Such a shame... just before he comes back to LA:
CHICAGO -- Chicago Cubs second baseman Mark Grudzielanek suffered a
broken right hand Saturday when he was hit by a pitch and will be out
two to four weeks.
Grudzielanek was hit by Arizona's Miguel Batista in the fifth inning.
He stayed in the game for that inning but was lifted for a defensive
replacement in the sixth.
Grudzielanek was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital for X-rays.
He has a fractured fifth metacarpal in his right hand and was placed
on the 15-day disabled list.
"It looked like it hit him more on the meat rather than his hand,"
Cubs manager Dusty Baker said after Saturday's game.
Grudzielanek, 33, was batting .305 for the season and was
hitting .300 (6-for-20) on this homestand. In 24 games since July 4,
he was batting .354 (35-for-99) with 11 doubles and 17 runs scored.
Augie Ojeda was recalled from Triple-A Iowa to take Grudzielanek's
spot on the roster. Ojeda was batting .236 in 97 games at Iowa, and
had started 20 games at second base.
I love this quote from Dusty: "He's been a super player for us, not
only offensively but defensively, too," Cubs manager Dusty Baker
said. "We were hoping it wasn't broken. I was praying last night. I
said 'Lord, please don't let it be broken.' But then I got the call
from our trainer."
