Peoria Chiefs at Kane County Cougars
April 9th, 2002
Phillip B. Elfstrom Stadium, Geneva, Illinios
Tyler Johnson went five strong innings for the Chiefs,
he gave up all of one hit. That one hit was a
questionable one at that. In the fifth inning Jason
Stokes lined one past the third baseman that, could
have been called an error. That would have preserved
the no-hitter, but that was not the case.
Johnson, struck out the first four Cougars he faced,
and five of the first six. In all he had nine
strikeouts in those five innings of work. He gave up a
walk to lead off the third inning to Juan Garcia.
Garcia was then caught stealing on what has to have
been a hit and run play. In the fifth he gave up that
one questionable hit to Stokes. After that he struck
out the next two hitters. After that he got Garcia to
pop up to center to end the inning.
Frailyn Tejada started for the Cougars at their home
opener, He pitched the first five innings, giving up
four hits. Frailyn gave up two runs, but only one of
those runs were earned. The one unearned run happend
because Jordan Robison reached on an error by third
baseman Juan Garcia. Tejada did not walk anybody, and
he also struck out two Chiefs.
Jon Asahina then came on in relief, and pitched two
innings. In those two innings he gave up one hit, and
one run. The one hit was a seventh inning leadoff
homerun to Gabe Johnson to put the Chiefs ahead 2-1.
The first hitter that Jon faced he hit.
For the Chiefs Richie Burgess and Joel Barreto came in
for an inning each of relied. Neither off them gave up
anything. Barreto did strikeout two hitter.
The top three hitters for the Cougars combined to go
0-9, with six strikeouts. They put hte ball into play
three times, and two of those were groundouts.
The middle of the order also had their troubles they
went, 1-7, with five strikeouts. They put the ball in
play twice, Stokes got htat one hit.
The bottom of the order didn't fare much better, they
went, 0-5, with a walk. They had the best afternoon
they at least put the ball in play all five times. One
of those times, Rundgren hit a liner to center. Garcia
also walked.
The scoring started in the first when with two outs,
Jordan Robison reached on an error by third baseman
Juan Garcia, Tim Lemon then doubled to left to score
Robison.
In the seventh Gabe Johnson hit a absoulute rope to
left that sailed over the left field deck, I wouldn't
be suprised to hear that a train rolled over the ball,
because I think it might've gotten all the way to the
tracks.

Well this is going to really be a long year if these
hitters don't figure out what a strike zone is.
Remember to vote on who you think will be the Cougars
2002 MVP
