Hey there, my name is Zac Gilhooley. I am involved with the MDI high school crew. Just out of curisoity, when do folks start trying to gets invovled in ultimate. I tried last year around March. It was really quick interest and nothing really worked out. I had very low interest because the other sports were so competitive. I am working on getting into the Gym classes come February.
Happy New Year!

We have the All Pro Sports Center in Waterville reserved from 12:00 (noon) to

Hello there, Scott, and the rest of the Maine Youth ulty crew. It is great that you have space for indoor and times for the interested youth. I have yet to push interest. I am hoping to get into some gym classes by early feb. Just like last season I had a very difficult time getting these kids interested out here on the island. They are so involved with other team sports and extracuricular activities that ultimate is like nothing important. I keep trying different tactics and we will see what happens this year. I work at the school full time but some kids don't even know me.
Anyways, I hope to get some MDI kids interested but I think only an hour at the All Sports arena in Waterville won't be enough for the long drive. I don't think its worth it from my end. I even thought about bringing some kids out to the usual sundays at Orono with the Old guys. But I can't get parent
permisson. I also just don't know how to get these kids out there. I would have to arrange a bus or a van. Something like that and the hopes of them remembering is really slim.
The problem with ultimate right from the start is the commitment. The kids have to see that if you commit to the sport you are likely to get involved just like any other sport and that is what I find the hardest about ulty. It is an indivdual commitment that needs to occur. The kids have to see others trying it out. There is so little High School Ultimate in Maine and the competition is slim.
I will try my best like I said and appreciate all the info from everyone in the ulty crew out here but I can't promise it is ever going to pan out here on the island.
thanks.

What do you expect will be the organization of this indoor time, pick-up or team

I just want to say that we are definitely looking forward to help

The indoor Ultimate will be pick up. The kids will need to bring a
light shirt and dark shirt.
I MUST have all registration forms in hand by Feb 4th in order to make
sure we have enough kids to make this happen, and/or not too many (which
would actually be a wonderful problem, but one I want to know about
before the first Saturday hits).
Please encourage the kids to get me their forms ASAP, or at least to
email me their completed forms. They can bring their $20 on the 11th if
necessary.

Hello All,
My name is Daniel Enking and I am a student at Freeport High School.
We also have an Ultimate team that we started two years ago (we played
Greely twice last year, and would like to do it again this year!). We
are looking for more schools to play against and more tournaments to
attend. I would love to see Ulitmate become a main stream sport in
Maine, so I will do whatever I can to help it along!
Hey there Dan and all ultimate maine youth groups.
My name is Zac Gilhooley, I am the contact for MDI ultimate in the MDI high school. I just recently attended a gym class to get the kids interested. However, sometimes the folks at MDI have many extracurricular activities that are far more important than ulty. It is really hard to change the mindset up here. I am doing my best.
Dan, freeport is rather far for my group (whatever that maybe) to compete but maybe you can come up here one time and work some time to show the kids that you play as a individual on a actual team. That is what I need some actual people besides me trying to convince them that it is out there for high schools in maine.
You know what I mean. Maybe we should have a clinic where the schools come together and we teach (Ummm)

Alright so it is awesome that there are a lot of teams forming all
over maine and that it is getting much easier to contact people from
other teams and affilated with maine ultimate to set up scrimmages and
games and all that stuff. However the impression that i am getting
from emails and messages posted here is that the emphasis is purely on
getting out and scrimmaging another team or amoung your own team,
don't get me wrong thats awesome people are playing. But... there
needs to be an emphasis on learning the game which is not going to
happen from running around throwing a disc in no organized manner at
all. Captains you need to hold practices you need to teach your kids
how to throw the disc, the rules of the game, basic offenses and
defenses and run them over and over again, just showing someone on
paper isnt going to do it you need to practice. If you dont know
enough about ultimate to teach your kids this look for someone in your
area to help you coach the team even if its only once a week or so. It
is going to be especially hard and frustrating to do this having to
deal with the AD, with teachers, with the kids, with organizing, but
it needs to happen if ultimate in maine is going to become anything at
all. As far as i am concerned a bunch of people running around with
absolutly no idea of what they should be doing is not ultimate.
Now dont get me wrong im not saying that everyone needs to be an
allstar and know how to do everything perfectly or even execute what
is supposed to happen correctly, just to know how things should look
in the most basic way. There is no way to improve without knowing
where you are going wrong.
as;
I agree, if teams want to be serious about playing ultimate they should learn the rules of the game and hold pracitces. I know there are some teams who already do this; our team will be having practice every day after school this year, and we have learned offensive and defensive tactics such as the stack offense and cup defense. If teams want to seriously learn how to play, they should find coaches, but i understand that this is often difficult. Just doing whatever you can to get ulimate started is great! And dont stress about it too much...ultimate is suppose to be fun!

