Kane County Cougars at Lansing Lugnuts
Thursday, August 22nd, 2002
Oldsmolbile Park, Lansing, Michigan

The Cougars finally made it easier on themselves by
getting out to a lead a holding it, this time they won
by five runs. Lansing only scored in one inning which
is an improvement for the Cougars because they only
allowed two runs. This is the Cougars seventh win in a
row and it pulled them into a tie with Burlington for
the wild card.

Phil Akens pitched very well and only got into trouble
in that one inning. He went eight innings only giving
up four hits and the two runs. The impressive things
were that he didn't walk anyone and he struck out ten.
Akens started out the game very well. He struck out
the side in the first inning. Phil would end up with a
season high ten strike outs.

The Cougars offense struck early and often. In the
first inning one of the two new Cougars, Eric Reed who
had just come from Jamestown yesterday, he singled to
left on the first pitch he saw. Reed would get to
second on a passed ball. Kris Clute moved him along to
third with a sacrifice bunt. Reed would come home on a
wild pitch for the first run of the ballgame. Michael
Tucker and Winton Zapey both struck out, which would
end the inning.

Reed would get two hits and score twice. He also put
down a sacrifice bunt in the third. His second single
was a bunt. Clute had two sac bunts and one walk. He
also scored once.

The third inning would see the Cougars come out and
score three times. William Arroyo walked to led off
the inning. Jason Helps singled to right. Reed put
down his sac bunt to move over the runners. Clute then
walked to load the bases with only one out. Tucker
then walked, which brought home Arroyo. Zapey struck
out for the second out. Scott Hicks singled to right.
On the play Helps and Clute would score. Phil Hartig
grounded out to first to end the inning. Hartig just
came up with Reed from Jamestown yesterday.

Jae Kuk Ryu started for the Lugnuts and lasted four
innings. He gave up four hits and four runs. Only
three of those were earned. He also walked three and
struck out four.

Akens got into trouble in the fifth inning. With one
out Buck Coats singled to left. Corey Slavik then hit
a homer to right. This was his fourth of the year and
his first since May. Akens would settle down and get
Warren Hanna to ground out to second. Joey Monahan
struck out to end the inning.

The Lugnuts brought in Matt Hines to replace Ryu in
the fifth. Hines would get the side in order. In the
sixth the Cougars would score again. With one out,
Hartig singled to right, he would get to second on a
passed ball. Franco Blackburn grounded out to first,
to move Hartig to third. Arroyo singled to center to
score Hartig. Arroyo would get caught stealing later
to end the inning.

Akens got into a little trouble in the sixth. Ryan
Theriot led off with a single to left. He would steal
second. Aaron Weston then grounded out to first,
Theriot would move to third, with only one out. Brad
Bouris popped up foul to third for the second out.
Yban Esterlin popped up to right to end the inning.

After the Cougars got one run off of Lugnut reliever
Hines in the sixth Lansing brought in another pitcher.
Thomas Hatley would make his first league appearance.
Jason Helps led off the inning by reaching on an error
by second baseman Weston. Reed then put down a bunt
and beat it out. Clute put down another sac bunt to
move the runners over. Tucker then doubled down the
line to left, on the play the ball bounced over the
head of the third baseman Slavik. Helps and Reed would
score. Zapey grounded out to short. Hicks would walk.
Hartig then grounded out to second to end the inning.

The Lugnuts had one more rally attempt left in them
and this time it wasn't in the bottom of the ninth. In
the eight Hanna led off with a double to left. Joey
Monahan grounded out to short, on the play Rundgren
made a nice grab. Theriot would get Hanna to third by
grounding out to second for the second out. Weston
popped up to short for the last out of the inning.

More Notes
I will be in Lansing tomorrow for the game, and I'll
be in Michigan this weekend, so there will be no
reviews till Tuesday, because I will have to miss the
home games on Saturday, Sunday and Monday against
Beloit. So everyone, do me a favor and make some
Turtle Soup for me, thanks
