WASHINGTON -- Published reports continue to indicate that the
Nationals have serious interest in free-agent slugger Manny Ramirez.
Not so, according to a baseball source who asked not to be identified.
Ramirez had one of his best seasons in 2008, hitting a combined .332
with 37 home runs and 121 RBIs for the Red Sox and Dodgers, but he
wouldn't be a good fit in Washington for two reasons. For one, the
Nationals are overloaded with right-handed-hitting outfielders, plus
he's 36 years old. The Nationals have often said that they are looking
for players for the long term.
Ramirez's agent is Scott Boras, and the source said the only Boras
client the Nationals had serious interest in was Mark Teixeira, who
agreed to terms on an eight-year, $180 million deal with the Yankees
on Dec. 23.
General manager Jim Bowden and team president Stan Kasten were not
available for comment.
