Peoria Chiefs at Kane County Cougars
Tuesday, July 2nd, 2002
Phillip B. Elfstrom Stadium, Geneva, Illinios

Sometimes the offense finds it's way through the fog.
Unlike yesterday when the Cougars were like the deer
in the headlights, they actually came back from being
down 2-0 and they won 5 to 2.

Scott Hicks had the big hit of the game to break a two
all tie in the bottom of the eighth to score Anthony
Brewer. Hicks had two hits today. George Arnott then
came up and drove the nail in the coffin for the
Cougars to give them a victory.

Aaron Russelburg started for the Chiefs and had a
no-no going for the first five innings. Russelburg
retired the side in order in the 1st, 3rd, 4th, and
5th innings.

In the second inning the Cougars actually got a couple
of runners on base against Russelburg. Scott Hicks led
it off by reaching on and error by second baseman
Shaun Boyd. On the play the ball just went between his
legs. George Arnott then hit into a double play.
Dennis Anderson walked, then stole second. Jason Helps
then struck out to end the inning.

The Cougars did have some success in the sixth inning
off of Russelburg. Rex Rundgren singled to left, then
stole second. Anthony Brewer struck out. Charlie
Frazier doubled to left to score Rundgren. Frazier
then stole third. Kris Clute hit a sacrifice liner to
right to allow Frazier to score. The Chiefs gave Jason
Stokes the unintentionally intentional walk. After
that the Chiefs took Russelburg out of the game and
brought in reliever Joe Rogers. Rogers would give up a
single to Scott Hicks to put runners on the corners
and two outs. George Arnott then struck out to end the
inning.

Jon Asahina got the start for the Cougars. He pitched
well in his five innings of work. The only thing that
got in the way of a great outing was a one out homer
in the fourth.

In the fourth inning with one out. Chris Duncan popped
one up foul to third. Third baseman Jason Helps lost
the ball in the sun, and somehow the ball landed just
fair. Gabe Johnson then hit one over the scoreboard in
left.

John Skinner then came in for the sixth inning.
Skinner continued his outstanding pitching this year
with three more shut out innings. John retired the
first seven in a row, then gave up what turned out to
be an infield single. Helps's throw from third was
wide. After that Skinner would close the door.

In the bottom of the eight the game was decided.
Anthony Brewer led off with a double to left. Charlie
Frazier struck out, after trying to lay down the bunt.
Kris Clute then struck out also. Jason Stokes was
intentionally walked. Scott Hicks singled to center to
score Brewer. The Chiefs pitcher Jared Blasdell then
tried the old fake to third throw to first play. He
went to third, then forgot about first. Hicks took off
and stole second. George Arnott then singled to left
to score both Stokes and Hicks.

This Day In Cougars History

7/2/93, Eddie Christain is the beneficiary of a bad
umpiring decision, as his long drive off of the
warning track in right center is ruled a home run, but
that's about all the Cougars would get as Chris Holt
pitches the Quad City River Bandits to a 7-2 win.

7/2/94, Glen Reeves has three hits and the game
winning RBI in the bottom of the 8th as the Cougars
come from behind to defeat Quad City 3-2. Bandits
starter Billy Wagner allows only one run in his six
innings of work.

7/2/95, Aaron Harvey has a homer, a single, two runs
and two runs batted in to lead the Cougars to a 8-2
win over the Rockford Cubbies.

7/2/98, After trailing 4-0, the Cougars come back with
two in the bottom of the ninth to edge the Beloit
Snappers 6-5.
