West Michigan Whitecaps at Kane County Cougars
Monday, July 8th, 2002
Phillip B. Elfstrom Stadium, Geneva, Illinios

Oh were, Oh were did this Cougars offensive exposion
come from, were was this offense hiding for the past
few games. Did they go into semi-hibernation or did
they take a vacation. Wherever they went, all I know
is that they showed up today in Geneva.

The Cougars got ten hits and scored eight runs. Most
of those runs were a result of the Whitecaps starter
Jason Moates and his extreme wildness. He hit four
Cougars in his two plus innings of work?. He also
walked four hitters. Eventhough only two of those
walks scored and no of the hitters that were hit
scored.

On the other hand Nic Ungs pitched very well for the
Cougars. Nic gave them six innings of good work. He
gave up six hits and two runs. Ungs did not walk
anyone and struck out five. Three of those strike outs
were the first three Caps he saw in the first innings,
on 14 pitches.

Kris Clute had two doubles and scored two runs in the
first two innings. After that he grounded out twice
and struck out once. Jason Stokes, fresh off playing
in the All Star Futures game was back. He had two hits
and score two runs, while driving in another. Michael
Tucker had two hits and one runs scored. Rex Rundgren
drove in three runs with a single.

The Cougars would take advantage of Moates' wildness
right away. With one out Kris Clute lined a double to
center. The ball bounced over the fense for a ground
rule double. Clute would then get to third on a wild
pitch. Jason Stokes walked. Scott Hicks singled to
right to bring home Clute. Stokes would get to third.
Hicks was then picked off of first, he got into enough
of a run down to allow Stokes to score. Michael Tucker
was then hit by a pitch. So was Daniel Ortiz. Dennis
Anderson then walked to load the bases. Rex Rundgren
lined out to center to end the inning.

The Caps would come back in the next half inning to
cut the lead in half. Juan Tejeda took one of Ungs'
pitches a deposited it onto the deck in left.

With two outs in the second Kris Clute doubled to
left. Jason Stokes then doubled down the line to left
to score Clute.

More of the wildness from Moates in the third. With
one out Daniel Ortiz walked. Dennis Anderson then
followed. Rex Rundgren was hit by a pitch to load the
bases. Anthony Brewer then got in the way of another
pitch, this allowed Ortiz to score. After that the
Caps brought in Trevor Leu , and he got the final two
outs of the inning.

The big inning for the Cougars was the fourth, where
they scored three runs. Jason Stokes led it off with a
single to right. He then got to second on a wild
pitch. Scott Hicks walked. Michael Tucker struck out.
Daniel Ortiz walked to load the bases. Dennis Anderson
then struck out. After he struck out he had some words
for the ump, more on Dennis later. Rex Rundgren then
hit one to center. The center fielder dove and missed
it. Stokes, Hick and Ortiz all scored. Meanwhile
Rundgren would only get a single since the left
fielder was right there.

After that inning both offenses would be quiet for an
inning. In the sixth inning the Caps scored again.
With two outs, Juan Tejeda singled to left. Don Kelly
then doubled hard off the right field wall to score
Tejeda.

In the bottom of the inning the Cougars would get the
run back. With one out Michael Tucker singled to
center. Daniel Ortiz singled to right. Dennis Anderson
singled to right to score Tucker.

The final two runs of the game would be from the West
Michigan side. In the eighth inning Juan Francia led
off with a walk. Chris Kolodzey then pitch hit for
Mike Scott and struck out. Jason Knoedler pitch hit
for David Mattle and walked. Juan Tejeda walked to
load the bases off of Cougars reliever Tim Schilling.
The Cougars then brought in their closer Lincoln
Holdzkom. Don Kelly doubled to left to bring in
Francia and Knoedler. Jason Kennedy then struck out
for the second out. Ryan Neil lined to center to end
the inning.

Ok now more on Anderson, in the bottom of the eight he
got ejected from the game. He ended the inning by
striking out. The ball was outside. He yelled at the
ump and got throw out. This is the second time in two
years he has been thrown out while arguing balls and
strikes with an ump. Last time was May 21st of last
year in Dayton.

Notes-When Moates was taken out of the game the music
guy, played them theme from Looney Tunes, which I
thought was appropriate.
