Dear Friends and Students,

This is a reminder that the Paddy Crean workshop is at the end of this month. It is still possible to register.  The Canadian dollar is down so the exchange rate is favorable. Currently the rate for a single accommodations is $1100 US and for double accommodations it is $960 US.  See details below. The Flights are also cheaper.  So overall the workshop is quite affordable.   For those of you who are interested there is also the possibility of signing up for private lessons. The organizers will also be loosely structuring events like site seeing excursions, ice skating, skiing, etc.  After all the town of Banff is a winter resort.  Also there are plans for a New Years Celebration.

This is the last push for registration as there are already 160 people registered.  If you do decide to register please don't forget on there will be a question (how did you hear about this workshop) please write from the Martinez Academy.

Best wishes for the Holidays,

Martinez Academy of Arms

Spanish Martial Arts Weekend
May 25th - 27th, 2007
New York City, NY

Martinez Academy of Arms and its guest Raven Arts Institute are pleased to host the second 3 day Spanish Martial Arts Weekend. This will be the most extensive look at Spanish bladed martial culture at any workshop/seminar to date.

At the end of the 16th century, Don Jerónimo de Carranza created a system of fencing that was to influence the Spanish martial arts through his lifetime and well into the end of the 19th century. Carranza's core doctrine of the "True Art and Science of Arms" being a new and general reformation of fencing, as it existed during his time, and his new approach to the application of fencing theory was accepted by generations of Spanish Fencing Masters. This core doctrine remained nearly unchanged for 300 years. The techniques and methods for applying this doctrine varied considerably as successive generations of Spanish "Diestros" adapted the system to suit their needs, according to the conditions of their time and place. This seminar will demonstrate a continuum of the theory and how it was applied or incorporated into the use of other types of weapons. The main focus will be the technical choices, organization and the pedagogic rational of how La Verdadera Destreza has been reconstructed, resurrected and taught at the Martinez Academy of Arms. To fully explicate how these choices were made we will trace the tenants of Carranza’s doctrine through an examination of selected Spanish fencing treatises.

Hello,

Redwood Rapier Camp
June 17th - 23rd, 2007

The Martinez Academy of Arms and the Humboldt State University
Fencing Club are proud to announce the fifth year of the world’s only
week long camp for serious students of historical rapier fencing! As
always, this camp will serve as an introduction to the art for those
with no previous fencing experience, in a safe and friendly learning
environment. Anyone wanting a solid foundation for the study and
practice of this demanding art should not miss this unique opportunity.

This camp also remains the best opportunity for experienced rapier
fencers to hone their skills and improve their understanding of the
concepts, techniques, tactics and theory of either the Italian or
Spanish systems of 17th century rapier fencing. Any experienced
student or instructor of rapier fencing cannot afford to miss this
week of intensive training.

From June 17th through the 23rd, Maestro Ramon Martinez
and Maestro Jeannette Acosta Martinez will teach participants in
amongst the Victorian architecture of the little town of Arcata
situated in the redwood forests of Northern California. There will be
hands-on training from Monday through Friday, plus lectures and
question-and-answer sessions after dinner each evening. Participants
will attend lectures on a number of topics related to rapier fencing,
including:
* Fundamental fencing concepts and terminology
* Application of theory to the weapons combination of
rapier and dagger
* Characteristics of the rapier, and how to identify a
properly constructed weapon
* Tactics and the psychology of combat
* The strategy of facing fencers practicing other styles

Two levels of instruction will be running concurrently.
Martinez Academy of Arms Instructors Antone Blair and Jared Kirby
will be teaching Level I. Level I will serve as an introduction to
the art for those with little or no previous fencing experience.
Level II will be tailored to experienced rapier fencer. The focus of
this years training will be rapier and dagger.
We are once again offering an optional sixth day of training tips
and reinforcement of fundamental concepts.

Early registration includes a discount on the price but you must
register by April 17th. Class size is limited, so be sure to register
early! For more information on costs, housing, travel and
registration please go to: http://www.martinez-destreza.com/redwood2007/

Dear Friends,

The Paddy Crean workshop is fast approaching. It looks like it will be one of the biggest yet. The workshop is making it's final push for registration.  While the Banff site says that the registration deadline is the  1st of December, it is still possible to register.

Due to scheduling problems with other commitments, Maestro Martinez will not be teaching at the workshop.

The Paddy Crean has a very different organization set up.  The schedule of classes is the last thing they work on.  For those of us who are used to seeing classes listed and choosing to attend the event based on those classes, this workshop can seem unorganized.  Let me reassure you that the Paddy Crean workshops I have attend in the past have all been run very professionally, this years workshop is no exception.  The schedule will be up in the next week or so.

I will be there teaching.  I will be teaching two progressive classes ( classes that build on the previous class), extended class ( 3 to 4 hrs) and a master class (1 1/2 hrs to 2 hrs).

La Verdadera Destreza:  Spanish Rapier and Dagger (Progressive class)

The art of rapier and dagger within La Verdadera Destreza is vastly different from single rapier. In this weapons combination the elements of time, movement and space radically change the nature of the interplay. Coordinated footwork and balance become even more critical because of the increased variety possible with the combination of weapons, as either can be used offensively or defensively.  This progressive class will introduce the student to the complex art of Spanish rapier and dagger.  The focus will be on understanding how to manipulating time and distance to put the swordsman in the best position to attack or defend.

Italian Rapier and Dagger (Progressive class)

The focus of this class will be on the variety of the placement of the sword and dagger depending on the offensive or defensive nature of the interplay.

Extended Class on the French school of Small Sword

The students will go through the fundamental concepts of the French school of small sword. This will cover guard positions, footwork, hand positions, parries, and the concept of opposition.

Master class on street fighting techniques with the Small Sword.

