Beloit Snappers at Kane County Cougars
Wednesday, July 10th, 2002
Phillip B. Elfstrom Stadium, Geneva, Illinios
Hey, Maybe The Cougars Have Turned The Corner
Offensivley!......
The Cougars pounded out 12 hits against the Snappers
tonight, and with Dontrelle Willis pitching thats a
win. Eventhough most of the runs for the Cougars
occured because they got the Snappers to throw the
ball around a lot, and hey they made three errors in
the game.
Dontrelle Willis got his tenth win of the season today
and pitched extremely well. He went eight innings,
giving up five hits and one runs. He did not walk
anyone, but hit three Snappers. He struck out four.
The last time Willis faced the Snappers at the Elf was
the combied no-hitter in May.
Willis only got into trouble twice in the game, the
first time was in the second inning. Brad Nelson led
off by getting beaned by a pitch. Dan Boyd then
singled to right. Tom Carrow struck out. Willis then
got Hector Garcia to ground into the inning ending
double play. To preserve what at that time was a one
to nothing lead.
The only other time the Snappers gave Willis any
trouble was in the fourth inning when they actually
scored a run against him. With two outs Brad Nelson
came up and singled to center then stole second base.
Dan Boyd was hit by a pitch. Now is when thing got
interesting. Tom Carrow singled to left. Leftfielder
Scott Hicks threw home, the throw got to catcher Angel
Molina in time. Nelson slammed into Molina and the
ball came loose. Willis was backing up the play and
got the ball and threw to second. Carrow had rounded
first to far, and shortstop Rundgren got the ball and
ran him back towards first. He saw that Boyd was going
to try to score and threw home and Carrow was out to
end the inning.
Phil Akens came in for an inning of work in the ninth
with the Cougars up by eight runs to try to get his
confidence up. He gave up a hit and hit a man.
The Milwaukee Brewers first round pick from last years
draft, Mike Jones started for the Snappers. He lasted
into the fourth inning but did not have one of his
better days. Dane Artman then came in for relief,
another highly touted prospect, he fared a little
better. The Jon Steitz came in to close out the final
two innings for the Snappers and he got shelled.
Charles Frazier had two hits and scored a run, plus
stole another base. Kris Clute had two hits and drove
home three runs. Angel Molina hit his first homer and
scored three runs. Rex Rundgren is heating up, he had
three hits. Anthony Brewer only had one hit, but he
walked three times, and scored twice.
The Cougars could've won the game in a bigger way than
they did, they had an opportunity to score at least
one run in every inning. They left 14 runners on base,
12 of them in the first six innings.
In the first inning, Charles Frazier walked, then was
caught trying to steal secon. Kris Clute struck out.
Jason Stokes singled to left. Scott Hicks walked.
Michael Tucker then struck out to end the inning.
The Cougars would score in the second inning. Dan
Ortiz walked. Angel Molina flied one to right. Ortiz
thought it was going to be caught but it wasn't and
Ortiz was out at second. Rex Rundgren singled to
center. Anthony Brewer struck out. Charles Frazier
singled to center to score Molina.
In the fourth inning the Cougars put a couple of more
runs on the board. With one out Rundgren singled to
left, then got to second on a wild pitch by Jones.
Brewer walked. Frazier singled to right to load the
bases. Kris Clute then singled to right to score both
Rundgren and Brewer. The Snappers then brought in Dan
Artman to pitch. On Artman's first pitch Frazier and
Clute, were both safe with a double steal. That led to
the Snappers intentionally walking Stokes. Artman then
reared back and struck out both Hicks and Tucker to
end the inning.
The big inning for the Cougars was the seventh. Molina
led off with an infield single to second. Rundgren
then put down a bunt. The pitcher Steitz picked it up
and threw it into centerfield. Anthony Brewer then
singled to center to score Molina. Frazier hit a liner
to first. The first baseman Nelson tried to pick it,
the ball went threw him for an error to load the
bases. Kris Clute was then hit by a pitch to bring
home Rundgren. Stokes popped up to second. Scott Hicks
doubled to left, to bring home all three runs. Hicks
had rounded the bag to nuch after the Snappers threw
home, and thier catcher threw the ball into
centerfield. The centerfielder bobbled the ball and
that allowed Hicks to get to third on the play.
The Cougars would score one more run, in the eighth
inning Molina led off with his first homer of the
season. The ball went onto the deck in left field. It
was his second professional home run.
