1st serve: Ivo
90%, Max 95%; winning on 2nd serve: Ivo 78%, Max 89%; total points
won: Ivo 28, Max 31; Average 1st sv speed: Ivo 117 mph, Max 118 mph;
av.2nd sv speed: Ivo 105 mph, Max 102 mph; fastest serve speed: Ivo
130 mph, Max 130 mph.

This is just incredible and I wish I was there!! I'd be shouting
myself hoarse by now, o/c. GO MAX, GO MAX, GO MAX!! What a match.
This is going to be as close, from the looks of it, as when Max and
Guga played in the French Open. A real war of champions is going
on. I hope Rose and Cat gets to see this one live! If they don't
show this as the highlight match tonight on ESPN then ESPN is a real
sell-out.

Max just took the first set 7-6 in the tie-break!! Go Max!!

I want Max to hold up the championship title. I think Max can do
it! I really do. My only thought is that the only time I don't get
too upset if Max doesn't get through is when it is to someone who is
a decent person and a champion at heart.

I hate it when good guys lose to guys like that jerk Rosedski. They
should make him play with support socks and a muzzle.

Here's to a great match between our wonderful Beast and the guy with
a large heart, Ivo. Have a great Match, Max! Here's to seeing you

It is not often that a match between two players with a combined
ranking close to 250 excites attention, but the Battle of the Beasts
promises to be a humdinger as Max Mirnyi, with a ranking of 43,
trades blows with the Qualifier of the Year, 203-ranked Ivo Karlovic.

Mirnyi is the proud holder of the nickname Beast of Belarus and
jealous to guard it against all comers, particularly those who make
his size 14 shoes and 6ft 5in stature appear puny. Karlovic, his 6ft
10in frame held up by size 15 feet, will be bidding to make Mirnyi
look up to him in every sense.

The Croatian came into Wimbledon as a 500-1 bet, but the folk back
home in Zagreb have crowned him King Karlo the Great and probably
installed him as tournament favourite after what another Croatian, a
certain Goran Ivanisevic, did two years back as a wild card. The
Beasts will stage their earth-shaking battle on Court 13.

Karlovic more than a one-match wonder

Thursday June 26, 2003

By KRYSTYNA RUDZKI
Associated Press Writer

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) Ivo Karlovic is finally getting noticed for
something besides his 6-foot-10 frame.

The Croatian qualifier, who shocked top-seeded defending champion
Lleyton Hewitt in four sets in the first round of Wimbledon, is
through to the third round.

This time there was no giant-killing involved. Karlovic's opponent
Wednesday was Australian qualifier Paul Baccanello, ranked only one
place higher than him at 204.

Karlovic won 6-4, 7-6 (3), 5-7, 6-2, serving up 29 aces.

``If I serve good anything can happen so I can expect the best but I
don't know,'' said Karlovic, who played on outside Court 14 just a
short volley from Centre Court.

``Against Hewitt I played better because I had no pressure and I
could just play my game. Against Baccanello it was a lot of pressure
from everybody and especially me because I expected to win.''

Karlovic beat three qualifiers to enter the main draw. His opening
ace Wednesday was his 100th in the tournament so far.

Croatian countryman Goran Ivanisevic seems to have left some of his
magic on Wimbledon Centre Court since his win in 2001. Last year,
Croatian teenager Mario Ancic beat seventh-seeded Roger Federer in
the first round there.

Both Ancic and Karlovic cite Ivanisevic as their idol.

Karlovic has a tougher obstacle in the next round in his attempt to
prove he's not a one-match wonder. It's Max Mirnyi.

Ranked No. 35 in the world, Mirnyi also is the only player able to
stand up to Karlovic the Belorussian is 6-5. Wednesday, Mirnyi beat
another talented Croatian, Ivan Ljubicic, 6-3, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2.

Monday, Karlovic was staying in a cheap hotel room where he had to
use books balanced on a chair to extend his bed. Now he's upgraded to
a room that costs the same per night as he was paying per week.

Reaching the third round has earned him $27,959 and that could double
if he wins Friday, a marked change from his pre-Wimbledon tennis
career.

