Kane County Cougars at Burlington Bees
April 5th, 2002
Community Field, Burlington, Iowa

The Cougars are now back to square one on the new
season. This is after they lost the game today to the
Bees in the bottom of the ninth. After tieing the game
in the top of the inning. Two days in a row that the
Cougars have played one run games.

Phil Akens started for the Cougars, and pitched well.
He went five innings, giving up only two hits. While
walking one and striking out five. Phil retired the
first six men he faced, then walked the leadoff man
the next year. After that he retired the next two,
before giving up a bunt single to third.

This game was get, at least in the pitching since.
There was nine hits combined in the game and three
runs. Both of the starters gave up no runs and two
hits.

For the Bees, Brian Bass started for them, he played
for the Bees last year. Bass pitched seven innings,
giving up two hits and two walks, while striking out
two.

Jon Asahina came in after Akens and pitched two and
two thirds innings. He gave up one hit and three
walks, while striking out one. Jon got five of the
first six hitters he faced out.

The scoring started in the fifth when, with one out,
Jon Draper reached on an error by the second baseman
Kris Clute. On the play, Clute just missed the ball
and allowed the pop up to land in the infield.
Jonathan Guzman then singled to center to score
Draper.

The Cougars would tie the game in the top of the ninth
when, with one out Kris Clute doubled to right. Scott
Hicks then poped up to left. Jason Stokes, reached on
an error by the shortstop. On the play Clute made it
to third. Winton Zapay then reached on an infield
single to second, on the play Clute scored. The play
was close, but I do think that he was safe.

In the bottom of the ninth, Ruben Gotay doubled to
right, then he advanced to third on a wild pitch by
reliever Elvis DeJesus. DeJesus threw the ball way
over the catchers head. Jon Draper then singled to
left to bring home the winning run.
