Thanks for pointing that out to me.  I think one of the other moderators put that up for me--I don't recall doing it.  Yes, the Friday after Thanksgiving is a no-go.

Important notice everyone;

I got a call from the church this morning--there has been a death in
the church and for that reason, we will not be able to use the hall.
I believe they need the space for a reception. At any rate, no
fencing this Friday, see you next week.

Hey guys. Sorry, but due to personal reasons, I will not be able to

should be there, and as such, should be able to supervise your
practice. Try not to burn the place down!

Just a quick reminder that veteran practice will be starting soon.
First meeting will be May 4th. If there are any questions you wish to
direct my way, it will have to wait until then because I will be out
of town for about ten days. See you then.

Hello everyone;

Couple of notes for the end of the trimester. First, obviously the
trimester is over--we had our last meeting last Friday. I will not be
at fencing until May 4th. At that time, we will have (tentatively)
three months of review practice with the veterans. I typically do not
want to teach new students in the summer so I can focus a little more
on the current students. I might have one new student--he & I are
currently discussing this idea. At any rate, hopefully I will have
personal one-on-one time with folks.

I say this at tentatively because New Providence tells me that they
will be starting new construction sometime in the summer. Obviously
this will affect our schedule if we stay at New Providence. I say if,
because hopefully you guys will seriously consider my proposal about
y'all creating a sanctioned club and possibly finding a better place
to meet. At any rate, a point to consider.

Some of you have asked about having the facilities for the month of
April. I've asked New Providence and they have two Fridays open, the
13th and the 27th. They want responsible adults to be there so I hope
Mrs. Smith and or Mr. Luna will be able to be there to supervise. If
not, I'd suggest y'all not meet.

Now, for folks who were not at our last meeting, we had a little
excitement. While practicing sabre with a veteran fencer, my blade
snapped and the fragment went sailing over the spectators. For this
reason, I'm going to implement a new policy that parents will have to
sit next to the far wall to limit the same thing happening again. In
addition, I'd like to remind everyone that things like this, while
rare, do happen. Finally, having a sanctioned club would include an
accidental insurance policy that would cover liability should
something like this happen again.

What else? The West Knox fencers would like to host a tournament
sometime in the summer. I am shooting for a June tournament. I will
post more when I have it.

Lastly, if anyone is receiving these emails and wishes not to,
contact me with the email you wish to have removed from the list.

Subject: John Farmer presentation this Friday
blackjackjeff13

Send Email Send Email

Well, as many of you know John Farmer actually came out this past
Friday and hopefully y'all had a good talk with him about various
things. One I'd like to point out and discuss is the notion of
registering to become a USFA club. Lots of good points made
there--the club carrying accidental insurance provided by USFA, the
owner of the facilities being covered by said insurance is also a
bonus. Being sanctioned by USFA gives you a sense of legitimacy with
fencers in general, plus the fact that once you start running
tournaments, they can now be sanctioned, thereby allowing folks to be
ranked and rated. (always a good thing)

However, let's look at the less obvious benefits. Several of the vets
have been somewhat complaining of "Well, we know how to fence, now
what?" Well, this could be the start of providing direction for you.
What do you want out of this club? Lots of tournaments? Become the
best fencer possible so that you can potentially go to the Junior
Olympics, maybe even the real Olympics? Use this as a means for a
college scholarship at some of the bigger universities? See, a whole
bunch of doors just opened up. If we manage to start up this club, we
get our foot in the door for other possibilities. John has already
mentioned he liked to set up a Blount County club already--we have one
just begging to be set up. Bring in John and we have an even greater
access possiblities--he's just recently sent one student to JOs this
past year. He's going for accreditation for refereeing and coaching.
I know he is much better at training and discipline than I am--best I
could call my coaching is "hillbilly fencing."

Furthermore, we have students that are just now starting to think
about college. Having a blurb of "helped create a nationally
sanctioned fencing club" probably sounds a lot better than "took
fencing lessons for a year." Here's a good way to beef up that
college enrollment application with something significant.

Finally, as John & I discussed after class, we have potentially three
clubs in the area that are trying to set up--one at Maryville College,
one possibly at Maryville High School, and one possibly at large (this
one). Rather than have the effort of three clubs trying
simultaneously, there is the possibility of setting up one large club
for all three groups, sort of a 'pooling of resources' as it may be.
Then once this one group gets firmly established, smaller sects of the
group--the high school group, the college group, maybe even a separate
YMCA group or something--could splinter off and their own entity. The
nice thing is this way, these smaller clubs would have the benefit of
the parent club helping them with the establishment of their own groups.

I see a lot of potential for this, but it is going to need a lot of
group effort for it to get off the ground, and as John pointed out to
me, it is going to take a huge effort from the parents to succeed.
However, I think you folks could pull it off, and I really like for
you to do this, so think about it. Some have mentioned that if this
goes through, I may leave for greener pastures. That's not going to
happen--I'll still be around to teach the newbies as it is right now.
All that really changes is it will then become your club, not mine,
and that's a good thing. Right now, should I have to stop lessons,
the Blount County Fencing Club ceases to exist. With your own vested
interest, should I have to stop coming, you have the potential of
sustaining yourselves either by bringing in another coach, or
bootstrapping one of the better students into becoming the coach.

So, the ball's in your court. Run with it.

Hello, folks;

Finally got a message from John Farmer. Long story short, he's been
very busy and couldn't contact me before now.

He and his son are having a little trouble with starting the Maryville
College fencing club, but he is interested in meeting the Blount Co.
fencers. So, I have invited him to meet the students and parents this
week; hopefully he'll attend. From the sounds of it, he interested in
pushing forth a fencing club in the Blount County area and would like
to discuss this idea with interested folks. I believe the students
who are attempting to establish a high school club would gain a wealth
of knowledge from John's experience.

I will also post this to my list of Blount Co. fencers email list in
case you're wondering why you're seeing this twice. It is my hope
more folks will sign up to this forum and I can eventually retire the
email list I have. For folks not on the Yahoo list, check here to