Greetings Maine Youth Ultimate Captains and Organizers!
Important developments:
1) The 2nd Annual Maine Youth Ultimate Invitational (scheduled day plus a
raindate) will be some Sunday in May. Mark Robinson is looking into getting
Greely fields. Rich Young and Alex Pozzy are looking into getting Cumberland
County fairgrounds
as a alternative site. Mark and Rich will be updating folks soon regarding the
date and location based on field availability.
2) The Maine Youth Ultimate Invitational is now UPA sponsored which means all
participants will need to be UPA juniors members at $20 per person. Benefits to
the sponsorship is that the UPA will be providing trophies for the tourney and
SOTG
winners plus State Championship discs are available for $4/disc. Please order
discs if interested from the UPA.
3) PLEASE START EARLY ON YOUR TEAM'S PAPERWORK!!! Paperwork is due TWO WEEKS
before the 2nd Annual Maine Youth Ultimate Invitational. Your team will need to
fill out an Online roster via the UPA website (In order to do this, it helps if
the person
filling this out is a UPA member.. for help, see..
http://www2.upa.org/roster/help). Also, each player needs to fill out the 2
following forms and this needs to be mailed into the UPA. Updated rosters and
forms for added players can be turned in
the day of the Invitational. Again, you can access these 2 forms that each
person on your team has to fill out at:
a) Individual Waiver (http://www2.upa.org/files/Waiver_0.pdf)
b) Medical Authorization Form
(http://www2.upa.org/files/Chaperone_Form(2006).pdf)
Also, your team's chaparone will need to fill out the following form...
c) Chaparone Form... only filled out by coach/mentor/chaparon..
4) Attached is an updated contact list for Spring 2006 for Maine Youth Ultimate
teams in Word... please use to organize scrimmages, tourneys, etc..
5) Applications are up for the 2006 UPA HS Eastern and Western
Championships, as well as for the 2006 UPA Youth Club Championships.
Check out the announcement on the UPA home page ([ http://www.upa.org
]www.upa.org) to get
all the info you need on these great youth Ultimate events.
6) This is just a reminder that the early application period for the 2006 UPA
Youth Club Championship ends on February 28th. This application period is for
UPA sanctioned leagues only. For more information please check out
http://www.upa.org/home/youth_apps.
Thanks!

ALSO, THERE WILL BE AN ENTRY FEE DUE PRIOR TO THE STATE INVITATIONAL (MORE INFO.

ARSENAULT GOT CAMDEN HILLS LAST YEAR) AT NO COST, THE TOURNEY ENTRY FEE WILL
PROBABLY BE
AROUND $50 PER TEAM ASSUMING 8-10 TEAMS. IF WE HAVE TO USE CUMBERLAND
FAIRGROUNDS, THEN ENTRY FEE WILL PROBABLY BE $100-150 PER TEAM ASSUMING 8-10
TEAMS. FOR THE TOURNEY, WE NEED 4 ULTIMATE FIELDS (EACH FIELD ABOUT 120 X 40
YARDS). IF YOUR SCHOOL
CAN HOST THIS EVENT IN SOUTHERN MAINE THIS YEAR, PLEASE LET THE GROUP KNOW!

Zac here from the MDI area. If I get a team set (which is highly unlikely) I would recommend the May 7th date. Especially if it takes me so long to get a team going. I usually don't get any interest at all out here. It is really a pull!
I'll let you know.

Dear John-
April 30th and May 7th are good dates for a tournament. Also, I just
talked with oe Auciello this morning and he mentioned that your team is
playing at the high school on Mondays. Tuesdays and thursdays- can we
get in on some games?
We've got about 10 people interested and they would love the
opportunity to play more.
Hope you are well.
Thanks.

Hello,
You and your team are formally invited to the First Annual Camden Hills
Invitational Tournament. Based on the responses of a survey the best
dates overall seem to be Sunday April 30 with a raindate of May 7. This
date allows for two weeks before the state tournament which is May 14.
We plan to start registration at 9 with play beginning at 9:30 am.
In order to participate in this event, everyone on your roster will need
to be a UPA member. (Which is great because it ensures you are set up
for the state tournament.) Please have a medical Authorization Form and
aUPA Junior's Chaperone Form filled out as necessary.
Please RSVP as soon as possible so that we can have time to figure a
schedule as well as volunteer and field needs.
More information will be forthcoming as I hear from teams.
If there is anyone who has not received this email that should please give
me a heads up and I will forward a copy along.

Maine Youth Ultimate Folks
If anyone is interested, the UPA has made state tourney discs (with all
sponsored states) for 2006... design choices are attached. If there is enough
interest, we can place an order... however if this is the case we need someone
(with enough $) to
volunteer to do this. Another option may be for interested teams to order their
own... however, UPA may not like gazoodles of orders like that.. anyway,
holler if you are interested...

Hey Hash,
Sounds like things are picking up steam for the
ultimate tournament.
My middle schoolers lead busy lives, and our limited
springs sports program at school occupies them with
baseball and spring track. They like ultimate at
recess, but don't seem enthusiastic about forming a
real team just yet.
That being said, could you take my name off the yahoo!
list serve? The masses of emails are getting to be
overwhelming.
I hope you are well, throwing lots of disc, and
getting ready for the spring to come warm this cold
land of ours.
best, and
thanks,
IAN
