LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers advanced to the National League
Championship Series for the first time in 20 years with their first
postseason sweep in 45 years, beating the Cubs Saturday night, 3-1, to
win the NL Division Series.
The Dodgers received their third strong start in as many playoff
games, this one from Japanese import Hiroki Kuroda, who blanked the
Cubs for 6 1/3 innings. Kuroda -- technically the first rookie to
clinch a postseason series for the Dodgers since Fernando Valenzuela
in 1981 -- struck out four and pitched out of three jams.
James Loney, whose grand slam keyed the Game 1 win, doubled off Rich
Harden in the first inning to score Russell Martin, who doubled, and
Manny Ramirez, who singled. Another Martin double in the fifth inning
cashed in a Rafael Furcal walk.
Cory Wade pitched out of the jam he inherited from Kuroda in the
seventh but allowed a run in the eighth and was relieved by Jonathan
Broxton, who struck out Mark DeRosa to end the eighth.
Broxton pitched a perfect ninth to nail down the save.
The Dodgers will play the winner of the Philadelphia-Milwaukee
Division Series, beginning Thursday. The Dodgers will host the game if
Milwaukee is the opponent and will open in Philadelphia if the
Phillies win.
