Kane County Cougars at Clinton Lumberkings
Monday, July 29th, 2002
Riverview Stadium, Clinton, Iowa

A bases loaded walk allowed by the Cougars costs them
the game in the tenth inning. The Cougars had plenty
of chances to win but they just couldn't get the hit
when needed. Eventhough Jason Stokes hit his 24th
homer of the year to set the new single season Cougars
record.

The Cougars did come back in the game from a 4-1
deficit to tie the game and force extra frames. They
scored three runs in both the seventh and ninth.

Brad Farizo made the start for the Cougars. This was
only his fourth game since having "Tommy John" surgery
last year, his first Cougars game. Brad went five
innings, giving up nine hits and three runs. He struck
out two and walked one. He gave up all of his runs in
the first inning. His last inning was his only three
up, three down inning.

In the first inning Brett Boyer led it off with a
single to left. Greg Thissen then singled to left.
Boyer went to second, he would get to third on a wild
pitch. Josh Labandeira hit a fly to center, Boyer
would tag up and score on the play. Clyde Williams
singled to center to get Thissen to third. Jovanny
Sosa singled to right to score Thissen, and get
Williams to third.. Dominick Ambrosini walked. Felix
Diaz hit a liner to center, on the play William tagged
up and scored. The inning would finally end with
Anthony Ambrosini grounding out to short.

Farizo did a nice job after that inning, in each of
the next three inning the ledoff man would get to near
third. In the second inning with one out Boyer singled
to left. Greg Thissen grounded out to short, Boyer to
second. Labandeira grounded one to the left side, the
ball hit the runner Boyer and the inning would be
over. William led off the third inning with a single
to center. Sosa then singled to right. Dominick
Ambrosini would reach on a fielder's choice, on the
play Sosa would be out and Williams would get to
third. Felix Diaz struck out. Anthony Ambrosini lined
out to center to end the inning. In the fourth inning
with one out Boyer doubled to left, then went to third
on a wild pitch. Thissen flied out to left. Labandeira
struck out to end the inning.

The Cougars offense would put together one run in the
second inning. Michael Tucker led off wiht a walk.
Scott Hicks struck out. Angel Molina then walked. Both
runners would move up a base on a passed ball. Rex
Rundgren then flied to left. The left fielder Dominick
Ambrosini caught the ball at the wall. On the play
Tucker would tag up and score.

Kane County had their chances early on after scoring
the one run in the second. In the third inning Charles
Frazier led off with a single, then stole second base.
Kris Clute and Jason Stokes both struck out. Tucker
grounded out to short. In the fourth Hicks would led
off with a single to left. Molina grounded out to
short. William Arroyo was hit by a pitch. Rundgren
popped out to second. Anthony Brewer struck out.

In the seventh inning the Cougars would take the lead
with three runs. With one out Brewer walked. Franco
Blackburn pitch hit for Frazier and put down a
sacrifice bunt to move Brewer to second. Clute walked.
The Kings then brought in a new pitcher because I
don't think they wanted to really face who wa on deck.
Eric Charron replaced Rob Caputo on the mound. Stokes
came up and cracked his 24th homer of the year. It was
a three run shot to left on the first pitch.

Clinton did come back to tie the game in the bottom of
the inning. With two outs Labandeira walked. Williams
then doubled off the top of the wall to right to score
Labandeira. Williams would get greedy and try for
three. He wold be out after a rundown.

Nic Ungs pitched two innings after replacing Farizo.
He did not fair very well. He gave up five hits and
four runs. In the eighth inning the Kings took the
lead again with three runs of their own. Jovanny Sosa
led things off with a double to left. Craig Kerner
pitch ran for Sosa. Dominick Ambrosini reached on a
bunt single to second, Kerner went to third. Dominick
Ambrosini would steal second. Felix Diaz then tripled
to right, on the play Kerner and Ambrosini would
score. The Cougars would make a pitching change and
bring in Eddie Russell. Russell struck out Anthony
Ambrosini for the first out. Matt Swope them would
reach on an error by short stop Rundgren, then ball
went through his legs. Diaz would score. The inning
would end with Boyer flying to left. Eddie Russell
would be the only Cougars pitcher not to give up any
runs in this game.

The Cougars would tie the game in the top of the ninth
with three runs. Rundgren and Brewer both walked, to
start the inning off. Blackburn and Clute then both
struck out. Jason Stokes doubled to right to score
Blackburn. Tucker doubled to left to score both Brewer
and Stokes.

In the top of the tenth the Cougars would have a
chance to take the lead. Angel Molina led off with a
single to right. The throw into the pitcher went down
the line, and Molina would get to second. Arroyo and
Rundgren both struck out. Molina went to third on a
wild pitch. Brewer grounded out to second to end the
inning.

Lincoln Holdzkom came in and got the final two outs of
the ninth and would pitch the tenth. Dominick Amrosini
grounded out to second to led off the inning. Felix
Diaz walked. Anthony Ambrosini singled to right. Both
runners would move up on a wild pitch. Matt Swope
would be intentionally walked to load the bases with
one out. Holdzkom then lost the plate on his radar
screen. Brett Boyer then walked, Diaz would score to
win the game.
