Peoria Chiefs at Kane County Cougars
Thursday, July 4th, 2002
Happy 4th of July
Phillip B. Elfstrom Stadium, Geneva, Illinios

The Cougars offense came to life today, in support of
Dontrelle Willis. They scored eight runs on ten hits.
Willis pitched seven innings and gave up only a two
run homer to the Chiefs, he earned his ninth win of
the year.

Willis who came in with a league leading 1.42 earned
run average, and eight wins pitched well, again. In
the first three innings he faced the minumin nine
hitters. He did give up one hit, but the runner got
erased on a double play.

The Cougars offense clicked right away, they scored
four runs in the first inning. Charles Frazier led off
with a walk. Kris Clute then singled to right. Jason
Stokes hit one off of the pitcher, to allow for the
bases to be loaded. Scott Hicks popped one up to left.
Hicks got the job done though, and Frazier would score
to give the Cougars the lead. Clute would tag up and
make it to third. Michael Tucker lined one to right
for the second out. Daniel Ortiz singled to right to
score Clute. Dennis Anderson singled to right to score
Stokes. Rex Rundgren continued the trend by getting a
single to center to allow Ortiz to score. The inning
would end when Anthony Brewer lined out to right.

All of this offense would be off of Cheifs starter
Nick Planchich. Planichich ended up pitching into the
fifth inning. He did not fair to well though, giving
up eight hits and six runs. All six of those runs
would be earned. He also walked one and struck out
one. After the Cougars scored the four runs in the
first, he retired the ten of the next eleven in a row.

Kris Clute would lead off the fifth inning by getting
plunked in the back by a pitch. Clute then stole
second base. Jason Stokes doubled to left to score
Clute. Scott Hicks grounded out to first, on the play
Stokes made it over to third. Michael Tucker singled
to center to score Stokes and make it a six to nothing
lead for the Cougars.

Meanwhile Dontrelle Willis gave up two hits and one
walk in those innings. Willis also managed to strike
two Chiefs out.

In the sixth inning Dontrelle's shutout bid would be
over with one swat of the bat. With one out Jesse
Roman singled to left. Tim Lemon struck out. Gabe
Johnson then hit one in the deck in left field to put
the Chiefs on the board. That would be all the scoring
the Chiefs would be doing.

The Chiefs would have one more rally in them. In the
seventh inning. Yadier Molina led things off with a
walk. Jordan Robison then grounded into a double play,
Molina would be erased ont he play. Rick Asadoorian
then singled to right. Shaun Boyd hit one in the hole
by first. Second baseman Kris Clute made a nice play
out behind first base to just get to the ball. Clute's
throw almost went into the Cougars dugout. On the play
Asadoorian would get to third and Boyd would make
second. Jesse Roman lined out to left to end the
inning.

The Cougars would score two more runs in the seventh
for insurance. Kris Clute walked to lead things off.
Jason Stokes doubled to left to get Clute to third.
Scott Hicks struck out. Michael Tucker singled to
center, on the play Clute and Stokes would score.
Tucker would get to second on the throw. He might've
been able to get to third, if he hadn't hestitated
rounded first. The Chiefs then made a pitching change
and brought in Joel Barreto. Barreto struck out both
Daniel Ortiz and Dennis Anderson to get out of the
jam.

Kevin Cave came in to pitch the eighth inning, he
retired the side in order. Lincoln Holdzkom then came
on for the save and had no problems.

This Day In Cougars History

7/4/93, The Cougars play a wild game against the Quad
City River Bandits. THe game featured a near no-hitter
by Quad City starter Chuck Smith, who held the Cougars
without a hit untill Pookie Wilson's 8th inning
single:a bone jarring collison at home plate that left
Cougars star catcher Charles Johnson, lying at home
plate for nearly tem minutess: a game tying 9th inning
home run over the 400 foot mark in dead center by Todd
Pridy, and an extra inning victory coming on Tony
Sylvestri's single following Freddie Gambles triple.

7/4/01 Jim Kavourias hits homers number 16 and 17,
enroute to breaking the Cougars single season homer
run mark. Versus Burlington, he hits two homers
including a grand slam.

Andrew Prater, C (94) 30

Notes-For the second day in a row a season ticket
holder actually won something in a contest. Before
this week no season ticket holder had won something in
at least a year. Congrats go out to Bob for winning
the tickets to the futures game. Plus to Kevin for
winning the baseball bingo contest today.

Tomorrow's game review might not come to the next day
because I am hoping on being out in South Bend for the
game