This class will focus on the techniques possible that can be employed in street fighting; such as disarms, jamming and take downs.

I will also be available for private lessons with students.  If you have interest in that please contact me directly so I can schedule you in.

Sincerely,
Jeannette

Martinez Academy of Arms and its guest Raven Arts Institute are
pleased to host a 3 day Spanish Martial Arts Weekend. Maestros Ram=F3n
Martinez, Jeannette Acosta-Martinez and James Loregia will be teaching
classes on rapier, small sword, sabre, walking stick, and navaja.=20=20

Spanish bladed martial arts are unique cultural artifacts that
incorporate social, philosophical, and aesthetic values of Spanish
culture. Beginning with the golden age and proceeding through to the
beginning of the 20th century we will follow a progression that will
demonstrate how these weapons were used in methods that are unique to
Spain.=20

At the end of the 16th century Don Jeronimo de Carranza created a
system of fencing that was to influence the Spanish martial arts
through his lifetime and well into the 19th century. This series of
classes will demonstrate a continuum of the theory created by Carranza
and how it was applied or incorporated into the use of other types of
weapons.

The weekend will begin with Carranza's unique system, La Verdadera
Destreza and its application with single rapier. Students will learn
the movimientos, compases, and llave y gobierno, which are the
hallmarks of the system.=20

The Spanish smallsword (espadin) unlike its French counterpart is a
rapier of reduced size in that it retained and utilized all of the
elements of the rapier hilt and blade. The blade length was greatly
diminished yet still retained the typical geometry of a Spanish rapier
blade; being double edged as the diestros continued to use cutting
techniques. The system for the use of this weapon incorporated many
French and Italian techniques upon the foundation that was laid down
by Carranza in the end of the 16th century. In this class the students
will learn the technical application of this lighter and shorter
weapon as a direct continuum of Spanish rapier theory.=20=20=20

The Spanish fencing masters of the 19th century saw the saber as a
direct descendant of what they termed the espada antigua (older
sword). The use of the saber retains some of the circular elements,
angulos, some of the movimientos, and cuts as used by Carranza.=20

This weekend will also include a comprehensive class on the use of the
walking stick or bast=F3n de paseo. Two distinctive approaches to the
use of the walking stick will be taught. One style is completely
founded upon sabre fencing that includes Spanish, French and Italian
methods. The other style is based entirely upon Spanish systems of
stick combat.=20

The weekend will conclude with an introduction to the Navaja, the
Spanish folding clasp knife, which was used in Spain and the
Mediterranean from the 16th century to the present day. Covering not
only the technical aspects of its use, it will also introduce the
students to several of the various regional styles.=20=20

training daily, with an emphasis on proper technique, self-control, and safety.

The following will be covered:
-- The characteristics of the weapon, and how to select a proper rapier

rapier, and how they relate to practice and application
-- Time, measure and proportion
-- Training methods

their skills. Sunday will be devoted exclusively to advanced techniques and
tactical considerations.

Posted on behalf of Jared Kirby:

The Capo Ferro Translation Project is happy to announce the completion of
the translation of "Gran Simulacro dell'arte e dell'uso della scherma". It
will be published by Greenhill Books as "Italian Rapier Combat" and will be
available in Feb/March of 2004! This book will include the first complete,
professional translation of Capo Ferro's treatise, his 43 plates and a
complete glossary of his fencing terms compiled by Maestri Ramon Martinez
and Jeannette Acosta-Martinez.

For more information, excerpts from the book and to PRE-ORDER your copy of
the book go to http://www.martinez-destreza.com/capoferro.htm. All
pre-ordered copies through this link will also be signed!

For those that are not familiar with the Capo Ferro Translation project, it
was started in the spring of 2000 to help raise funds for professional
translations of historical fencing treatise, starting with Capo Ferro's
great work. The profits from "Italian Rapier Combat" will help to pay for
future translations in order to unlock the knowledge of historical fencing
masters to the English speaking world. This project could never have
succeeded without the support of the following patrons, who I am forever
indebted to for their generous donations:

One of the world's best-known professional teachers of traditional fencing,
Maestro Ramon Martinez is internationally recognized as the foremost
authority on La Verdadera Destreza, the Spanish school of rapier fence. For
several years, many interested parties have contacted Maestro Martinez,
seeking information about this fascinating, but much-misunderstood, martial
art. Now, in association with Palpable Hit Productions, the Martinez
Academy of Arms is pleased to announce the release of "La Verdadera
Destreza, the True Art and Skill of Spanish Swordsmanship," a basic
introductory video course on Spanish rapier fencing.

The fruit of almost a quarter-century of research and practical experience,
these two one-hour videos present fundamental techniques in a simple form
comprehensible to the modern swordsman training without a master, and
reveal to the public, for first time, the truth behind the erroneously
termed "Magic Circle" in an easy, step-by-step manner. "The True Art and
Skill" demonstrates the applied geometry on which the Spanish school is
founded, the wisdom found within the treatises of Spanish masters Don
Jeronimo Sanchez de Carranza and Don Luis Pacheco de Narvaez.

The contents of Volume 1 include instruction and drills covering:

· Weapon and Blade Selection
· Proper Grip
· Positions of the Hand
· Proper Stance
· Footwork
· Blade Actions and Oppositions
· Developing Sensitivity
· Building Your Own Circle

Building upon the foundation of skills presented in Volume 1, contents of
Volume 2 include instruction and drills covering:

· Movemientos
· Cuts
· Thrusts
· Defensive Blade Actions
· Dagger Selection and Grip
· Attack and Defense with Rapier and Dagger

If ordered by June 15, Volume 1 and Volume 2 are available for only $34.95
per volume or $59.95 for the whole set. After June 15, prices increase to
$69.95 for the set. (All prices are U.S. dollars and do not include
