Re: [Mariners] An All-Star Game question

I was thinking about this the other day. Here's a scenerio for you.

Its tied at 5 in the 9th inning. The representetive of the Detroit
Tigers steps up to the plate and hammers a pitch to left. It clears
the left field wall and the AL celebrates a victory.

Just before the trading deadline, the Tigers, being the team building
wizards they are, trade the batter to the Dodgers for some pitching
that will fail anyway. At any rate, the player goes and plays for the
Dodgers who make the world series after an impressive post season run.

The man with the game winning home run for the AL now plays for the NL
champions. Is it fair that the AL gets home field?

The answer is of course, yes. After all 5 of the runs came from
players still in the AL. But it does make you wonder.

I don't think the All Star game should determine anything. This is a
patheic attempt from Bud Selig to prevent a tie like we had last year.
The stakes are raised. Its an exibition! Its a chance to see the
players play for fun.

What has to be the greatest part of all this is Fox's ad campaign. The
spots feature pitchers hitting or throwing very close to batters.
Thats what the All-Star game needs. A hit batsmen, players getting mad
at eachother. How bout a brawl? Tampa and Pittsburgh won't meet again,
I'm sure their reps to the all-star game have some unfinished
business.

Let the players play. As for who gets home field how about this
ingenious way of doing it, as seen by the NHL and NBA: the team with
the best record.

Honestly, lets say the M's do the whole 116-win thing again and this
time conquer everybody en route to the World Series. They face the
wildcard Astros for the championship. The Mariners have about 20,
maybe 25 more wins and yet the Series begins in Houston.

Lets not forget that M's management is miffed in case the series goes
5 or 7 games. That gate goes to the Astros. We get games 3 and 4,
hopefully 6.

The All-Star game is not the place for advantages to be decided.
Baseball should scrap this idea and give the advantage to the team,
not league that earns it.

One last question: if this does count, do we really HAVE to give the
Tigers a representative?
