Gonzalez or no Gonzalez?   Message List

Re: [marlins] Gonzalez or no Gonzalez?

I have very mixed emotions about Alex! NO DOUBT he is a great fielder! BUT so many times I'm frustrated when he comes to bat with a chance to contribute and he STRIKES out on a pitch completely OUT of the strike zone or one that is in the dirt! there are times that he can be a good hitter such as LAST YEAR when he was hitting well! then after the All-star break he went bad again! I do not know what or why he swings at so MANY OBVIOUSLY BAD PITCHES!! =-O :-( :-[
I just wonder if he just needs glasses and is too PROUD to wear them??

he has sure WON a few game with his hitting, like in the World Series in a critical game! But! I think he has LOST VERY many games by NOT producing when runners on base and the game on the line! too many times I've seen rallys SNUFFED OUT by him striking out with a pitch in the DIRT! I don't mind a player losing his at bat to the pitcher when the pitch is GOOD! that's baseball!

as to your question, I do not know the answer. perhaps someone needs to analyze his efficiency somehow! There are many reasons to keep in him in the lineup  because of his fielding and the ability to work with Louis. They are a great DP Combination!!

It's fairly clear that Alex Gonzalez is a regular in the Marlins'
starting lineup because of his glove.  He's batting .195 this season
with an on-base percentage of .220.  What saves him is his play in the
field.  His range and ability at shortstop have saved more than a few
runs.  I'm not much of a stat-head, so my question to the group is:
Does Alex Gonzalez prevent more runs in the field than he costs at the
plate?

AND how much patience will Jack McKeon have with him?   The Marlins'
can't ignore his defense, but how long can they look past his dismal
hitting?
