Kane County Cougars at South Bend Silver Hawks
Friday, July 5th, 2002
Stanley Covelski Regional Stadium, South Bend, Indiana

The Cougars bats came alive today as they pounded out
15 hits and 12 runs. A late inning grand slam from the
Hawks prevented the score from being more telling of
what the game was like.

Ronald Belizario started for the Cougars and pitched
well. He went seven strong innings. Belizario gave up
three hits and two runs. He walked two and struck out
three Hawks. Ronald retired the final 10 Hawks he
faced before being lifted after seven.

He did get out of a jam in the third inning when with
two outs Burnell Huntchinson singled to left, then
advance to second on a wild pitch. Scott Hairston
walked. Sean Leullwitz was hit by a pitch to load the
bases. Dan Callahan then grounded out to second to end
the inning.

The Cougars offense got on the board right away. With
one out in the first, Jason Helps singled to right.
Jason Stokes then hit one out of the stadium to left
field. It went over at least the first bunch of trees
outside the park. Scott Hicks walked. Michael Tucker
then doubled to left to score Hicks. Daniel Ortiz
would reach on a fielder's choice, on the play Tucker
would be out at third, as the shortstop got the ball
and threw to third base for the out. Angel Molina then
walked. William Arroyo grounded out to second to end
the inning.

Stokes hit his 18th homer of the season. At this point
his is one up on the homerun leader Jim Kavourias's
record of 23 for a season. Kavourias did not hit
another homer untill the 12 th of July.

Continuing the onslaught in the second inning the
Cougars scored another run. Anthony Brewer led off
with a single to second base. He then was caught
trying to steal second base. Charles Frazier singled
to center then stole second. Jason Helps grounded out
to the first baseman. On the play Frazier would move
to third. Jason Stokes then grounded one to third. The
only problem was the top half of the bat would travel
farther than the ball would. Stokes totally snapped
his bat while hitting, and the bat ended up in shallow
left field, while the ball was a grounder to third.
The third baseman must've seen the bat coming in his
general direction, he threw the ball way wide of first
for an error. Frazier would score on the play.

Not so fast now with the offense for the Cougars, the
Hawks would score two runs in the bottom of the inning
to cut the lead in half. With one out Dan Callahan
singled to third. Jay Garthwaite then would reach base
on a fielder's choice. Byran Loeb hit a homer to left
field.

More offense for the Cougars in the third. Daniel
Ortiz doubled to third. The ball went off of the glove
of the third baseman as he was trying to back hand the
ball and bounced just beyond the infield dirt, Ortiz
ended up on second. Angel Molina would then triple to
center to score Ortiz. William Arroyo then hit a fly
ball to center, Molina tagged up and scored on the
play.

With one out in the fourth, Jason Stokes would take a
walk. Scott Hicks then got him over to second on a
grounder to first. Michael Tucker singled to center to
score Stokes.

The runs just kept on coming for the Cougars. In the
fifth they would score again. This time with one out,
William Arroyo walked. The Hawks would then try to a
pitch out to catch Arroyo trying to steal. The catcher
stood up for the pitch out, but the pitcher threw the
ball down and in as if he was throwing another pitch.
On the wild pitch Arroyo would make it to second.
Charles Frazier then singled to center to score
Arroyo.

Jason Stokes led off the sixth inning by reaching on
an infield single to third. He would get to second on
a wild pitch. Scott Hicks would line out to left.
Michael Tucker singled to center, Stokes would stop at
third. Daniel Ortiz then reached on a fielder's
choice, with Tucker being the one that was out at
second. On the play Stokes would score.

This is getting crazy, this is just about one weeks
worth of offense in one night for this years Cougars
team. In the seventh inning Anthony Brewer led off by
reaching on an infield single, then getting to second
on a wild pitch. Charles Frazier would ground out to
short. Jason Helps reached on a fielder's choice, on
the play Brewer was out trying to go to third, on
another ball hit to that side of the field. Jason
Stokes singled to center to get Helps to second. Scott
Hicks singled to right to score Helps.

The one inning the Cougars did not score in was the
eighth. With two outs William Arroyo would walk, but
then Anthony Brewer struck out to end the inning.

With one out in the ninth Jason Helps would hit a fly
to left centerfield. The ball would drop between a
diving left fielder and the centerfielder. Helps would
be safe at first. Jason Stokes struck out. Scott Hicks
walked. Michael Tucker doubled to center to score both
Helps and Hicks.

After Belizario left the game the Cougars brought in
Tim Schilling to finish out the game. In the eighth
inning he allowed a walk, then got a grounder to end
the inning. In the ninth he wouldn't be so lucky.

Dan Callahan led off the ninth by hitting a grounder
to second. William Arroyo got to the ball. Callahan
beat the throw. The only problem was the throw was not
only late but wide. Callahan would get to second on
the error by Arroyo. Jay Garthwaite walked. Byran Loen
singled to center to load the bases. Dan Uggla struck
out. Rick Haydel blooped one over Arroyo's head at
second. Arroyo got to the ball but his throw was late.
On the play all the runners would advance one base.
Callahan would score. Jarred Ball the Hawks lead off
hitter then came up and hit a homer to left field to
bring everyone home. Schilling would keep his head
though, he got Burnell Hutchinson to ground out ot
first, Schilling made it over to get the throw from
Stokes to record the second out. Scott Hairston then
popped one way up to short for the final out.

Notes-I hate to say this but, this was the first time
I ever went to a game in South Bend, and the place was
more than half full. It was a fireworks night, and no
I didn't stay for the fireworks.
