Peoria Chiefs at Kane County Cougars
Wednesday, July 3rd, 2002
Phillip B. Elfstrom Stadium, Geneva, Illinios

The Cougars had a chance to win this game in the
bottom of the ninth but, again the hitting went sour
on them. Michael Tucker led off the inning with a
dribbler past the pitcher. The pitcher tried to get
the ball. He fell off the mound then grabbed the ball
and tried to shovel the ball over to the first baseman
who was struggling to get back to the bag. The first
baseman got the ball in one hand then, as he tried to
turn around to see where the bag was, he dropped the
ball, Tucker was safe. The Chiefs then made a pitching
change. Dennis Anderson singled to left to get Tucker
over to second. It took Rex Rundgren four tries but he
finally got the bunt down - and then he almost beat
out the throw. With Tucker on third and Anderson on
second, the Cougars brought in Jason Helps to pitch
run for Anderson. George Arnott then popped one up
foul right behind the plate. The catcher caught the
ball for the second out. Charles Frazier then lined
one to center, the only problem was that the Chiefs
had him played well. Rick Asadoorian caught the ball
and ended the game. The Cougars let another one get
away: Peoria 5 - Cougars 3.

Peoria went out to the early lead in the game. In the
first inning, with one out against Cougars starter Nic
Ungs, Jesse Roman singled to third. On the play Ungs
knocked the ball down and it went over to third and
the throw to first was late. If Ungs hadn't knocked it
down Rundgren would've probly thrown him out. Tim
Lemon then doubled to left to score Roman. On the
play, Roman only scored because of the bobble of left
fielder Scott Hicks.

Nic Ungs started for the Cougars and just did not have
anything out there today. He lasted six innings but he
was going on fumes after about the fourth. Ungs gave
up eight hits and five runs. He even walked two and
struck out four.

The Chiefs would get to Ungs again in the second
inning. Jon Nelson led it off with a single to right.
Chase Voshell then lined one over to third. Tucker
caught it in self deffense. Yadier Molina grounded out
to Tucker. Rick Asadoorian then singled to left to
allow Nelson to score.

The big inning for the Chiefs would be the fourth.
That is when they scored three runs. Jon Nelson led it
off by reaching on an error by second baseman Kris
Clute. On the play the ball just went right between
Clutes legs. Chase Voshell followed with a double to
left right down the line. Yadier Molina then popped
out to third. Rick Asadoorian singled to center to
score Nelson. Shaun Boyd doubled to center to score
both Voshell and Asadoorian.

Ben Julianel started for the Chiefs and lasted into
the seventh inning. He gave up five hits and three
runs. He did a nice job to get out of some trouble. In
the third inning with two outs Charles Frazier singled
to center. Kris Clute then walked but Jason Stokes
popped one way up to center to end the inning. The
single by Frazier was the first hit the Cougars got on
the day

The Cougars would finally get to Julianel in the
fifth. Dennis Anderson led off the inning by hitting
his fourth homer of the season. The ball went to left
field. Rex Rundgren then tried to bunt to get on but
just couldn't beat the throw. Anthony Brewer reached
first on a dropped third strike/wild pitch combo.
Charles Frazier then popped one up behind the plate
foul. The catcher caught the ball. For some strange
reason Brewer was standing on second base, after the
catch. The catcher threw to first to get the double
play to end the inning.

The game would stay 5 to 1 for the next couple of
innings. In the sixth the Cougars had another good
chance to put up some runs against Julianel. With one
out Jason Stokes doubled to right. He then made it to
third on a wild pitch. Daniel Ortiz then grounded out
to third. Scott Hicks struck out to end the inning.

Michael Tucker led off the eighth innin with a his
fourth homer, this time it just made it over the fense
in right field. It went between the deck and the
fense. Dennis Anderson then struck out. Rex Rundgren
doubled down the line in left, just past then diving
third baseman. The Chiefs then made a pitching change
to bring in Jared Smith. Smith got George Arnott to
strike out. Charles Frazier then tripled to left to
score Rundgren. Kris Clute struck out to end the
inning.

Wes McCrotty then came in and pitched three great
innings, he gave up two hits and struck out two.

In the final couple of inning the Chiefs had a chance
to put the game away. Int he seventh with one out,
Jesse Roman hit a long drive to center. The ball went
over the fense. Only one problem for the Chiefs,
Charles Frazier caught the ball and brought it back
into play.

Ninth inning, Chase Voshell led off with a single to
left. Yadier Molina then lined out to left. Rick
Asadoorian singled to second. Shaun Boyd the lined out
to left. Leftfielder George Arnott made a nice play.
Jesse Roman then struck out.

This Day In Cougars History

7/3/92 Bobby Chouinard goes the full 7 innings
allowing only 1 earned run on 5 hits, but the Cougars
still drop the first game of the double header to the
Cedar Rapids Reds.

7/3/94 Numerous base running mistakes, wasted scoring
opportunities, and a key error come back to haunt the
Cougars, as they lose 2-1 to Quad City. Will Cunnane
allowing only 1 earned run in 7+ innings is the tough
luck loser.

7/3/95 12,256 fans watch the Cougars commit three
errors, leave nine men on base, issue five walks,
throw a wild pich, and allow 14 hits as they drop a
sloppy 12-8 contest to the Cedar Rapids Kernels.
