hi lynn,
scott boras is also jason varitek's agent, and i don't know if you've followed
what has been going on with him, but basically varitek had the chance to go to
arbitration with the red sox and most likely make the same salary he had last
year (about 10 million) for one more year. boras/varitek said no, they wanted to
go to free agency and get a multi year deal. now varitek has been on the decline
and only hit .220 last year. clearly boras overestimated the market for him,
because after a long drawn out drama, varitek ended up coming back and signing
with the red sox - for only 5 million, one year - because there were no other
offers.
now look at what is happening with manny...
i can't say i blame them for turning down LA's latest offer, only because LA
origianlly was willing to give him two years, and now they have gone down to
one. so i can understand that. i think boras has overestimated the market for
manny, and yes, i do think he has a lot of influence on his clients. he is
shady, but until now he has always gotten his clients what they want.
i don't think it is so much what manny (or any athlete) needs. given his history
with the red sox, i think there was a good chance that they were NOT going to
pick up his options and were NOT going to re-sign him, they've pretty much come
out and said so since he was traded. I am not defending his actions and
certainly not defending boras, but that is where this whole mess started - the
red sox didn't want to commit to manny's options, boras told him "get out now
and we'll get you a better contract anyway"... .maybe that will turn out to be
bad advice. regardless of how much money or how many years he gets somehwere
else, i think he and the red sox had pretty much come to the end of their
relationship - and i don't think that is solely one side's fault, either.
i don't wnat to put all the blame on scott boras, but he has quite a history of
shady dealings, i don't know what it is with him, but he definitely has a ALOT
of influence on his clients, and this is not the first time he had advised them
to do things that hurt their image (A-Rod, JD Drew, Varitek, and many others).
It is about money, but remember, more money for manny is more money for boras.
Ok I am babbling, I just get so riled up when talking baseball, boras, manny,
etc... forgive me!

Good Evening Everyone,
Does anyone else think that Scott Boras is the devil? Ever since
Manny fired his old manager and hooked up with this greedy fool it's
been down. I'm really disappointed with the direction that Manny has
taken. Spring training is right around the corner and he still doesn't
have a team. He was worshiped in Los Angeles and did a lot for the
Dodgers. He made millions of dollars with the Red Sox. How much cash
does a person need? I've always had his back in discussions with my
friends. These days all I can say is "he's a future Hall-of-Famer, so
shut up!" I'm trying not to lose the love and respect I always had for
him, but I'm starting to get extremely frustrated.
Talk to me, people. I've love to hear your input and opinions. Help me
understand what the hell is going on.
Take care,
Lynne