``It has been quite tough,'' Karlovic said. ``Sometimes if I didn't
earn enough prize money from one tournament, I couldn't travel to the
next. It has been a little hand-to-mouth.''

----

What a very neat man. I am so very happy for this success for him.
What a great surge forward for him and his prize money won't be too
shabby, will it? I don't know the $$ for going out in the various
rounds.

I want Max to win so very much. But you know, if he has to lose to
anyone, I think I won't mind as badly if it is to Ivo. Just how I
feel.

Hugs,

pamela

Hello all!

Well, writing here for the first time.. But I've been reading this
group at least a couple of months :) Now I'll try to make an attempt
to help.

What about the problem of lost messages - yes, it's a pity that more
than 7 months of messages are lost now.. Seems like there was a data
loss in Yahoo databases (uhm.. if only nobody deleted the messages
manually..)

I tried to search if these messages are cached anywhere on search
servers (such as Yahoo, Google, Yandex and others) - but all I could
pick up is just a message list :( (from #2301 to #2404 - these are
from 4/11/2003 till 6/8/2003) The message list URL is:
http://www.google.com/search?
q=cache:NP1FJhFJto8J:groups.yahoo.com/group/maxmirnyi/messages/2301%
3Fviscount%3D100++site:yahoo.com+maxmirnyi4&hl=ru&ie=UTF-8

Yes, at least one Max's message is there (I saw it's #2314, from
4/18/2003), but when I tried to search the message *body* anywhere, I
failed.. :(

The thing is, that some messages can be cached in YOUR computers - I
mean, if you use your own, not public, computer to read groups.
Well.. what can I suggest? You can try to search _any_ files that
contain "maxmirnyi4" (it is about PC, I can't say much about Macs) -
maybe, if you are lucky, you'll find some important (i.e. Max's :) )
messages. If you use Windows 9x, they probably will be
in "C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files" (or something similar), if
Windows 2000/XP - in "C:\Documents and settings\(your_name)\Local
Settings\Temporary Internet files". Anyway, you can try to do
something.

Good luck to everyone, and especially to Max! :)

With best regards,
Oleg.

Pamela, thanks for your try. As you said it's a real shame and it's so
sad. But when it's done,it's done. It must be a bad accident. I don't
see anyone who want bad thing for this groupe. Let's hope Max posts
soon!
As for storage space when the space reached its full messages must
disappear from old ones and it's automatic(if I understand well). So
you don't need to do anything for that. But it's really...sigh:-(

Anyway,have a good day everyone!
and Max,all my positive powers to you. Be the beast to beat the
bigger guy!

bisous,

 Mizue

Here is the message from yahoo help: Note: Once you delete a message,
it can't be restored.

Someone decided to delete all of those messages, possibly to save
storage space? I don't know, but it is a real shame. A very real
shame. I know I did not do it and now I can do nothing about it. :-(
Messages 1941 to 2482 are evidently gone forever and there were posts
from Sweet Max there. We don't hear from him often enough and now
they are gone. This is really sad. Sorry everyone, but I didn't do
it.

Wishing Max a wonderful match against Ivo Friday and M&M a great
match tomorrow. Hugs to all,

Pamela

Go M&M!! Wow, do you realize that when Max plays Ivo that it might
just be the first time he is not the BIGGEST man on court? I hope
they broadcast it and Max, you are so in the zone. I think it will
be you vs. Roddick in the QFs. Go get 'em!

Mizue, did the posts that disappeared come back?

Hugs,

pamela

Now Max will play Ivo Karlovic, the big guy(2m08cm!) who beat Lleyton.
Go Max the bigger guy can't move as much as you can. Good luck!

Snoopy is dancing to-night! Spasibo, spasibo, spasibo to Max. Max,
this is huge for you and we are so happy for you! Great job by a
great guy. They are predicting that Max will meet Roddick in the
quarters and I have no doubt about it. Max, you can so beat Roddick
and make the semis. I can visualize you holding up the trophy for
the whole tourney. I really can and I think you can, too. :-)

Hugs to all

Pamela
